  1. There seem to be two possibilities:

    1) it's long been noted that marking posts leaves two defenders wasted not marking or attacking the ball. The few times they clear it off the line don't make up for the increased number of times the opposition will win the header. Man mark properly and you out number the attackers and have a keeper to get the ball. Not perfect, but by far the best system and most accountable. The man on the post thing is just very lazy punditry.

    2) fans on football forums have noticed a brilliant defensive tactic that countless top level managers and coaches across the world have failed to spot.

I'm delighted with any praise but esp' from you!

  2. or....can he stand by a post for corners ....without bring told ?

We went 0-1 down to the smallest Sunderland player heading in with both posts undefended. We then failed to have anyone on the posts for every Sunderland corner after that. Perhaps it's the new way?

  3. A fair comment, Bear. Especially given Wigan probably brought around half the fans that Sunderland did. So we had around 1,000 fewer fans at St. Mary's yesterday than on opening day last season.

And I was one of them. For the past 10 years I have gone to see Saints with my grandson. This year he wants to go with his mates, it had to come. Just didn't fancy it a, on my jack jones, b, £37 to watch us against Sunderland. Hopefully I will get to a few during the season.

As for the attendance, it was good in my opinion considering things mentioned above.

  4. They're probably thinking: "We'll win plenty of games 3-0 this season with that level of domination and chances"

The point I was making, which you and others failed to grasp, was that many on here thought we only had to turn out and we had won. Get it now? We can have 70% of the play and 500 chances but if the ball does not end in the net.................
