Didn't see huge amounts from him, but difficult to judge in such a pathetic league.  Like I said, I really hope he can come back and smash it up and get 20 goals from midfield, but it seems unlikely. I'm not sure he can change his core attributes that much from playing in the equivalent of League 1.

I'd take 5.. beats Djenepo, Redmond, Tella, Walcott, Minamino - ties with Armstrong.

Classic case of us not selling whilst we have the opportunity.

Same as Forster last year, his stock was high and if we really had wanted to sell him which made perfect business sense, we could have said you have no future here and be done with it.

Elyounoussi comes back with 17 goals last year, with 2 years left on contract.

Just flog him off ffs.

He ll probably end up having a crap season with us as he doesn t have the level and we ll end up giving him out on a freebie next summer.

I know we are struggling for cash but we are not exactly making the right financial decisions to get out of this mess.

Have you not noticed the outgoing business we’ve done this off season? Totally goes against your final paragraph, it is exactly what we’ve been doing to raise cash.

It isn’t as easy as flicking on the PS4 and listing ‘em.

Our starting CAMs next year should be Armstrong and Tella. Then you have Redmond, Walcott, Djenpo, and maybe Mo (not seen enough of him) as back up. Also Perraud can play left wing extremely capably if needed. Strikers will be ings and/or Armstrong, Adams, and Obafemi. Its a decent enough team for a mid table finish and will again come down to injuries and squad depth - but at least this year the covid rules on recovery facilities etc should be relaxed!

The reality is that we're very much in transition even now - we're still trying to balance the books and off load Les' long contract squad players, whilst building a new team and remaining stable. its by no means easy task given our financial state.

I really don't think Tella is very good at CAM. He was decent enough as a striker but I can't personally remember one game where he really excelled as a CAM. Our CAM's should be Armstrong and someone new or we will really struggle imo.

Fair enough, time will tell i guess. I really rate Tella as an attacking player and think he was one of our best outlets towards the end of last season. He also seems like a pretty level headed young player. I'll be happy enough provided we get to see what he can do with more and more game time. Always find him to be exciting to watch and dangerous for the opposition.

Shines in the SPL, and shines against League 2 opposition.

There’s a connection there…

Well played tonight none the less, but answer to a problem this guy isn’t.

No-one has ever claimed he's going to be a star player. But a better option off the bench than we had last season, definitely.

That's a bit harsh on a day he scores three. I'd rather have him as an option compared to some of the dross we've had recently. He's worth a go at least.

Did he shine more or less than Armstrong for Celtic? Genuine question as I don't know  but the point is S Armstrong is now a key player for us despite a slow start in out team. It is possible that Moi needed the time away to develop into a player capable of being useful for us.

I'm hoping that's the case.

Yeah maybe - perhaps I’ve done the guy a massive disservice based on what we saw of him when he played for us previously, and he was a complete fish out of water.

He shone at Celtic, and the fans were disappointed to see him go - it’s hard to compare his Celtic spell with that of Armstrong as Stu was part of a side steam rolling everyone where as Moi was part of a team very much in transition.

I don’t want the guy to fail - I just don’t want the club to be complacent and assume because he had an ok spell out on loan that we don’t need to recruit back up.

We’ve already lots of backup in that position.

Hard to judge as Armstrong often played center mid for Celtic and Elyounoussi played a much more attacking role. Goals and assists-wise Elyounoussi (10+4) got more last season than Stu did in his last season with Celtic (3+5) but less than Stu did the season before that(15+7).

The games he’s played well in outside the Prem are probably just showing his level. But still show there is something about him. We’ve had worse than him on the bench and he can definitely fill a spot there this season before he most likely moves on.

How many did Tella score last night?

He looked class yesterday - but like Redmond my fear is he just doesn’t have the qualities to be consistent in the Prem. You can add Djenepo and Walcott to that list though - 4 good sub options but none of them suggest they can consistently deliver in the Prem.

How to compare him with Redmond or Tella in terms of their performance tonight?

I didn't see the whole game but Redmond was called out by Quest TV for his contribution particularly in the 1st half when he had a hand in all the goals (and scored in the 2nd half).

I remain unconvinced by Moi - it isn't any coincidence that the likes of Redmond & Moi look better against 2nd rate opposition.

I certainly wouldn't start either against Newcastle although would like to see us fit in KWP (and Tino) into the team.

If redmond was consistently as good as he is in flashes he would be a top 4 player he isn’t hence he plays for us!

I’m glad to see him have great performance even against low class opposition. It will build his confidence in himself and his manager and could easily lead to better performances at a higher level.

how often do we see players become much better players once their confidence starts to improve of go down hill rapidly with a couple of early poor performances.

Fair play, played well, but difficult to judge against such poor opposition.  Everyone had so much space last night, but will be interesting to see how he gets on in the premier league.  Up to him to prove he can do it.

To be fair to the guy he can't really do much more, he goes out on loan and does very well, he comes back and gets a chance (albeit against lower opposition) and does very well. If he is also training well then he deserves a chance imo.

Whether he will be good enough we don't really know, but the guy has actually only had 8 PL starts and less than 800minutes of PL football, in a team that was very poor at the time, who's manager then got sacked, whilst he was in his first season in a new league after moving from a different country.

Also as that Lille performance (two great goals btw) and iirc he was man of match against Man City in the CL, shows he has played well against good opposition. The guy probably has more Champions League and Europa League appearances than our whole squad put together.

I always thought he’d kick on under Ralph and would suit a role a bit narrower in our 4222. Not blessed with pace, but neither were Lallana and Tadic. Does Moi have the technical ability of those 2? I guess time will Tell.

Clearly has something about him, but is he good enough / suited to the premier league is a different question.

Personally, I think he deserves a go. He can’t be any less effective than Theo is.

No better time to give him a go than off the back of a hat trick, all be it against pretty poor opposition. He’ll be full of confidence. A big weekend ahead for him I think.

Never been a fan at all of moi in the past but I think after a hat trick and two assists he probably deserves to start our next prem game now.. performances like that need to be rewarded..

bit of a conundrum for the next game now.. I do really want Livramento in front of kwp .. but Stu Armstrong needs to be in as well

Why? It was vs the reserves of a 4th tier team. It shouldn't mean he jumps the pecking order for PL games.

It wasn't their reserves, it was the Newport first team but they'd rotated in some reserve players.

In the PL he looks out of his depth. Be nice if he proves me wrong, but I struggle to see anything he excels at when playing at PL level.

He never made it under Hughes but then so did half our players. Ralph is a class above (maybe three or four classes above to be frank) Hughes for player improvement so I'm hopeful. Looked good pre saints against some top teams and at Celtic against some top teams. Might be something in it.

For me theo hasn’t done enough to cement his place.. and the only number ten who is really head and shoulders above is stuey.

why not give moi a shot after a performance like that? Games like this should help play you into the team hat trick and two assists is impressive against who ever and we had A decent young line up out and he stole the show..

would be a bit soul destroying if you don’t get a start after putting up stats like that. He deserves a shot for me

I'd rather see Livramento in midfield and Walker-Peters back at right back.

Well said! Some pragmatism there. If people would erase their early opinions on him and just keep an open mind on his ability,  his stats on loan and his return are good enough to be excited about. Is this not what we wanted? A player many, very many have written off as not good enough, goes out on loan, does well, gets valuable experience CL/EL, and come back and is performing well in training. Ralf tells you he is doing well, and then he show it against weaker opposition, yet we still want to stick to the old mantra..........

By the stats of that game, he was the best of our bunch! Give the guy a break, he is a  SAINTS player, one of ours! He is trying his best, so let's give him some fuxking support!

Considering Armstrong is injured and Walcott has been poor, and Redmond is well Redmond, I'd put him in line to start.

He looked good technically in pre-season, although he will never be able to mask his chronic lack of pace. There is a creative player in him, can he be worked into the Ralph system in the Premier League?

Pace isn't the be all and end all. He's no slower than Tadic and Lallana who have both done well for us in a creative role. We have some absolutely rapid players like Armstrong, Tella, other Armstrong, Djenepo, Perraud we can handle one slower player pulling the strings from the 10 role.

No I wouldn't. Performing at league level is what is relevant.

He's scored 16 goals in european competition and six goals at international level.  I'd say that's probably relevant.  Personally when I did see him against Derby I thought he was hopeless - no pace and no skills to beat anyone with either but he obviously has something about him and the goals against Lille were excellent.  If Ralph thinks he deserves a shot then it's hard to argue against it.

This is the thing, people talk as if there's some high bar to reach or compare him to decent prem players. It's irrelevant, he just has to be more useful than Walcott/Redmond/Djenepo.

He's a more intelligent player than all three and can pick out a pass better. It's only Armstrong I trust in that role really but Moi could add something. He's not had any runs in the team under Ralph so why not. People can question opposition but you can only do it against what's in front of you. He has a 1 in 3 goal record across 300+ games. That's pretty impressive even if in Switzerland and Scotland. I feel like Redmond and Djenepo would be erratic wherever they played.

We should reward a performance like that. He was the best player out there in a position we're lacking. We constantly reward mediocrity and it's sent us into decline. Theo should be an impact player now, he does ok as a sub late on.

It'd be nice if he proves you wrong, but he can't do that if he's only going to get a 10 minute sub appearance every 3 or 4 games.

The only place up for grabs would seem to be Walcott's, and as Redmond only seems to be able to play off the left, S Armstrong injured, it's either Moi, Tella or rejig the backline with KWP and move Livramento forward.

Any of those three changes would be interesting to watch and leave good options if it doesn't work out. The main thing is just DROP THEO.
