I'm pretty positive about this one to be honest, looks like we have actually got him!

He's got a VVD swagger about him, and the normal cliché 'he's young and hungry to improve'.

This would be a good start to our business, adding pace and power at CB, attributes we currently lack back there and haven't had since VVD left.

If he does well then probably 2 years. Not a problem if sold for a big fee and then replaced well.

I was hoping at least 3. At least he's been honest about using us as a stepping stone.

It may even be us who have said that to him to tempt him here. It was something Ralph was saying earlier in the season. Bring in talented young players; we get the benefit of that talent for a couple of years then they get sold on for a profit to supposed bigger and better sides, which suits the player, and we re-stock with the next talented player we identify. The only problem with talent identification under previous regimes is it's been shocking at times!

I’m nervous given the various levels of mess we’ve made of cb recruitment (from hoedt to, vestergaard, to danso)

Ross isn't involved in this one, so hopefully we're good.

I always had nerves around Vestergaard because of his lack of pace, ditto Hoedt. Good on the ball, but poor players for this league. Danso just isn't at the right level at all.

This guy looks a bit of a beast, more so than any of those previous 3.

I think Stephens is really coming on leaps and bounds lately. Think he’s looking a really good prospect and so comfortable on the ball when going forward.

Im not sure if centre back is our worse position anymore but salisu seems quite highly rated.

actually think the partner for ings should be a priority again. Not convinced with che  or obafemi

I imagine it may be Bednarek Salisu competes with. Competition is good for these things, makes everyone perform better. Not sure about a forward, seems we are linked with Ollie Watkins but I'm happy for Che to have a bit more of a chance.

I always thought Ralph preferred 3 centre backs and two attacking wing backs.

Maybe this guy might slot in with Stephens and Bednarek giving Bertrand and KWP the licence to roam more plus putting even more pressure in the pressing game.

I always thought Ralph's preferred formation was 4-2-2-2 and that he only played 5-3-2 /5-4-1 earlier this season because the players weren't grasping his tactics? I may have just invented that in my head though :)

Hasenhuttl has stated his preferred formation is the one we currently use... 4222

Playing with 3 centre backs earlier in the season hampered Saints as it reduces the number of midfielders pressing.

I just think if we lost ings to a injury or something our strikerforce looks pretty grim on paper none of them even slightly proven.. at the moment it’s fine as ings is taking the pressure off the others.

havent seen much from Adams really myself.. looks pretty strong with holding up the ball sometimes but still pretty scruffy finishing and passing, also tends to not make a lot of impact on games like even long can.. goes missing a lot for me

From the French side there are some reports that it is not a done deal.

A writer of Foot Mercato says:

At present, Rennes is still in pole position. His clan is optimistic. The player really wants to sign at @staderennais. There are still a few details to settle.

Rennes are potentially in the Champs league next year if they get through the qualifying round.

AS has more credibility to me... the amount of detail about the deal in the article I posted (reasons for picking us over Rennes, contract length, salary offered by both clubs) suggests they are probably getting their info direct from his agent. And the fact that the french side are constantly pushing the bizarre work permit angle... I can't think of any £10m+ player being denied a work permit.

AS is considered as a BS sports newspaper In Spain and invents loads of stories. Wouldn t take their view as Gospel.

They announce Neymar at Barcelona every 5 mins

They have to, they are a daily sports newspaper, there is only so much real news that they can report on every day. But the made up crap is going to be about Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atletico, Ronaldo, Neymar... not a Valladolid player moving to Southampton, that doesn´t sell papers or clicks.

Well I thought AS were probably fed by Valladolid, who don't really care where he goes as long as they get their cash, whereas the French reports more likely from Rennes who obviously have an agenda to be seen as being in the race bit surely a bit silly of them to suggest to their fans they are close to signing someone if they really aren't as will only lead to disappointment.

Re WP, doesn't meet the criteria. He may get an exception of course but perhaps that is why no other PL sides are ahead of us?

Nobody knows at this stage, but it doesn't sound like a done deal...yet. Now Sky have picked up on it I imagine Ralph will be asked about him today and he is usually quite open and honest.

I think Rennes were being strung along in case the move to us unexpectedly fell through. He doesn't meet the criteria to automatically get a work permit but players like him always get one on a case by case basis, however since there was a remote chance that he wouldn't get one, the Rennes deal was kept alive. That AS article says that the bureaucracy (ie: work permit process) took over a month and is now all but done, which is why they are now saying that the transfer to us is a done deal.

seeing as Ghana havent payed an international match since last November I doubt many Ghanaians would automatically meet the Work Permit requirements.

He would hit the 70 points under the UK's new immigration system though. (as long as you assume being able to play football in the Premier league is 'skilled')

Sky Sports latest article saying that we are still pursuing two CBs, Salisu and N'Dicka mentioned. Be good if true, particularly given that we could be minus Yoshida, Hoedt, Danso and Vestergaard from where we were last sunmer.

No it isn't. It is a terrible paper. Plus their story is essentially a copy and paste rehash from elsewhere.

Whoever we get - just hope it’s not the Lemina type who signs up gets PL wages then dicks about on a good screw and thinks just by standing on the stepping stone the top dogs will come running

Bit like the Norwegian fella - 5 year contract “I’ve got a deal to set me up for life” - already going back to Celtic this season - How about breaking a sweat to see if you can actually play for the team who is probably supplementing his wages. As someone pointed out on the Man U match thread aside from Romeu and Jan all our foreign players are currently broken.
(not including PEH as he has nailed his flag to the mast).

He hasn't gone to Celtic because he used Saints as a stepping stone. He simply wasn't good enough for us. Redmond, Armstrong, Boufal and Djenepo all far better options for the two 'number 10' roles in the 4222 system.

We all know he’s not very good -Obafemi giving him a verbal volley at Huddersfield last season said it all. Didn’t say he had used us as a stepping stone - more making the point of get a great contract then do sweet f a admittedly he hasn’t swung the lead as much of a few others on our books.

Was asked- said he didn't want to comment on any particular rumours but confirmed we are looking at centre backs. Said we're busy in the background (scouts etc) but he's focussed on the games more at the moment.

All usual stuff really.

Rennes President in l'Equipe this morning:

Regarding #Salisu: “We are working to make it happen as quickly as possible. This track is not the only one, because we know that it has not been acquired (...) We are still in the race. "

https://www.lequipe.fr/Football/Article/Nicolas-holveck-president-de-rennes-sur-les-transferts-on-est-dans-les-temps-de-passage/1153117

Rennes have already lost out on a couple of players this summer and I think their recruitment team is new so obviously keen to make a positive impression to their fans...but this doesn't read like a done deal.

Yeah, quality over quantity.

The summer under Poch that we didnt lose anyone vital and added Lovren, Wanyama and Osvaldo really took us forward. Even if the latter didn't exactly work out, the first two did and straight away too.

Alao think we will need a 2nd CB signing to be 4th choice assuming Danso and Vestergaard leave. Unless there is an Academy player they feel is ready.

Is Christoph Klarer still on loan in Austria? I always presumed he had a future with us.
