The counter argument to this is that towns like Fleetwood and Accrington are right shitholes and that no right minded person would want to live there. Portsmouth on the other hand is .... Using cheaper flat & house prices is daft. The average League One player earns £70,000 per year. They are rich men and can easily afford a decent flat or house. I did a really quick google and found a 2 bed flat in Portsmouth for £650 pcm. I found a 2 bed flat in Fleetwood for £550 pcm. I know maths down there isn't a strong point but that is not double! I think he's got a valid point about the cost of living for some places - I imagine the bigger cities up North have at least comparable accomodation costs to Portsmouth though - but I expect this is far more of an issue for the London based clubs... To be fair, 100k via one earner to raise a family in London doesn't go far. Fine for a young lad with no commitments but not great for a family man with a wife at home and a couple of kids. I wouldn't live in London for £100k.

Lots of families are fine on an income of under £100k in London. A family of two new teachers would be on a combined £60k. Plus they don't even need to live in London. A lot of London team training grounds are on the fringes of London. That is their main workplace, not a stadium they visit 25 times a year. View From The Top Posted 23 July, 2020 Share Posted 23 July, 2020 The issue a lot of lower league clubs have is that the more experienced pros have kids settled in schools etc so want the security of a 3 year contract but the clubs are loathe to offer them. I believe the average lower league contract is for 2 years, with a release after 1 year clause built in. It's understandable why some pros won't upsticks. It'll be even more profound this year as clubs, even the skates, tighten their belts further. For example, Port Vale have released all of their academy lads who would have finished Y13 this year. They cannot afford to offer any contracts. They've let coaches go too. Crewe have done something similar as have Walsall too I believe.

Matthew Le God Posted 7 August, 2020 Share Posted 7 August, 2020 (edited) Key thread news alert! League One and Two have today voted in favour of a wage cap. It screws Pompey as they are restricted to £2.5m per year (for wages, agent fees, signing on fees combined!). It now means they can't outspend clubs with smaller crowds and have to drop from their current wage bill quite a lot! Edited 7 August, 2020 by Matthew Le God
LGTL Posted 7 August, 2020 Share Posted 7 August, 2020 Reports suggest they have to half their current wage bill 😂 It’s just become even harder for them to get out of L1, but that’s ok right because they love it down there.
Saint_clark Posted 7 August, 2020 Share Posted 7 August, 2020 Wasn't their wage bill £4million? With 8 squad players out of contract? In other words, their first team is gutted with no spare cash to replace them? They'll be a good bet to go down again this season.
