you pick!!
The appointment follows an intense, but thorough search, with the Club having received a very high volume and quality of applications, the majority of which came from well respected managers currently working in the top two divisions of English football and abroad."
Those names don't look like a 'high volume of well respected managers to me' and I'm guessing you are guessing.

Brown
Howe
Adkins
M Adams
Tony Adams
Hart
Dowie
And?

think you have proved it yourself, you cannot come up with anyone better!
I'll tell you what, you come up with the list of candidates and I will pick who I think we should appoint....I'm sorry I'm not privvy to that information.
I'm guessing you are happy with the appointment.....well here's a differing opinion,I'm not....I'm also guessing you went Wilde for mike and 'in cortese we trust'.....get over yourself,it's not my job to make the decisions at SFC but it is my job to question those decisions or applaud those decisions, that's my duty as a saints fan.

To write someone off without giving them a chance is madness.
To predict he will be a massive success again madness.
He will need time to settle and get to know the players unfortunately, which will mean promotion is nothing like as assured as it was (even if it was).
My big fear is that he turns out to be really good and then is poached by a Prem club before we get a chance to once more challenge for a place amid the elite.
I like the sound of him, he is obviously intelligent, I like it that his teams play football and as long as he is allowed to manage without undue interferance then maybe we can once and for all put this ridiculous managerial merry-go-round to bed.
The merry-go-round will probably always exist it is the norm for 95% of the clubs in the 4 leagues, why should we be any different?
In an ideal world we would all like a ferguson, wenger or moyes but that's not the way it is for us,high turnover of managers isn't anything to be scared of.....spurs and man city havnt done too bad and their turnover is just as frequent as ours.
-
His skin,it needs to be thicker.....oh and a decent set of ear plugs might be handy.

So many 'excellent' 'best appointment' ever, even 'genius appointment' statements, yet if you show an ounce of trepidation, hesitancy, think it is a huge gamble and worried that this appointment is shorterm or shortsighted in anyway you get a barrage of 'just because he is'nt a 'big name' or 'you know nothing about him'.
What makes some on here think they are more qualified to post their opinion 'as fact' than others that are not so convinced it will all be rosy in the garden?
He did well at Scunny, well thats it then,it is written in stone...Adkins the saviour that will turn the fortunes around take us all the way to the promised land.
He did well at a club with low expectations, got them promoted, took them down, got them promoted with really no pressure and safe and comfortable in the knowledge his job was safe....he was permantly in his comfort zone.
As i say, good luck i hope you do really well, but some are peeing their pants at this prospect, based on no more than those who are slightly underwhelmed:)
Is there no middle ground when it comes to some people?
Good luck Nigel,prove me wrong.
And before the who 'would you have liked' is wheeled out as the defence for adkins,Possibly Mowbray,Zola/Clarke......now if they had been appointed i would still have some reservations i would not have declared it at 'excellent' 'genius' he/they will do a brilliant job for us' as though it is fact.
Exactly!
-
you say why pick him, most seem to think its sensible - if you can't think of anyone better maybe Cortese couldn't either!
I'm not getting paid suitcases full of dosh to make those decisions but if I was I would have gone for a more mature, better qualified candidate....I'm just not a fan of managers with 'potential' or 'up and coming',this to me means gamble, something we don't need to do.
I'm all in favour of shortening the odds and appointing a 'new' manager isn't doing that.
If it upsets people that I'm not in favour of Adkins then too bad,I'm sure that everybody on here hasn't agreed with a team selection, playing a certain player or the formation of the team and this is no different.......just because I don't agree with the choice doesn't mean I don't support saints any less.
IMO this is a big gamble and I don't agree that he is the right man for the job at the moment,it doesn't have anything to do with the rumours about MoN or KK or any other silly rumour,it's just a gut feeling that it's going to end in tears.
Please prove me wrong and I will hold my hands up.

Or write it in that they have to work on half pay (ala RL model) or even better they copy the Pompey model. No real solution imho, if a player wants out, let them go. I have for a long time believed that more of a player's wages should be performance based.
I'm not in favour of letting a player break his contract, they already have too much power in the game this is why clubs are in financial trouble....the power needs to be shifted back to the clubs.
You could have situations (probably already have) where players from a club that has a chance of relegation hold back for fear of getting injured and spoiling any chances of getting a contract elsewhere thus not giving 100% to the club in trouble.

Any names? By higher level, you mean the prem, since Adkins has established himself as a NPC manager. That said, neither Holloway or Avram (the two prem managers linked to the job, according to the rumour-mill) stood above the crowd. I liked Tony Mowbray but there were again question-marks over him. Once the pie-in-the sky names are discounted, names do not readily spring to mind and NA looks increasingly like a decent choice - yes a gamble but who isn't when they're up and coming - he's certainly not in the one-season-wonder mould of Eddie Howe.
I don't know who was on the list so no names, and you said it, he is a gamble,is it one we can afford......don't get me wrong,I will be behind the new man as I want saints to do well and get out of this sh!t league but I just feel that this is all going to end in tears.
-
Tbh it annoys me when I see ex saints players playing at a higher level and raking in vast pay-packets when we are languishing in the l1 sh!t swamp.....these are the same players who happily got us relegated and then left the sinking ship for another lucrative contract at another club.
All clubs should write into contracts that if a club relegated then the players have to stay a minimum of 12 months to try and get the team back up.
Otherwise what do they care if a club gets relegated? They just walk into another contract elsewhere.....if they had that clause in their contract they would certainly try a bit harder to keep the team up,instead of giving up and moving on.
-
Assuming that MoN and KK were never starters (I dont think the latter has it anymore at any rate), who would you have gone for?
Somebody who's been a manager longer than 4 years, who's the finished article, who has managed at a higher level......let Adkins continue his training at another club we needed somebody a bit more qualified.
Always aim as high as you can afford and I'm sure that on that list of candidates there must have been somebody better qualified.
-
I'm afraid the expectation level at this club will be too much pressure for the bloke.
After all the team were being booed at half time of the first game of the season.....Adkins is seen as the saviour of our season by some so as soon as he loses a couple in a row they will be straight on his back.
-
If they were inundated with a high volume of quality applications why the fook have they picked Adkins?
To all the blindfaith 'in Adkins we trust' brigade,be prepared to have to insert a different name in your 'in ~~~~~ we trust' within a year.
Cheap option IMO.
-
Shut up with that arrogant talk!
So my post is arrogant because I don't agree with his appointment.....sums this forum up really.
Tow the company line or be labeled as a lunatic.
-
KIndly provide a list of "possibles"
If you read my post again I have already stated that I am unsure who should get the job.
Frankly it's not my job,and I don't really care who gets the job as long as they drag us out of this sh!tty league, out of the championship and into the prem.
I don't think Adkins will be that man and appointing him sends out the message that we are not as flush and determined to do that.
I could be wrong but I'm probably not.

That's a silly quote to make though, because the majority of quotes (probably about 80/90%) on the scvnphorpe forum are praising him for being their best ever manager and don't want him to go - they think they're certs. for relegation without him.
So that's just a case of picking 1 post out and basing your opinion on that.
That's right,I picked out the quote that best summed up my feelings about his appointment.
Some think he will be the new messiah, some are unsure and will sit on the fence and some think he is not the man for the job, these are all opinions pretty much based on nothing.
Nobody can be sure of what will happen but my opinion/gut feeling is he will fall on his arse and we will be looking for another new manager within a year.
he is a new/up and coming manager with possible potential but I don't think that is what we need right now.
I don't know who should get the job but I think we need a manager that has done their learning, served their time and is the finished product.
All IMO.
-
There seems to be a lot of hoping, wishing and willing happening on this thread.......this says to me that a lot of people are unsure about Adkins.
You can dress it up as much as you like and you can cross your fingers bury your head and hope for the best but the truth is Adkins is a 'prospect for the future' not a finished article, ready made, seen it all before manager,he is still learning and tbh it not what we need right now.
He is a gamble,ok we all wish he succeeds because that means our team is doing well but IMO I don't think he will.
-
Let's not beat about the bush Adkins is a learner,he's only been doing the job for what? Four years??
We need a manager who knows the game inside out and can kickstart the players who have got above themselves.
What we don't need right now is a gamble manager,he might be up and coming but let him go and do his 'up and coming' elsewhere.
Our situation should be left to the big boys, not the young man with possible potential.
-
I don't think he's the right man for the job so not really enthused about his arrival if it happens.
This quote from the scunny forum stands out for me....
'He's going to need good luck, limited manager sacked by spring'
This says it all for me and I believe this will be the case.
-
It is p!ss poor but it's hardly his fault....it is Pardews.
-
Turned down the best job he will probably ever had......don't think so,the boy is a fool.
He may have been given an interview but he didn't hear anything, then he heard that Adkins was getting the job so through fear of upsetting the bompey fans he made a statement saying he turned us down.....damage limitation that's all.
-
In the early 90's I was in Spain for a while and they loved him, everytime he gave an interview the Spanish used to go nuts about him.
That man from the 90's is not the man you see today and although he has a wealth of experience but he's not the right man for us.
Adkins out. But when?
