  1. sorry - meant to come back on with phone in hand to type a reply for you.

To turn off notifications is pretty straight forward. For SMS go into Messages app, hit menu, then settings. Uncheck Received Notification.

For email - go into the Gmail app, Hit Menu, > More> Settings and disable Email Notifications.

  2. looks like you are already signed up so invite won't go through tractorsaint.

Dropbox works fine on my HTC Desire. My coverage is great here on Three though - I get constant 5Mb Downloads.

  3. You need to disable notifications in both the stock sms and email apps. You can't stop them retrieving though. I actually switched back to the gmail app for email as the latest version does everything I need it to do. I can't root or use other roms as I have a work push email app on there along with smobile virus protection. They don't let us use those apps if we have rooted.

I use quite a few travel related apps - tripit, BA, AA apps. others I find useful are Dropbox (let me know if you want an invite for extra space!) Tweetdeck, Pixelpipe, Skype(the Three network version) and an app called lullaby that enables me to stream music from my home server to my phone wherever I am.

  4. You have High schools in the US that fill 20000 capacity stadiums. I think only 2 or 3 of the biggest stadiums are used by pro teams, the rest for college football. Michigan Stadium, home to the University of Michigan Wolverines has a record attendance of just over 113,000!

  5. If you're driving, go via San Antonio and Houston, and then across the bottom through the gulf states (that's the Gulf of Mexico, not the Gulf of Arabia).

In Dallas, you've got to go to the 6th Floor Museum in the Texas Book Repository which overlooks Deeley Plaza. You can't look out of the exact window where Lee Harvey Oswald took his pot shots as it's glassed off and preserved. But you can look out the window next to it. I guarantee when you look out that window, you will aim an imaginary rifle at the cross on the road where the first bullet allegedly struck. Work out for yourself if LHO could have got off three accurate shots in eight seconds from that range.

You've also got to go up and look at the Dallas Cowboys new stadium, just to see what an incredible, 21st century sporting venue looks like.

San Antonio has plenty to see, including the Alamo (disappointingly not as big as you would imagine, but still atmospheric), and the Riverwalk, which has got great eats. If you've been to Sea World in Florida, Sea World in San Antonio will be a disappointment. If it's hot, go to the Schlitterbahn waterpark in New Braunfels, the best water park in the world.

Houston isn't much unless you like indoor shopping and sprawling cities. But once across the border in Louisiana make sure you plug into the Cajun culture.

I'd give New Orleans a big miss unless you specifically want to go there.

The best sights of Louisiana are in the back country, in the bayous. You can do all sorts of swamp tours, but if you like your music check out the Zydeco and food at these places: Mulates at Breaux Bridge, and Pat's Fisherman's Wharf.

Biloxi, Mississippi has some big casino hotels that were up and running pretty quickly after Katrina. For a spot of luxury, try the Beau Rivage.

Last time we passed through, we stayed here: http://www.maisondmemoire.com/ Absolutely fantastic place, and the first time I have had muffins with scallions (spring onions) in them.

Cheers for that - we are visiting relatives in Dallas, then heading to Florida on AA

  6. I hope to go to Texas in September to write a book on a high school football team, leaving in December (assuming they make the State playoffs), return to the UK for Xmas and then off to Chiang Mai, Thailand early 2012 for my long anticipated hair transplant and period of reflection whilst I plot my next move.

    Funds pending, of course.

Which High School? My cousin teaches at one of the top High Schools in Dallas - got an 8000 capacity American Football stadium - at a High School!!

  7. The Sennheiser are very good - until they get washed as Baj says! Mine went through the washing machine and I have replaced them with a pair of Goldring GX200. They come with comply tips(and 3 sizes of normal tips) which are like the foam earplugs you get on planes. These are ideal as they expand into your ear canal so get a very snug fit.

  8. Best phone deal imo is the Orange San Francisco for £ 99 on payg. An Android phone with a brilliant screen that can be unlocked for less than a quid.

Stick a Gigggaff sim in it and you got a cracking phone and tariff with no contract or tie in period.

it can be unlocked for free! Get it through a link from Quidco and there is cashback available too usually. Got it for my daughter for £99, less £10 discount from Orange, and £18 cashback. Unlocked it using a link from modaco.com and she is happily using it on 3. Decent phone for the price. Don't know how they managed to get that screen in the phone so cheaply. Its a better screen than the HTC Wildfire my wife has.

  9. If you want to go down the usenet route but need simplicityI would go and download and install SABNzbd from here. SABNzbd runs as a service on your PC and will deal with most issues associated with usenet downloads such as missing/corrupt files. You just download and open the nzb file and SABNzbd kicks in and handles the file download, extract, and repair if required. I use it along with SickBeard to automate my US TV show torrents. The latest episodes are sitting on my server waiting for me every morning.
