Pretty sure it started at 11 - I'm currently 3 hours ahead and it started at 2pm here...

Won the toss and batting first. Assume there's still the option of the uncontested toss if the visiting captain wants to bowl first?

Passed 400!  I wonder what the record score for the first day of the uk season is?  Can’t be too many 400+ scores given how treacherous early season conditions usually are

It looks like Hampshire will be top of the table after the opening matches, as they should go on and win this and they'll be the only team with maximum batting bonus points.

Haven’t been following really, what’s the new format and Is it here to stay (i.e replacing div 1 and 2).

The groups are based on last year's Bob Willis trophy, but tweaked and seeded. After the round robin stage, the top 2 in each group become "Division 1", the next 2 become "division 2" , and the last 2 "division 3". Each division then plays another 4 matches, with each team playing the 4 teams they have not played in the round robin. The winners of division 1 become the county champions, and play the second placed team in a 5 day Bob Willis Trophy final.

The format for next season and ongoing will be decided after this season has concluded.

Great start, Leics battled back a bit at the close but Hants well placed to win in the two remaining days.

Vince and Dawson battered that attack, Alsop solid ton when there was a little movement for their mediums. Easy to line the bowlers up for clattering around the park when the ball got older but wonderfully punishing ensuring Hants rather more threatening attack has plenty of time to knock them over twice. Sad for Leicestershire as they’ve historically produced Agnew, Taylor, Broad and Mullally, but there has to be better for them available in the Midlands, Lancs and York’s leagues bowling wise.

Get the win and ready for tougher opponents ahead.

Wonder if the pitches are better as can’t remember this many 100s around the country on opening round? Will help players develop if so, earn your wickets through pace/movement and skill/turn and flight. Wickets still being taken but few scores under 200 whereas under 100 is not unknown at all last few springs/autumns.

All over - great win by an innings and 105 runs.   Terrific start to the season.

T'was indeed.  All the matches in our group produced a result though. Wouldn't have expected Surrey to get beaten by Gloucs though, still cricket is a funny old game sometimes.

McManus in trouble over a "stumping" that never was. Might be in line for a ban for unsportsmanlike behaviour.

Yeah, the video doesn't look good. Not entirely convinced by James Vince's defence of McManus either, although I guess he's never going to throw him under the bus in that scenario.

It looks awful. Hand in the air with the ball, and takes the bails off with the other hand. He knew exactly what he was doing. He has to be banned for that, just a question of how long if imagine. Takes the gloss off a great victory.

Can't expect 600+ with 3 centurions every time. Poor shots by Alsop and Vince though. Wicket is a bit more lively than that of last week all the same.

Welcome back to Saintsweb WC. Do you come on here just for the cricket season nowadays?

Yep, would say it was pretty even days play, good challenge between bat and ball.

A good, well battled, knock from Holland and northeast.

On paper, our middle order looks very good. Still think we’re a top order bat and fast bowler or a solid off spinner short from being a top team.

Abbas hat-trick already, Middx 8 for 3. Wicket obviously isn't all that docile.

Some fantastic bowling as well it has to be said.

Middx 79 all out. Will Vince enforce the follow on? 240 lead. Amazing bowling from Abbas, Wheal cleaning up the tail. A potent blend of pace and accuracy from the trio, with Crane’s leg spin and Dawson able to hold up an end when needed. Great 58 from Kyle, and anything over 300 on a green surface a very handy score.

No follow on enforced. At 2 for 2 already Hants might well regret that decision. Batting really doesn't look easy on this track.

Two pretty mediocre shots though, given the circumstances. Didn't need to play either of them, and we saw yesterday that there wasn't a lot of swing on offer after the first 10-20 overs. See the new ball off and they'll tire pretty quickly. We won't win anything in red ball cricket with the top order we have - Weatherley and Alsop tend to do something decent one innings in 4 or 5, and Holland is an all-rounder filling a hole because our batting recruitment has been shit for years. For the most part, our batting tends to start at two wickets down.

Yes I do think we're still lacking a serious opener. Then again us older followers have been spoilt for great openers in years past. When you've seen Richards, Greenidge, Carberry, Terry and others it's hard to accept that Weatherly is the best you can find to open.

Was that the quickest hat trick in first class cricket, in terms of the state of the innings ?

Answer my own question: no it isn't. A hat trick has been taken in the first over of an international match on at least 2 occasions.

Difficult to imagine a more commanding position halfway through a 4-day game with no prospect of weather ruining things. What do we reckon for first thing tomorrow, then? Bat quickly for an hour or so and then declare, effectively giving Abbas and Abbott two opening spells either side of the extended break for the funeral? Five and a half sessions should be too much for most teams on a pitch that does seem to offer a little bit if you're willing to do the hard yards.

Pretty sad to see Steven Finn reduced to first change for a second division outfit and not really threatening much either.

Can’t believe Finn is only 32!  I agree shame to see his decline.

We’ve signed Cameron Steel today.  Seems to have a decent pedigree but has had a tough couple of years.  Article says it’s cover, and for only the next couple of months.  Will be interesting to see if he gets a game

We have been top of the leaague quite often early in the season but have not been top at the end of the season for nearly 50 years

Hants won the toss and are batting first. Weatherley looking as inept as usual, was lucky to survive what looked like a dropped catch behind the wicket in the first over and was eventually out for 8,lbw to the first ball of the first change bowler.

Since then unspectacular but solid stuff from Holland and Alsop to put us on 65/1 from 32 overs.

Anyone else think we should get some extra points for a first innings lead equal or superior to the follow-on number?

Gloucs obviously went into this match looking not to lose, aided and abetted by a dead wicket  they'll probably succeed with some awful slow batting. We weren't a lot better but at least our blokes tried the odd shot now and again.

Doesn't appear to be a "result" wicket, although I guess it might suddenly crumble to pieces on day 4. Not sure there's any merit in being awarded points for batting best on a road in the first innings, tbh.

Scott Currie comes in for Mason Crane at the Oval, sounds like a bit of a green top. Can't say I've seen much of Currie, apparently it's his second first-class game, so I assume he must have featured last season at some point?
