Relegation - The Run In...

Huddersfield are now in big trouble. Their run in is horrible. Stoke's isn't much better. Makes the West Ham game massive. Three points there and we are level with Huddersfield. Lose and we are going to struggle to get the points. Think that 36 points might actually be enough

West Ham’s aren’t exactly a barrel of east end cockney laughs either. If we beat them they are in deep doggy doo.

Fixtures for the bottom few. Assuming WBA are doomed and Newcastle and above can get the 35/36/37/38 points required for safety.

Not sure when we will play Swansea, so have shoe-horned it in prior to the last game.

Not sure they look down tbf with Newcastle, Brighton, and Watford in their next 3 and Everton at home to come as well. 6 or 7 points out of those games would not be a massive surprise and might keep them up.

Can't beat Swansea and Palace home, then unlikely to get much away at Newc or BHA.

Shame, started well and seem to have a decent manager, hopefully we can limp above them.

Yes, but it's not like they've got 8 horrendously difficult fixtures against unbeatable teams. Like you say, hopefully we will limp above them.

Looking pretty bad for Saints. Simply have to beat West Ham next week. Then get wins against Swansea & Bournemeouth.

Then anything from tough ties against Chelsea, Leicester, Everton, Arsenal, Man City is bonus points.

Why are they bonus points? Why can't we try to get them?

Yep, with the schedule as it is, the WH is a critical fixture. Can either help us out of the relegation zone or deepen the anxiety.

Sure we can try and get them. However they are the much harder games. Arsenal home record is extremely impressive. Man City have lost in the league once this season. I'd love to be confident of beating Chelsea at home but over the last few seasons we haven't beaten a top 5 side & they are going to be pretty desperate to catch Spurs in 4th. Both Everton and Leicester are tough away games i'd normally take a draw from.

If we don't maximise our points in the 3 very winnable games we are going to require much more bonus points from the tougher ones.

We need to beat West Ham and Swansea. I hate the term ‘six-pointer’ but winning these two would certainly help us to overhaul them.

  • 2 weeks later...

Always knew it was a bad decision to swap the fixtures. We should have rearranged the away game to a midweek earlier in the season and kept the home game where it was.

GD has taken a hit as well.

It's gotta be between us, Stoke and Huddesfield.

Getting 40 pts seems a big ask as well - gotta hope it's gonna be 37/38pts + better GD.

After today’s capitulation it’s straw clutching time.

Maybe Arsenal will have their eyes on their Europa tie.

Maybe one of the other big teams has an off day or with City guaranteed the title they have their minds on the beach.

Maybe our blind squirrel will find a nut.

Fat chance!

I reckon Man City could field their women's team last day of the season and beat us on the basis of our recent performances!!!!!!!!!

Beat Bournemouth and draw with Everton and Swansea, gives us 33 points. That might be enough based on the fact that Huddersfield and Stoke don't look likely to better that. I know I'm clutching at straws but it's not over yet. Also, based on our current form, getting those 5 points looks a big ask.

We basically have to beat Leicester and Swansea away and Bournemouth at home to have any chance. You can forget Arsenal, Chelsea and City, and we never get anything at Everton. So absolute best case scenario is another 9 points leaving us on 37. That would involve us winning 3 in 7 after previously winning 1 in 19.

We're absolutely ****ed.

Performance gives us a bit more hope, we are capable of getting results if we put that effort in. Beat Bournemouth, beat Swansea, get 2/3 other points and we have a chance.

Chelsea are beatable thats for sure if you get at them.

If we get at Chelsea they will exploit the space and get at us to the tune of four or five goals because individually all of our centre backs are ****e.

"Just need 3 wins".

After the last PL win against WBA, we faced 12 more PL games and it was commonly agreed that we just needed 3 more PL wins to be safe. Winning 25% of the remaining games was a realistic expectation. Now, 6 games later and after no PL wins we are faced with the same target of 3 more wins, but we now need to win 50% of the remaining games. As a target, 50% wins is frankly unrealistic and we need a miracle.

Get out the prayer mats.

I think 35 points may be enough to stay up, looking at Stoke and Huddersfield's fixtures.

I wouldn't say Swansea are safe, although I expect Palace and West Ham to be fine. Swansea have Everton at home next but after that Man City and Chelsea so a slip-up against Everton could leave them on 32 points going into their last 3 games. Those are against Bmouth, us and then Stoke so those last two matches could be pretty crunch games (or us and Stoke could be down by then).

I still believe we can escape this.

Point at home to Chelsea, 3 points against Bournemouth and a point each from Swansea and Man City.

Huddersfield to get nothing from their remaining five fixtures (Watford, Everton, Chelsea, Man City, Arsenal). We stay up....

Huddersfield will beat either Watford or Everton at home, possibly both which means we need 10 points from 6 games as long as Stoke don’t better what we do.

therefore 3 wins against Bournemouth, Leicester, Everton and Swansea plus a draw in the other one would do it.

If we beat Chelsea it gets a bit easier but I’m not holding my breath.....

It’s a hell of an ask for a team who have only won 5 out of 32 league games

I don't see much reason to predict Huddersfield winning both of those. They might, but they could just as easily lose both.

Two fold. One is that Watford and Everton have nothing to play for.

Secondly both have been bloody awful away from home. Watford haven’t won away since early November and Everton have only won at Stoke since mid December.

As I read it, Hudds only need to win one more game and it will be bloody difficult to get near them again.

Chances of them winning one of Watford or Everton at home are fairly decent I would suggest.

If we lose to Chelsea then we could be 10 pts from Hudds by the start of our next league game.

*Just happened*

The vibrations from my washing machine caused my Saints pint glass to wobble off the draining board and - despite falling a distance of 3ft onto my hard tiled kitchen floor - it DID NOT SMASH.

I have taken this to be a sign that we will survive.

If they get three more points they will be on 35. We need to be aiming for at least 35. 2 wins and a draw. If we don't get that then, yeah, we're probably screwed.

If they win two games we probably won't catch them and the next best bet is probably catching Swansea, who we have the opportunity to beat (yeah, I know.....!)

Saints: Chelsea (H), Leicester (A), Bournemouth (H), Everton(A), Swansea(A), Man City (A)

Swansea: Everton (H), Man City (A), Chelsea (H), B'Mouth (A), No Match, Stoke (H)

CP: BHA (H), Watford (A), Leicester (H), Stoke (A), No Match, WBA (H)

Hudd: Watford (H), No match, Everton (H), Man City (A), Chelsea (A), Ars (H)

Sooo if we assume nothing against Chelsea, and we ASSUME 7 pts over the next 4 matches, we'd be at 35.

If Hudd only beats either Watford or Everton for 3 more pts, we'd be tied but have a much better GD so we'd win

If CP beat Stoke and WBA they'd have 37 and be clear of us

If Swansea beats Stoke they'd have 35 pts and it would come down to GD (we are both tied)

I think our best path is to hope Stoke continues losing and Huddersfield loses to Watford. In theory, especially if they lose to Watford, Huddersfield could lose out. That would mean that we'd just need 1 win and 1 draw to pass them because they're GD sucks. In any scenario we have to win more matches to be safe than anyone else, and we have two really tough matches in Man City and Chelsea.
