tajjuk Posted 10 November, 2020 Share Posted 10 November, 2020 He's had a very good what last 3 months if you include re-start but that seems a bit much. I mean in January we couldn't get him out the door quick enough, fair play to him though much improved. Again though a bit like Stephens, you have to wonder whether this a purple patch of form and he'll return to more his old error prone self, or whether this a good defender who is finally showing his true ability after a poor first two seasons? 1
Jeremy Corbyn Posted 10 November, 2020 Share Posted 10 November, 2020 He's a very good defender and footballer other than his lack of pace/agility. If that's not exposed (or he doesn't expose it himself) he's always looked decent. Maybe he's adjusted and learn how to avoid getting caught out so much.

Saint Keef Posted 11 November, 2020 Share Posted 11 November, 2020 Joe Gomez injured on the England camp now. Could be a serious knee injury apparently. Gone back to Dipperland for scans . Southgate not sounding positive. I don't know where Jannik is with his contract at the moment, but methinks, based on his performances so far this season, maybe we need to secure him with a new contract or extension.......and I never thought I'd say that about the lad based on previous seasons. The transition has been remarkable.

The transition has been remarkable. I think the main question needs to be... Why the flying fuck is anyone playing international 'friendlies'? Why? These players hardly had any pre-season, the whole world is in restrictions of sort, yet Fifa and Uefa for some reason still feel International friendlies are important. In what world do they live in? It makes a mockery of all the restrictions and all the work the clubs are doing with these 'secure' bubbles, if these lads can just get on a plane and go to Timbuktu. Then on top of that they risk injury and 2 weeks isolation. Seriously, wtf is wrong with football. Edited 11 November, 2020 by S-Clarke

Saint Keef Posted 12 November, 2020 Share Posted 12 November, 2020 It's a horrible thought, but imagine an international footballer (possibly a high-profile player) dies from Covid 19 having been on international duty (whether it be for a meaningless friendly or some tin-pot competition), the outcry that would cause would be immense. The footballing authorities wouldn't have a leg to stand on. It would probably see the end to all internationals for some considerable time and may even halt domestic football for a long time. These internationals (as SW5 Saint says above) are reckless and unnecessary. Some would say dangerous.

My guess is as they were drawing they decided to throw the kitchen sink at it so took off a centreback to put an attacking player on. It worked, they won in the 93rd minute and still have a chance to qualify for the finals now.

Off subject but Liverpool played Phillips as no option at the time, he has been in their reserves/youth for a long time. Lord Duckhunter Posted 13 December, 2020 Share Posted 13 December, 2020 One of the biggest turn round I’ve seen in 45 years of watching. Never in a million years did I think he’d make it here. Couldn’t head the bloody thing despite being so tall and moved like a statue. Commanding now, and has got a lovely ping. Still a doubt about his lack of pace, but his positional play is covering it up well. Long May it continue.

woodsaint1 Posted 13 December, 2020 Share Posted 13 December, 2020 Always thought Vestergaard could become a decent player for us (certainly in the minority on here), but his performances the last few months have even exceeded those expectations. Saint Keef Posted 14 December, 2020 Share Posted 14 December, 2020 Another Liverpool defender injury yesterday - Matip. They will definitely need to go shopping in January - we need to slap a £70m price tag on Jannik now. I'm not saying he's itching to go, but if Liverpool came calling, the prospect of playing alongside VvD (obviously not this season, but in the long term) might be very tempting for him. Just saying.....

They've gone backwards from where they were, ie they have regressed as players rather than progressed. Whether they were first team players is irrelevant to the question of whether they've improved under Ralph, which they haven't. Slattery has (had) loads of potential but can't make a 9 man bench. Vokins hasn't kicked on. Ditto Valery.

But if the players ahead of them are doing extremely well (as they clearly are) then they aren't going to make the starting line-up, subs bench. That does not mean they have regressed, the quality bar for gametime is very high atm.
