Saints "Leaking Money" Article

Does anyone know the TV money situation while we're not playing? Or what happens if we don't resume the season? I'd assume we face repaying some of what we've had (Man Utd have said that they have to) and we won't get more. With a wage bill of £10m + pcm it's pretty clear that we'd need to balance the books somehow if the revenue stream dries up.

The major part of her inheritance was the MALI (MArkus LIebherr) group of engineering companies, which manufactured heavy equipment and vehicles, such as tractors, and was worth billions at the time her father died. I've just been looking in to what's happened to them since then.

Cheers. Despite that, I can understand why she'd want to cash in on the club. It was Markus baby and you'd have to be very committed, and willing to throw in cash, to keep it. It's kind of like being gifted a bigger version of a huge country estate that you would never want to live in, and that needs huge amounts of money every year to run , staff and maintain for the pleasure of seasonal visitors. Others have their own view, but I can understand why she sold.

All of it. It is utter bull****.

To start with the lack of fans at games doesn't leave the club with a £100m hole in their budget, especially if the season resumes and TV money continues. Even if it did, that would not require the best players like Ings, Ward-Prowse & Remond to be sold like the article claims, you'd sell other players long before they needed to go.

Easier said then done, you can only sell players other clubs want to buy as Saints have found out the last couple of years with the amount of players out on loan.

The amounts may or not be wrong but Saints, along with a lot of other clubs, will be down on income.

With the lack of season ticket money that they would have received in by now and refunds they will have to give out plus the loss of ticket money from the last 4 home games it will add up to quite a lot.

We dont know when fans will be allowed back into grounds or when next seaosn will even start so I can see a few clubs wanting to sell players to help balance the books.

No MALI manufactured engine parts and pumps and stuff. They did not manufacture cranes, fridges or heavy plant equipment and it wasn't worth billions. Cortese ran it from his desk at St Mary's for about 2 years.

Who said anything about cranes and fridges apart from you??? Why on earth would you make up such cr@p? Weird.

It's easy enough to find out what they manufactured before they were liquidated:

"tractors" "specialist vehicles"

But their main line was common rail injection systems.

Worth billions? Really?

She just wound it up, like a local tennis club. If it was a multi-billion company in good health there would have been trade buyers or institutional investors. Someone would have taken it on. But no, it just quietly vanished without a trace

It looked pretty small time and there was barely a mention of it on the internet. Have you ever seen a Mali vehicle anywhere? Had you ever heard of it ever, anywhere?

I've seen plenty of Liebherr vehicles around the world but the only time I've ever heard of Mali was when Markus died.

I reckon it was essentially a hobby business, worth not a lot, which let him pootle around with some offshoot ideas relevant to the main family business. The equivalent of a retiree pottering about in his shed but with deep pockets He obviously had a good few millions knocking around in cash but I don't buy that he had billions. If he had billions then Kat inherited billions and wouldn't have been so keen to sell SFC to some nobodies.

How does an article in the Daily Star like this help players get sold?

How does such an article benefit brokers?

Why rule out the reason being a trashy paper wanting a click bait article?

They'd get more click bait out of "player from top 6 club eats sandwich" than a story about a boring lower mid table Premier League club having to possibly sell a few slightly above average players.

In fairness, that's a lovely tractor.

I may stand corrected (said the man in the orthopaedic shoes).

Fair enough, Benji. Markus did seem to manufacture high quality equipment and vehicles. He was actually in the process of expanding the tractor manufacturing plant when he died.

Don’t they make fridges too? I’m sure when I was looking for a new fridge there were some liebherr ones in currys.

Different company, Turkish. They are manufactured by the Liebherr Group, which is owned by Markus's siblings & Kat's cousins,. That is still manufacturing and thriving. At the time of his death, Markus only owned the 5 companies in the MALI Group + SFC. They were all liquidated after Kat gained control of them, except SFC.

The fallout and legal battles in Germany over those former MALI companies are ongoing.

Looks like only a handful of those tractors were built as prototypes.

It's too much of a coincidence that the $3bn fortune attributed to ML was exactly what he'd have been worth if he'd kept his equal share in the Liebherr group of companies. As it was, MALI always looked comparatively small time, with nothing to suggest multi-billion dollar valuations. Which would explain why KL was so eager to sell the club - by the time ML's estate had passed through probate, a thriving premier league club was almost certainly the most valuable part of her inheritance by far.

Yes, that pretty much sums up my suspicions.

They used different brand names as Markus bought the Doppstadt Tractor factory, then marketed his new tractors under the brand name Li-Trac.

I could look at videos of MALI tractors all day but I've got better things to do:

Why aren't the tyres rotating?

Sounds about right. Throw money at a football club in another country, or sell it and kick back. No brainer for her.

I was always of the belief that Lienherr was nowhere near the billionaire some of the paper made out. In fact I would say that the majority of her wealth today came from the sale of SFC.

Well I looked into some of it the other day. Mali Common Rail was still in business up to about 2017 and had a nominal stock value of about a million suisse francs and a turnover of about 2 million of the same, about 40 employees, KL one and only director. The tractor division was insolvent as far back as 2012 and only had 15 employees at the time. Was taken over apperently by another tractor firm, FUB or FUSS...something like that.
