Is it weird that I have little interest in how England get on? I'll be watching the matches but can't really rustle up any enthusiasm for the national team at all. It's been that way for years as well. Went to the pub for England v Sweden in the World Cup and everyone was going mental when England scored but I barely even clapped.

I'll mainly be wanting the Saints players to do well whatever team they are playing for.

Same. And felt this way for years.

I even feel a sense of amusement when we get beaten my a 'minnow'. 'cause it's inevitable.

Think I still suffer from fatigue over the 'golden generation' bollocks.

(And Gerrard and Lampard STILL can't play in midfield together).

Fucking shit manager Southgate.  Did ok at last WC but mostly easy games. He just doesn’t have the flare and Henderson is so his sort of player. JWP wouldn’t be in my England team but feel sorry for him. Such a great crop of players. If only we got someone like Poch to take the job we’d be winning everything.

This line has probably been trotted out for as long as I remember, certainly since 1970. After we failed to qualify in 1974 and 78 ... many would say "if only they appointed Cloughie..." and same for much of the 1980's.

In truth, no; players aren't good enough and our organisation of them isn't as good as our rivals.

And let's not forget when we unleashed teenage protege Wayne Rooney on to the world stage.... only a matter of time before we win it....

Remind me again how many goals he scored in World Cup Final Tournaments.

Doubt it. This is JWP we're talking of not Roy Keane.

Would be a surprise if JWP doesn’t go. I bet we take 3 or even 4 right backs too. Don’t rate Southgate at all. We finally have players to pick from that could be a new ‘golden generation’, but I don’t think Southgate is the man to win trophies.

JWP is versatile, has leadership qualities, is reliable, fit, not injury prone and can take a penalty. He’d be a loss to that squad. It looks to be another “building for the future” squad if the likes of Bellingham and Saka are selected.

Sorry if JWP is personally disappointed at leaving the England squad but it pleases me that there are no Saints' players involved with the boring and useless national team.  I gave up supporting England a long time ago.  A summer holiday and a rest will be far better for JWP and Danny Ings.  My only interest is how well they perform for the Saints and this will help them.

As for England, the press and TV will continue to overhype the team, the players and the wealthy clubs that employ them.  Not interested.

I wouldnt be surprised at all if JWP is left out.

Henderson, Rice, Kalvin Phillips will be the 3 ‘defensive’ midfielder roles in the squad.

I don’t think I can complain about that as long as Henderson is fit. All have had better seasons and Henderson is obviously going for what he has achieved in the last few years.

All 3 of those are either injured or recovering from injury .

I can't see him getting in ahead of those 3, although I reckon the last spot will be between Phillips and JWP. The saving grace for JWP could be Reece James. If he goes as a utility player, he could oust Phillips and free up a place for JWP. No way Henderson or Rice would be left behind unless they won't be 100% for the first match.

There seems to be much more media buzz around Phillips than there is for JWP, if he drops JWP it will hardly get a mention in the main national press, he's just not a player who attracts a lot of attention and for Southgate would be the easy one to drop.

Agreed. Its bad enough that Southgate is a bang average manager with next to no tactical nuance. Watching him mismanage that squad in the big games is so hard. But if he then drops Ings for Watkins and DCL, and JWP for Philips i'll be supporting St Stu and St Adams.

Lingard omitted too apparently...

yeah i can see that - played 5 months - did well but this is what southgate said at end of march and scored 4 goals in remaining 9 games so probably not enough.

"Jesse, of the three, is a bit more fortunate to be in," said Southgate. "Luke and John have performed over a period of time.

"We've got injuries in the attacking areas that have opened up an opportunity for Jesse but, I have to say, his performances for West Ham have been excellent.

"Ideally, you'd be saying you have to do it for a little bit longer but that's not been the option this time around."

As much as I’m happy to see Armstrong and Adams have a good tournament individually I’ll also be more than happy to see the jocks getting rinsed in every game.

There’s stuff I despise with the national set-up but I’m English/Southampton through and through. 3 Lions only during the Euros.

What a joke, Prowsey not in the final 26 man squad! And yet Southgate was praising him the other day. Picking players on form over reputation, yeah right. Southgate is full of rubbish.

The biggest positive for me out of this is at least Prowsey will get a well overdue rest this summer before reporting back for pre season with us.

Couple of absolute duff picks ahead of JWP - i.e. FOUR right backs and a 17 year old in midfield.. And I am not convinced that Kalvin Phillips is better than JWP, he certainly doesn't have the weapons that JWP has (dead ball). Shitter.

Yep official now Ward Prowse omitted.

Got 4 right backs though 🙄

Should have taken jwp for his set pieces alone, can't see where phillips is better than him at anything really. Four right backs too!

Feels like JWP is very unlucky to miss out with that squad.

What scenario makes a 4th right-back more valuable than the best set-piece specialist in the league!?

Saints and England seem to have a really uncomfortable relationship.

Our players seem to have to move mountains to get a call-up during qualifying periods, but when the big tournaments come up they get left out (unless they happen to sign for a big club just beforehand).

So Southgate has used the increase to a 26 man squad to include 10 defenders and only 2 centre-forwards. Watkins can feel very aggrieved at missing out. Think we’ll be a dull watch.

Seems like madness to me, our player of the season and would be perfect for the way England play/score goals. Dropped for one of four right backs or an injured top-four player - as is always the way with England.

Still, I expect at least one of the injury-maybes will pull out in the next week and I'd expect JWP to be top of the list to replace them. He could still play.

Don't know why anyone is surprised it will always be the same.

England will never win anything anyway as soon as we play a decent side we will lose and i have given up watching.

I'll confess to not being the most avid of England fans but seems a bit churlish to decide not to support them just because JWP isn't in the squad.  I'll be cheering them on anyway (not that I'm expecting them to win it).  If I'm honest I don't really think JWP would have played even if he had made the squad - about the best thing he has going for him is dead ball delivery but he has to be on the pitch in order for that to make any difference and going on past team selections that was always going to be unlikely.  Least this way his reputation will be enhanced should England have a shocker.

Not sure what Philips brings to be honest. Other than the fact he plays for the media darlings of Leeds. Got to say you should have JWP ahead of him, even if it is for dead ball ability. Crock of shit anyway, playing for England has always been about reputation than form.

Southgate has been a bottler since he missed that penalty. It's always easier to drop someone from a smaller squad and include a half injured player from a so called bigger team. I mean what sort of weak twat drops Lingard from the squad then says he'll play him in this week's first friendly...?

Summed up by Henderson still being crocked along with Slab Head  also crocked and picked.............hey ho money talks and getting the tin-tak as a manager is a pretty lucrative even if it is only 18 months ish of £3m pa.

Feel sorry for JWP, as he is a man for many positions, and as we have seen has a bloody good engine.

Imo JWP offers more than Phillips, and taking four right backs is a joke (Prowsey can fill in there too).

Feel very sorry for him, but from a selfish pov it's probably a good thing that he can now get a full summers rest after playing every minute of the last two seasons.

Henderson who hasn't played all season and still injured makes every bit of sense as taking Jack Grealish who is barely fit and hardly played either.

Southgate just didn't have the bottle to pick up the phone to Henderson and tell him he's not in it.

Would have put Watkins in there over Calvert-Lewin aswell.

JWP was never getting in that squad no matter what anyway.

So just looked at it. We've got 2 strikers. If Kane gets injured or suspended our tournament hopes are as good as over. DCL is simply not good enough. Let alone Kane simply getting tired.

How can we go with a 26 man squad and not pick suitable cover in the most pivotal area? At this point Watkins, Bamford and ings etc have been dropped for sako, a 3rd/4th right back, and sancho (when we already have sterling, rashford, grealish, foden, Mount). That's essentially 7 possible wingers in 2 spots 😆.

As for right backs. TAA, walker, tripper, James...

Why are there 10 defenders, 4 right backs and 7 wingers 🙈... like wtf.

With our attacking talent we should be one of the clear favourites for this tournament - reckon the minimum we should be expecting is semis or finals. But we are very blatantly about to turn up and play with 4/5 defenders and two central midfielders. At least we'll have some quality counter attacking wins vs minnows like the Czechs and Scotland to look forward to.

My biggest fear is that we are predictably shite but progress far enough for Southgate to get to the world Cup and waste yet another generation of talented players.

FFS.

Fuck me. Some of the replies on here are unbelievable. He’s clearly not at the required level, had a poor end to the season, but again it’s a conspiracy against Saints. As for people not supporting England because of it, what are they, 10 years old?

Danny Ings is our only player that deserves to be anywhere near the England squad.

So you see the reason for taking 4 RB's?

In your opinion, and yours is flawed  because you don't like him and has nothing to do with his ability.

Looks like The England manager agrees with me, unless he “doesn’t like him” either. It’s everything to do with ability, he’s not good enough. It’s the reason he didn’t play when we had a cracking side and it’s the reason he’s not going to the Euros.

You'd think that having missed that penalty in 1996 and the all of England bemoaning that penalties eliminated England. Looking back and knowing that Venables left Le Tiss out, probably the best penalty taker in the world at that point, he'd want a guy like JWP that can take free kicks and penalties so the likes of him don't have to when others bottle it.

Looking at the squad that has 10 defenders and 4 right backs and 7 wingers, I'm not convinced by his judgement either but hopefully its not born out of irrational dislike like yours is.

picking 4 right backs just seems silly to me. Strikes me as very weak managerial response to getting some criticism for dropping liverpool's right back last time round.

Walker will play right of a 3. James will give cover at CB and midfield as well as RB. Trippier will cover both sides. The only player picked as just a RB is TAA.

He's picked 10 defenders for a team that'll play with a 3 plus wing backs, so essentially 5 at the back. 2 players per position, with some offering flexibility and 1 of them giving midfield cover is sensible.

Yep. He's decent but not an international central midfielder by a long distance.
