went to Spurs in 90. Tremendous experience. First away game for me. Didn't frequent any drinking holes in Covent garden though.
went to Coventry the year after too. A Shearer penalty took it to a replay, which I think we won. Another great experience, although a geezer creating space in a busy away end by having a piss wasn't key to that. It did stick in my mind though for some reason.
Haha. I remember that exact piss! Caused a huge crowd surge down the terrace. I got kicked out of that game but managed to sneak back in when they opened the gates for the last 10 minutes.

Absolutely spot on.
Towards the end of his career, I agree. But he got dog's abuse for the first few years. There used to be audible groans around The Dell when his name was read out on the teamsheet.

We have become toxic, I don’t know why, I often think about it relative to previous times when we tended to be a happy go lucky bunch. I don’t know what it would take to bring it back. One factor I do believe has had an impact is the recruitment policy of signing bland in character players that we struggle to identify with. Re Martin Keown, I find him to be one of the most intelligent and insightful pundits out there.
We're no more or less toxic than any other club. It's the modern football fan for you. When I first started going regularly in the late 80s most people were going not to be entertained but to support and represent their city and club. The support was better and the atmospheres, on average, were better. Now, there are a lot more fans who demand to be entertained and who aren't there to support in the same way as previously.

I post a blog post relevant to this topic.
Away with your rational talk.
Great post though.

Cancun
in The Lounge
If you're going to Cancun then you've probably chosen it for a reason. However, if you want to step outside the all inclusive enclave then at least take a day trip to Tulum. I'd also recommend Merida if you want to see some real Mexico.

A sensible post.
Yep. They stick out like a sore thumb on this place.

I have no intention of reading it.
When an author passes off 'journalism' by Pamela Geller (look her up) as his own then you know you're in trouble.
Disgusting.

I'm about halfway through a really interesting book called "nothing to do with islam" - a very fair study into the qaran, how it is studied and interpreted by Muslims and why calling Islam a religion of peace is absurd. It is a really eye opening read for those who are not that well versed on the Islamic faith. This but in particular interested me:
"some readers may respond to the proof of Islam's deep revulsion towards unbelievers as highlighted in this chapter by stating that they have Muslim friends who treat them with respect and courtesy. This may indeed be the case, but the reason behind the friendship of these Muslim people is probably the fact that they choose to act on natural human instincts and ignore this aspect of Islamic teaching. However, the attitudes and actions of individual Muslims do not, for one moment, take away the existence of the verses listed above. They are there in the heart of the Qaran, ready to be discovered by any Muslim who may ask whether the way he or she thinks about non-Muslims and interacts with them is pleasing to Allah."
The author's (Peter Townsend) Twitter feed tells you everything you need to know about this book's contents. You are either extremely naive or shameless in suggesting that this an impartial and fair dissection of Islam.
Disgusting.

1 If VD leaves for Liverpool it would make the board look weak and wobbly with more U-Turns than Teresa May.
2 It would make LFC liars and cheats for reneging on their public promise not to pursue the player.
3 It would impact on our fans faith in the 'Southampton Way'. Questions would have to be asked, and answered honestly (no PR sham), about our ambition to bring CL football here.
4 The commercial value of the club would take a big hit if it was thought to be just a selling club with no interest in any trophies or European qualifcations.
in short, our club would be a laughing stock
A laughing stock in whose eyes? Just yours I imagine. Most of the country won't give a **** and of those that do the majority will think we've got loads of money for selling one of the best defenders in the world to one of the biggest clubs in the world.

Yet you all want the Hull manager who lost to a shocking Sunderland side who had just been relegated. This was a tricky game because many teams who have just been relegated tend to win their next games as they play with a bit more freedom.
It's impossible to win with some people.

Wasting your breath mate. This place is an echo chamber for tools these days. All the decent posters left ages ago.

If Puel gets sacked..how many of those below us do you really believe would have him as their manager?
Quite a few I imagine. They'd probably consider he'd done a half decent job when he'd inherited a depleted squad, had his best defender out for a third of a season, his best forward out for half a season and still managed to get to a Cup Final and a top 10 finish.
You carry on being a plum though.
-
Oh dear. You really are a very hateful person. Evidently, you also understand nothing about data and statistics - so you're stupid too. That's a pitiful combination.
-
Yes, that's the fella. Same one that has taken us into the final third of the season with an inadequate selection of CB's - one injury or suspension away from a real crisis - after starting the season light on goal scorers.
Like players, he is judged on his current and recent form rather than over his entire career or time with us.
Thank Christ you weren't in charge when MLT was out of form at various stages of his career. Clueless. Like 80% of the trolls on this board these days.
Still, as long as people are coughing up fivers who cares if this board has gone to ****.

All my life I've been waiting for that moment, a last minute winner, against one of the big boys, in a genuinely massive game. I'll never forget it as long as I live.
This.
I wasn't there in 76 or Fratton in 84. I was at Anfield though. I'll take that memory to my grave with me. I'm not sure that goal celebration will ever be topped.

My name's Micky, I'm a troll. Jesus, this place really is poison these days.
Is there the same short sighted bigotry going over at Paps place as well..?

No. You should come over. Only one troll over there and he just gets pitied.
-
That's pretty much the BBCs take on the match, to be fair.
But that can't be true because everybody in this echo chamber says we're utter **** and on the road to hell. Must be that post truth news again.
-
It saddens me
Wow, you really are as pathetic as you come across then.
-
Lewis is not ready, imo
How much have you seen him play?
-
But it really is bleak.
Case in point. Still in Europe. Quarter final of League Cup. But it's bleak. Get a grip.
-
Weird isn't it? Overall, we're not in a hugely dissimilar state of play to where we were around this time last season (i.e. middle third of Premier League, quarter final of league cup and in the europa league with a good chance of qualifying for the knock-out stages) yet we've somehow gone backwards in the eyes of some...
Yes, our performances of late have been somewhat lacking, but we nearly always go through phases like this, so where's the logic in automatically assuming we won't emerge from this frustrating period like we have done previously?
If come February/March we're out of all cup competitions and languishing near the foot of the premier league table then I'll happily join the doom and gloom club, but until then I'm maintaining a pragmatic stance.
People are generally ****ing idiots. Recent political shenanigans have shown that. There's no reason to think football fans are any different. Bunch of (in the main) utter fannies on here.
-
You tell us. You're the bigot without two brain cells to rub together. Let me guess....you can't be racist cos you've got black mates, right?
-
I'm in a minority on here that thought we alright and clearly aren't a million miles off being a good team again.
My few criticisms though are;
1) Not playing the through ball to our forwards early enough. The amount of times they were off side or had to keep checking back on their runs was ridiculous.
2) This system relies so much on having real quality full backs, providing width, getting crosses in and the defensive duties. Neither were bad yesterday, but still not at the level needed in this system.
3) Taking a pass too many and too long on the ball, getting caught in possession. Key part of the way we're set up and being calm and taking time on the ball is not necessarily a bad thing, but we cut it fine too often and got caught out a couple of times.
4) Booing from fans. Utter cretins.
5) How the f**k can a team time waste as much as Sunderland throughout the game and only 4mins are added on at the end.
Good post

Forest away in 1993 was another fucking freezing one. Lost 2-1. Very randomly someone had an air raid siren of some description in our end.
