Now checked, the end was still open in 1984.
What a glaring miss by Worthington for Saints, something Long or Adams would have been crucified in here for.
yeah, but at least we then got the amazing 5-1 replay. I seem to remember Steve Williams scoring an amazing goal. Not sure, but I think we even went 0-1 down early in the game.

Pretty confident we would have scored the penalty then? Out of interest, who on the pitch would you have wanted to have taken it?
Of the people on the pitch at the time, either KWP or Dibling.

Not legal, but Alan Ball when he took over as manager apparently banned it from training to knock the Branfoot launches forward by the defenders every time. Players who launched into the channels in training matches without targeting a specific striker/winger were fined.
I'd do something similar with this squad - I'd ban passing backwards. They need to instinctively think forward first. Passing back should be a last resort rather than the default option.

I thought I would give the Northam fan zone a try today and think it worked well as pre and post match entertainment. The Moonrunners band were pretty decent and got some atmosphere going, even after the match.
Not sure why people were congregating outside the fan zone in the rain as there was space inside and under cover - and that is what caused the blockages.
The biggest issue with the fan zone is that it is not meant to be the highlight of the day, which today it was!
Fair play to the club for trying to improve the matchday experience.

alternatively, we could have gone to a flat back four and brought a winger on.
Exactly this! It would have been interesting to see KWp and Edozie together on the left, which I think would have created more chances. As well as Sugawara creating chances on the right. Hopefully Russ will learn from these type of games.
I am looking forward to see how we setup at home against Forest.

I believe that if there is an email associated with the other users then they will get them sent to their own app. My son does not have an email address setup so both tickets have appeared in my app. This gives me more flexibility as he will miss games when at Uni.

Ronnie E was class. Thanks for bringing his name up 👍
The relationship on the pitch between Ronnie and Matty was the best I have ever seen live. I remember an away game at Coventry where Ronnie did an amazing piece of skill and setup a goal - i think for Matt - and then turned to the away fans and took a bow!

He would make a great captain

Shankland does seem like a natural goal scorer in the mould of Sir Rickie. Would like him and potentially Morris too.

it looks like they are going to miss out on the title to the team formed by Yorkshire immigrants - Eyup-spor!

there's nothing to stop us from offering him an improved contract with a bigger release clause

Tickets went on general sale yesterday at 3pm, so members definitely had an opportunity. From the OS:
I bought mine at about 7pm last night and it looked like there was still about 50-100 left.

I wonder if beating palace to his signature means that they have got Maehle who they are linked with. Personally I would prefer him to KWP, more experience and more proven capability.

Barely missed more than five home games a season since the mid/late 80s, season ticket since the late 90s and do about 15 aways a season and I’m seriously debating if I’m done with it.
Weirdly going down might mean I’m actually more likely to renew, as I’ve realised it’s the premier league that I hate the most.
The money in the top flight has ruined the game completely. It’s impossible to compete. Real supporters take a back seat to tourists, games are constantly moved for tv, atmospheres almost everywhere are diabolical, the media rub their hands with glee at anyone but the big six being torn apart, talk of winter breaks and players that are so disconnected from us and reality that I may as well just be watching a soap opera.
Honestly what’s the point? If we stay up those things will only get worse, the top flight has stripped the soul from the game and I’m not sure I can be bothered with it anymore.

Couldn't have put it better myself!
100% how I feel.

no wonder so many players seem to have an attitude - mollycoddled or what!
-
oh my, however did we finish 8th last season then if we are missing 3 quality players. We could spend 60 or 70 million on the positions you say, we probably wouldn't finish any higher in the league though. We are what we are and only really serious money will change that.
Exactly what a lot of us were saying as we left the stadium after the last game - "how the feck did we just finish 8th!" it was laughable. We can't keep relying on everyone else being shyte to scrape by. Surely we should be trying to be as good as we possibly can?
-
What are the glaring weaknesses then ?
Depends what formation we play, but assuming 4-2-3-1 then I would say CB, DM & AM (No10) which is really the spine of the team.

It's not an entertainement industry, it's football.
I wouldn't judge it purely based on last seasons performances - hopefully this season will be much more entertaining!

Man City at home last season was the worst display I have seen in ages against the so called big clubs - it was as if we had spent all week telling the players how great City were as we never got near them and seemed scared everytime they had the ball and we just got rid of it. Anyway the King is dead Long Live the King.
Any news if our new backroom staff are there today?
Agreed. That was the performance that made me question Puel's capabilities.

Actually I've just said "it's down to the schedule and player fatigue". There is a ton of evidence proving this is a significant factor. No amount of facilities can magically make players untired, especially with the cumulative effects of doing that for months on end. Well, blood doping can apparently but I'm hoping we're not involved in that one.
The tactics were driven by the need to manage the number of games the team was playing. This was a factor from August to the start of February, and from April to the end of the season. The two months we didn't have back to back games we only played 4 fixtures, all away from St Mary's, scoring 4 twice and narrowly losing to Man U and Spurs.
It's really not hard to see that Puel's options were hugely limited, and personally I feel that we managed it very well and but for a couple of bounces could have won a Cup and got ourselves to the Europa knockouts. Finishing above 8th with all that going on as well and the way the fixtures fell (plus Everton's investment) was a difficult ask.
Do you think we would have had this problem if Poch was still in charge - because I don't. He would have ensured that the players are fit enough to do their jobs, twice a week if necessary.
Puel did not get the team fit and instead gave the players a ready made excuse by saying they couldn't possibly play 2 games a week. The players have been allowed to get lazy - which is the reason we have not seen any real pressing this season.
Puel then proceeded to play a deliberately weakened side game after game. By the time we were out of all competitions, the players couldn't even manage 1 game a week!
The first job of a manager is to get the best out of the team at his disposal and Puel has failed miserably at this and deserves to be sacked as a result.
-
I am renewing mine today.
With all the reminder letters, emails and texts it might have been easier for the club to phone those who hadn't renewed yet to find out why. Would have given many of us the opportunity to make our feelings on Puel known at the time of renewal.
In reality my protest of waiting to the last minute has been completely pointless!
-
My expectation is for a manager that tries to win every game and doesn't give already molly coddled and lazy players more excuses such as not being capable of playing 2 games a week or being able to press for long periods of a game.
Until that changes we will never achieve anything and the football will be as dire as it has been this season.

That's a great lineup but I would put Romeu at 4 and bring Fernandes in at 8.
