Defectors Watch

He is a very good player, playing in the biggest team in that league, in a lower quality of league so not the greatest of surprises tbf.
Ajax play with a style we could only dream of, none of managers would play ziyech and tadic in the same team here cos they are "luxury" players.

I say give Bosz a chance as he had Tel Aviv and Ajax playing proper football and Cruyff recruited him specifically for Ajax.

Anyway ajax team could look mustard next year, they already have Blind back and Alderweied is rumoured to be keen to return.

From BBC...

A word of praise, too, for keeper Gazzaniga, given the vote over Michel Vorm in Lloris's absence. He produced crucial saves when needed and certainly played his part in keeping Spurs in the hunt for a place in the last 16 of the Champions League.

All of our goalkeepers would look better if they could escape the coaching of Dave Watson. As England coach, he wrecked Joe Hart's career and at Saints he has done the same for Fraser Forster and now he seems to have got to work on Alex McCarthy.

It that the McCarthy that’s gone from Crystal Palace reserves to the England squad since working under Watson, or another one?

McCarthy was in the England squad before he even went to Palace. He was a good keeper when he was at Palace as well, he hasn't improved while at Saints to any degree just been around to replace the hopeless Forster. Watson is a liability, unable to improve keepers who don't have natural ability.

When Watson came in from Norwich I remember their thoughts, they believed he'd also had a reverse effect on the fortunes of John Ruddy as well. I thought he was a decent pull for us at the time, but seemingly has got a bit of a knack of making keepers regress.

Seems like Saints have an unhappy knack of keeping mediocre performers too long. Watson, Kelvin, Les Reed, Ralph, Wilson, Long, Austin, Ward-Prowse, Pellegrino. It's a long list.

Martin Caceres looking good again for Uruguay against Brazil at the Emirates. Shame he was never really given a go.

Another les clusterf**k

The only thing wrong with the Caceres deal was the Fonte clusterf**k that preceded it. He was experienced back up, whilst we gave Stephens game time under relatively little pressure. Nothing wrong with that.

Fonte is having a great season for Lille and Portugal. He played the full 90 minutes to gain his 36th cap for Portugal in their 0-0 draw with Italy and his Lille team are 2nd in the French league. How we could do with him this season.

Pied plays for Lille too. He hasn't played for them yet though.

Pied is the same at Lille as he was here: an average squad player. Fonte is the same as he ever was, an incredibly underrated player who leads defences and teams to great things, like 6th place for Saints, the European Championship title and Nations League finals for Portugal and a Champions League place for Lille. You'd probably have to go back to Alan Ball to find a Saints player like that.

The Nations League finals in June will certainly have ex-Saints connections, with Fonte's Portugal and van Dijk's Netherlands team lining up against England.

We once had arguably the best club central defensive pairing in the world. We couldn't have kept van Dijk because he was young and very much in demand but we could have kept Fonte. It was Les Reed's mistake to sell him, with the usual barrage of negative PR to turn the fans against him. Fortunately we have got rid of Reed so hopefully we won't make similar mistakes in the future.

No. Fonte asked to leave. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/38523114

Even if you believe Fonte that no new deal was offered, the club had every right not to offer a 33yo only halfway into his current contract a new deal. He would've been 35 at the end of his contract.

Fonte was slowing down at Saints , his late challenges got later . He hit the heights with his international career but when he came back things got worse and he left for WHU where his decline continued . He is now in a league that may suit him and I hope he enjoys the end of his career , which was not going to happen in the Prem .

Whilst I don't like VVD, his reaction with the referee last night was quality. Pity he didn't show the same behaviours when Klippety wanted a weekend away in Blackpool.

Re: Fonte, he was slowing up physically as evidence by the shockers for WHU (one of them at SMS, when a Pellegrino team scores 3, you know you've had a stinker) although the leadership was still there. I got the impression he and Puel didn't see eye to eye and possibly Reed as well after the strikers/transfer window debacle in 2016. The fact he wasn't adequetly replaced despite the money seemingly being there was the next sign of Les slowing up as well and Reed should have been phased out that summer if the 'takeover' wasn't in the background.

Tadic was inconsistent but been in great form for Ajax in Europe. Quite frankly, the table this machine sits on is more creative and contributes more than Moi, who has to be one of the most pointless signings I've ever seen, and that's going some on recent years.

Even with VVD, we've replaced him with Hoedt, who is getting marginally better but hardly good sufficient still, and Vestergaard, whose is a lanky presence on the bench at £18m. We talk about Fonte slowing up, but he could play for Saints in the masters tournaments in his 50s and still outpace Jannik.

Let's not even mention Carrillo. With the above ineptitude, Reed, his carer and rent-a-gob might as well have done a KLF and burned £85m on a Scottish island.

Let's not moan, we've probably got one or two more good performances to come this season from Lemina. Now he's got speed, unfortunately it's only when there's a 30 or 40mph limit.

The clue is the bit in bold. Fonte was past his best when he left us and I have no problem with us actually selling him, provided we had a decent replacement signed up... which we didn't.

Gazzaniga got his 1st cap for Argentina. Quite a rise for him since leaving us.

Just after joining us didn't Pochettino **** himself laughing in a press conference when a journo suggested Nigel Adkins had claimed that Gazzanigga could go on to play for Argentina? Funny how things work out.

if he didn’t rate him why did he sign him for Spurs?
