  1. Magnificent team performance, with everyone playing their part and giving 100%. Great collective defence led from the front and always dangerous on the break. Diallo's best performance yet for Saints and demonstrated tonight why Ralf has claimed that he is the future of Saints. JWP and Ings pure inspiration for the world class goal. KWP was excellent against Mane.  Ralf's pure, uncontrolled show of passion at the end was the icing on the cake. Happy New Year Saints ... you have lit up a gloomy day.

Only one way this is going...0-4 L’Pool. We’ll knock it around a bit and take at least 50% possession, but ultimately not score because of the ponderously slow build-up play allowing 11 men to get behind the ball. They’ll hit us on the break...0-1 at HT with the remainder coming as we try to catch the game. We just don’t have the quality I the team to match them.

    That’s the spirit

I'm with Ottawa on the Shane Long discussion. He's no doubt a lovely person and a good servant of the club, but his commentator cliche description as 'not a natural goal-scorer but a hard-running, hard-working 'constant nuisance' to defenders' is wearing thin. He doesn't challenge or even jump for 50:50 high balls in the top half of the pitch and - as we all know - the minute he's named in the squad we know there's one less person in the team who is going to score a goal. I don't think he can hold the ball up as well as others, his positional sense and ball control skills are weaker than other options.

I would much rather see what our supposedly super-talented young strikers can do and given a full game to prove themselves.

Think Walcott has got a second lease of life at his home club, is working really hard front and back...and certainly deserves a start. Djenepo I like, but he needs more grit and less prickle...much better going forward than back, just needs to be given the brief to run at people and be forgiven losing possession once or twice doing so. Hopefully will score a couple quickly and gain confidence he needs. Redmond a great player in there but something is wrong...hiding a foot injury, brittle confidence?

Vestergard a big loss now...in defence, attack and play-making. Hope Bednarak can learn from him and add a 40-yard cross-field diagonal pass to the wing-backs into his game. KWP a revelation...showing up Bertrand's increasing lack of edge.

Would be very happy to have this posted back at me if Long starts and scores a hatrick in a 3-0 win tomorrow! (or any day for that matter).

    very good summary

While all that maybe true, we are already in the premier league and they aren’t. Irrespective of squad investment, the odds are stacked in favour of a premier league side not getting relegated v a championship side getting promoted.

The next obvious difference is we have a premier league squad and they don’t. Strip out the loans in Lampards season, that squad have been nowhere near good enough for years. You’d therefore think it will cost a lot more to upgrade their squad than the difference in the initial purchase price.

So it’ll cost a lot more and have a much higher risk of having premier league status.
I do think it’s fair to question why Derby would be seen as a better investment than us from a cold, hard business perspective.

It is a fair question, a big factor as with any purchase will be the sale price.

I feel exactly the same, he was good on the ball and energetic. Making probing forward passes.

    Early days but

Agreed. I really liked the fact that he was demanding the ball from the moment he came on the pitch and was then looking for the forward pass rather than the 5 yard sideways pass.  That is especially impressive on your first match for a club with new teammates. It suggests someone who not only has confidence but also wants to be a starting player not just a squad player. High hopes for him and wish him the best of luck.

It's true to a degree - he ruptured his Achillies right at the very end of 18/19, and would've probably missed all of last season if lockdown hadn't happened.

"Never been the same" is a bit premature; he's only made three starts since the injury and hasn't completed 90 minutes yet. It's a long way back from the injury he had - that's primarily why Chelsea want to loan him out: he needs game-time and lots of it, and they can't afford to give him the minutes here and there when they're under pressure to win every week.

I don't think it would be a good loan on a few grounds. Regardless of the serious injury he's slowly coming back from, he's had a poor fitness record all his career. Mainly, though, I just can't picture him fitting into Hasenhuttl's tactics as he doesn't work off the ball. He's a stroller.

    Would be an odd gamble.

    I agree

he was bloody amazing against us a couple of seasons ago at SMS. Best player on the pitch by a country mile. Perhaps that was as good as it got?

You're right, he controlled the game. Havent seen him play like that since though

Seems most have gone underground and rely on recommendations via Telegram. I have a superb one for £40 pa and includes every tv series, latest movies and ppv boxing etc as well as every PL game. Can’t fault it.

That sounds good. Can you share which one via the Board or via PM, please?

He's a talent for sure, but never applies that talent, he's probabaly had 4 good games for us...

    West Brom away

    Palace away

    Man Utd home

    Probably another I've missed.

He deserves abuse for playing in an FA Cup Semi Final and wandering about like it was a pre-season friendly. Disgrace of a performance.

I agree. Brilliant when he wants to play (played Pogba off the pitch) but might as well not be on the pitch when not bothered (which is most of the time).

Looks like crackpot le tissier has finally realised hes humiliated himself and embarrassed our city with his conspiracy theory garbage. Many Saints fans have either stopped following him or muted the misinformation hes been forwarding about covid 19. Its been very painful for us Saints fans, who viewed him as a hero and now frankly hes become a total joke. Le Tissier is so naive and seemingly cant stop his thoughts and keep them to himself.  In the past ive stood up for Matt, when he was getting grief for his Cortese comments. But now i cant defend him in anyway as repeated requests from many fans towards him have been totally ignored. I dont know, if he will get sacked from Sky Sports, im sure they will have looked at what hes been saying and heard the complaints.

Just wanted to add that its laughable hes playing the victim card with all the dangerous misinformation hes been forwarding to thousands of people.

I guess he's escaping attitudes like this; can't blame him. By the way, which part of you is actually a loyal Saint.
