That's fucking dire.

Who are we competing with for scouting?

I presume all the London clubs are within catchment + Brighton.

I can see Brighton attracting talent due to lifestyle offerings...

Aren't most of our best "B team" players playing in our first team squad due to our lack of depth so it's filled with younger players not ready to be playing that level yet !?

It was a decent 18’s side today.

Fantastic result for the U18s today with a 2-2 draw versus Arsenal.

Only the 5th league game of the season that hasn't been a loss, so quite notable.

Sounds like Arsenal have poached this kid from us. Will be interesting to see if he makes it.

Good stuff.  Looks like Carson has been converted to a centre-back, too.

Looked to be a few U16’s playing again.

2 shots on goal for us over 90 minutes, FFS.

In fairness, Brighton have invested a lot of cash in their U23s and had Karbownik and Moises Caicedo playing whereas ours was almost an U18 side.

This second half of the season is basically a write-off. I guess we're just working out who of the U18's are worth keeping for next year, whilst letting go a number of the current 'U23's'. Also getting to grips with the new 'playbook' style.

Clearly lots of work to be done at the lower ages - hopefully the U14's, 15's 16's have got some talent, which we'll see coming through in the next few years.

Wouldn't be surprised if we see some focused investment in the U18's & 23's this summer.

Thought Bellis looked pretty good. Otseh-Taiwo made a couple of good runs but no end product. Tchaptchet looks ok but in a team that ships a lot of goals...

Moises Caicedo looked particularly good, and Karbownik has three caps for a decent Polish international side. They had a big decent centre back who completely dominated our small strikers and one on loan from Chelsea.

This has been a few years coming  - I was surprised at the defensive response to the comment from the Burnley new owner when it was pretty clear he had it spot on. What’s more worrying is it looks like it is a base talent rather than training issue. First stage of solving an issue is admitting you have one - I’m hoping it’s crystal clear to those who matter in the club or we’ve got 4 years of nothing coming through - which is a big problem if youth is your declared sustainability policy. Thing is we don’t need to produce Prem quality players - that is incredibly hard to do and takes patience, with our set up however we should be producing championship quality players who can bolster the squad when injuries hit (and hopefully the odd Prem standard player)

Sigh.

What a disaster of a season for these levels. Wonder what the grand plan is for next year? As this is beyond bad.

Indeed.  The counter argument to this of course is the fact that players are playing in higher age groups etc...

But, it is definitely fair to ask if both the coaching & recruitment has been good enough.

I think a lot can be put on the quality of player, and the depth of that quality throughout all the age groups tbh.

Ideally there needs to be an admission that there isn't enough quality, so there needs to be investment at all levels. Sadly, that won't happen so as a club it feels as if we could be staring at a difficult future.

To be fair it makes no difference for the U18s, there is no relegation from their league. The u23s are different they get relegated to the B division again. All assuming Saints maintain their top category academy status. Big problem is that it is harder to attract youngsters to Saints Academy if the top two academy levels are performing badly. Sincerely hope Crocker is doing something to address the current situation. This has been coming for a few years now, we have been living on past glories for far too long.

Presented without comment and no wonder, what is there to say?

After the much publicised shake-up of the Academy, the impact of the new direction and management team is producing the sort results that provide proper training for our lads at they prepare for first team duties. Keeping our traditions alive is very important.

It was a very young team, but not sure how much benefit the 16’s get from getting battered every week.

Must be soul-destroying for the youngsters.

I wonder what investment is needed to revamp the set up, scouting, coaching etc?

Do we have any ££ for this?

It's quite sad to see what's going on to be honest. The history of this club and our 'current' philosophy is built on developing  - but it doesn't seem as if there is much to develop. So the entire club is at a standstill really. We have no money to buy ready made first team players, and the younger age groups are seemingly not near any level - so we're 'paused' at all levels pretty much. I must admit, I don't know too much about how the academy has been managed in the last 4 or so years - but it seems like we're short in squad numbers across all age groups? (so we keep having to dip in to the younger groups at all levels in order to plug the gaps).

Coaching is possibly not great either? It's a long way from the Dodd and Williams days, that's for sure. Feels like people at the club have had to run all elements on financial scraps for years and now we're starting to see the output of that.

Wasn't the old slogan, Southampton Way, we don't buy success we breed it or something like that.

Burton Albion knocking us out of the FA Youth cup should have resulted in great embarrassment within the club, despite our owner the resources available at Saints are much higher and the academy results don't reflect that.

This lot are losing 7-1 away to Leicester’s U23.

The rot is setting in top to bottom.

These results wouldn’t be such a problem if they were providing us players for the first team but none of them are good enough or have been frozen out.

Part of me would love to bulk up the squad and let the likes of Diallo, Salisu, Tella, Valery (though on loan) play more and get some minutes in that league- maybe even taste what winning feels like before promoting to the first team but with our thin squad we can’t do that.

For reference; this Leicester U23 are also near the bottom ffs
