  1. Strongly recommend against mid-2000s 3-series, several mates have had big bills with their 330d's. And don't drive through puddles...

5 Series seem to be better.

For what its worth I was in the same position as you 4 years ago, bought a high mile Golf MK4 diesel (120k on the clock) on the basis that (a) it was well depreciated and (b) probably a good 'un based on the fact it had got that far. 70k miles later and its still going strong and has only lost about 20% of the purchase value. Likely to keep it until it goes pop now.

Check and double-check the service history, find out when big services are due (cambelt and clutch are the big ££££ jobs) and make sure you follow the service schedule (use a good independent you trust, not a main dealer - unless they can give you a good fixed-price service package like Honda do for example).

Clutches should be good for 150k unless its been abused, cambelts often need doing every 70k. On a big car you're looking at not much change from a grand for clutch service done properly, and £300 for a cambelt. If its been regularly serviced nothing else should go wrong - you'd be unlucky to have a major engine issue. Probably electrics are the thing to worry on most on modern cars - always expensive to fault-find and fix, and no option for non-manufacturer parts.

  2. If a crime is committed here, it should be tried here. English justice should be sufficient for foreign powers. The Extradition Act is fundamentally one-sided and unfair and should be repealed, its only their because Blair was in Bush's pocket after 9/11

For all the dodgyness of their dealings (which make the Pompey Takeover Saga look straightforward) the Natwest Three are a prime example http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NatWest_Three

McKinnon undoubtedly did wrong, but the offence was committed here and should be tried under the Computer Misuse Act.

  3. I always thought he was a prime candidate as a paedo. I have watched a little of last nights programme and do wonder how the girls after being molested still went back time and again. Surely they must have known it was wrong and hardly forced to go back.

As for the adults who were interviewed and saw the evidence and said nothing, they are complicit and deserve to be outcast.

They're children, and they do what they are told by adults, particularly charismatic, famous, powerful adults. Much more innocent time back then, there wasn't really a huge focus on stranger danger and paedophiles (the latter probably only really came to the fore after the Sarah Payne murder). Unfortunately its an all too familiar pattern.

  4. I don't have a view on whether he did this or not as I haven't paid great attention to the story. However, it was a very different world back then and there were very different attitudes to sexualisation of children (Brooke Shields, Jodie Foster, etc.). And that's before we get to the 16yo page 3 girls and "art" photographers like David Hamilton & Sally Mann. Stars like Saville had a huge amount of power, as witnessed by his ability to raise money for charity and his status on TV. And child abuse is all about exploiting power whether that's a teacher, scout leader, parent, or TV/rock star. So many allegations from the 60s/70s catalogue abuse that went on for decades.

  5. Some talent in the Paralympics as well, Vanessa Low, Iris Pruysen & Oksana Masters spring to mind. And our own Bethany Woodward. Didn't quite get FHM naming Hannah Cockroft as the fittest bird there but perhaps predictable given she has a decent pair of norks...

  6. You need to go on a Caribbean cruise on Ventura or any big cruise ship, the Brits are just as bad. They will reserve loungers on the opposite side of the ship so they can get some sun in the afternoon. Lounger shortages are probably the biggest cause of security incidents onboard.

  7. This was pretty special

I love how the Archers explodes into carnage and then Beatties face when holding Pahars aloft

I was there in the Archers when that happened, can just about spot myself in a dodgy orange check shirt (ffs). Utterly mental and complete carnage. Matty's final goal just beats it though.

Honourable mention to the winner against Wolves in the QF of the FA Cup run, can't remember who scored it other than that the Northam exploded and I ended up a couple of rows down due to a bit of a bundle /understatement. I think it was at that point we all started to dream of a final.

  8. If selling on eBay make sure you take note of the IMEI and serial numbers, too many scrotes who will try and rip you off by claiming it arrived locked or claiming damage/trying to send back a broken version of the same phone. Take really good quality shots of every surface of the phone, particularly the screen, and make sure its so well-packed it would be impossible to damage in transit (take pics of the package before sending, and insist on special delivery as well).

Have had good and bad experiences of buying/selling phones on eBay and the above will ensure you're as protected as you can be as a seller
