  1. Apparently, David Moyes was interviewed for the Saints job around 2001, pre-Strachan, when he was at Preston. Lowe wanted him to join. Sticking point was that Moyes wanted to bring his back room staff with him and Lowe wanted to keep the existing coaching team. I would also guess that Moyes was smart enough to realise that working for Lowe would not be that great.

The last 10 years could have been a bit different. Apart from anything, we would have been spared a certain poster from bleating on about not getting Hoddle back in 2004,

  2. Ignore the above. It's not the Saints booking line. It's the account name that Stagecoach use for local bus season tickets. Although it is an account that is regularly used by fraudsters, in this case its legit.

Big ethical dilemma now as I have not actually paid for the previous two quarterly season tickets!

  3. He did absolutely nothing wrong all afternoon until that rush of blood.

Isn't that enough? Is it that hard to expect a player to keep his head and not get sent off?

  4. Is a liability quite frankly. Need to replace him in the summer. We have a premier league squad of about 12/13 but when one of them get's injured we're up ****s creek.

  5. Anderlecht received a ban from Europe in the nineties following evidence to prove that they had bribed the ref in their UEFA cup semi with Forest in 84. (just googled it)

But they had previous, and a thread on here some ago questioned why Saints had a goal disallowed in the first leg in 77.

  6. Simple question: if the 1976 cup win could be deleted from football records, but Saints get into Europe next season would you think thats a good sacrifice?

I would as the past is often forgotten anyway but the present is more relevant today and would be more of a talking point. At my work my peers don't know who won the cup in the 1970s but they do know who is where in the league in the present day.

Its a tough choice because silverware is important but I could do without our name etched on the cup if it meant European footy next season.

Daft question. I seem to remember that winning the cup qualified us for the Cup Winners Cup the following season, ending at the hands of the cheats from Anderlecht.

Even getting to the cup final in 2003 meant a game in Europe the following season. As Wigan will find out this season.

  7. Cardiff's promotion to the Premier League got me thinking, as we have never played them before in either the Premier League or old First Division.

At the risk of this turning into a Sporcle. How many different teams have we played in the top Division?

Having checked, it's more than I expected. It will go up next season with Cardiff's promotion and with Hull likely to go up.

And of these teams, which two have we never beaten in a top flight game? (one is obvious)

    I must get out more

  8. I wasn't born. I don't know the days of terracing in football or fences for supporters. For me football has always been relaxed with the occasional fight. I suppose it shows that out of all the tragedy, a glimmer of hope did surface. I would never condone the cover up though and wonder how, as a G8 country, we could have had a police force so corrupt as to try and blame fans for something that was never their fault. Yes, they reputation didn't help them but how can you judge someone by a stereotype?

  9. 'I have tipped Southampton to lose a few of their games recently, not because I have anything against them, but because I thought they would struggle under new manager Mauricio Pochettino.

They haven't. They have done a lot better than I expected and, by beating teams like Manchester City and Liverpool, they have surprised me a lot, and probably quite a few other people too. It is those wins that have seen them climb the table and away from relegation danger.

I'm tipping them to beat West Ham, not to silence the Saints fans who have given me stick on Twitter, but because I think they are playing well enough to break down a Hammers team that will probably see a point as a decent return as they edge towards safety.

    Lawro's prediction: 2-1'

Which probably means that we will lose.
