  1. If we have a 5 year plan that is to be implemented, then we do need some more players in various areas. IMO the squad is weaker than it was at the end of last season and has not been truly addressed in the vital areas.
I disagreed with Alpine Saint on that point before the season started but having seen our play against Plymouth and Bournemouth I have changed my mind and agree with the statement highlighted in bold.
  2. Alpine Saint makes some good points.

I too am worried about the lack of a "box to box" midfielder gereral, a "winger" to give competition to Lallana & Puncheon, particularly the latter and a cover "centre forward" Without I suspect we will struggle to get out of this division.

Loan players are not the preferred option as has been shown in the past. Either they are not good enough or they are not available after their loan period.

There was rumour that Pardew did not get on with Waigo (probably a communication issue) but Pardew is not the only one making decisions on transfers so either Waigo did not want to come or the club felt he was not the answer.

Having said the above, we are not likely to throw money at a player (and nor should we) We do not want overpaid mercenaries. We want players who want to play for the club for what it is and what, with their help, it can become. If we cannot get the right players on permanent deals then loans may be the short term answer. That will not likely happen until after the transfer window closes.

Getting promotion this season is the priority. We must keep up the interest of our "new" benifactors. They must be made to feel that continuing the late Marcus's dream will result in fulfilment.

  3. Has been offered a 1 year contract with Hampshire for next season.

"I just want to keep playing cricket for as long as I’m physically OK and I make a difference. I don’t want to be picked in a side just because of what I’ve done in the past; I want to be picked in a side because I make a difference. I believe I can still do that. If I ever get to the position where I feel can’t it’ll be time for some of those youngsters to take the ball and have a good time. It’s been a great career. So I’m going to take some time, I’m going to think about it and I’m sure I’ll make the right decision for myself and for Hampshire as well. I’ll make a decision before the end of the season, and I’m pretty sure it’ll be a positive one!"
  4. Was he with Storrie, or was he chasing him for his money? :)
Did not come with him and in a different part of the ground although thay may have come together at one point in the day. Terry is Pompey through and through. Not even his loss of money has curbed his enthusiasm for them. Terry knows I am a Saints season ticket holder. We tend to take the P out of each other but always light hearted. I know many other good Pompey season ticket holders. We enjoy the banter.
  5. Chanria is sorting out the purchase contract and intends to sell on as soon as possible. There is a potential buyer but Chanria has just upped the purchase price substantially according to Peter Storrie when I spoke to him last night. Long way to run in this saga yet :)

  6. No panic, the 1st run would have counted but scores and wickets lost would then have been equal so who knows how they decide it then ! I care not now :D

Fully justified the decision to not pick KP even though some people thought we needed him with so many players out, I said we didn't and the young guys delivered, Corky bowled superly, Razzaq scored some vital runs and it was truly an 11 man effort rather than 10 men plus one prima donna. Superb though my nerves are still in shreds. What a transformation.

It goes back to scores after the power play (6 overs) Hants were in front on that as well. We and the team knew that the 1 run was enough although Christian looked like he did not :)
  7. Let us not get too excited. Saints were poor in the first half and only marginally better in the second until we scored. Great goal from Lallana.

Wotton offers nothing. Every time he got the ball all he wanted to do was get rid of it backwards as quickly as possible. If he is our midfield cover we are in trouble!

Dickson had a poor first half. Harding as his replacement was much better.

Davis just kicks the ball forward and rarely does a Saints player get first or second ball. He needs to distribute so we can build from the back. Bournemouth keeper was not much better.

Seaborne was ok. Fonte was his usual polished self.

    Barnard had a poor game

Oxy-Chamberlain was poor and no where near ready for the first team. Good goal and I was pleased for him but watched his positioning, lack of movement etc. Still he is only 16 and time for him to improve.

2-0 was about right but we are far from being a promotion challenging side on this performance.

  8. Put out the strongest team available. No need to rest anyone (unless carrying an injury). This is only the 2nd competative match of the season and there is plenty of time to recover for Saturday. We are not prioritising this competition according to Pardew on Solent. Saints are prioritising cup competitions they can win, JPT I assume. However, the loss on Saturday has left him with a delemma. I suspect he will use this to condition the strongest first team.

  9. Correct. I'd have no issue with the booking tax if it was to cover the cost of P+P, but £3 is an outrageous amount to charge to post out a letter.
It is beginning to be the norm.

I went on the Warwickshire CCC site to book a ticket for Warwick v Hants T20 QF a few weeks back. Cost of ticket in advance £15 - £20 on the day. Booked a ticket and found £1 booking charge. Only two alternatives for delivery - ETicket or post to home. Fee to sent me an email with Eticket for me to print £2 or £2.50 to post it. Thought cheaper than on the day only to find they changed their policy on the day and were selling for £15.

It is not just Saints. It is the leisure industry in general.

  10. Weston....are there many more youngsters about to come through as good as those mentioned above?

Since we turned to youth I think we have blossomed rather than rely on the overseas players.

Mackenzie after a slow start has added valuable runs, Christian for me is just OK nothing special.

It was good to see Simon Jones bowl today, I wouldn't call his run up and action smooth but he bowled at a fair pace today.

Not heard of any more other than Adam Rouse WicketKeeper who has taken Bates place in England Under 19's. Tahir will be back as our oversea's player. Whilst that may restrict Briggs appearances Tahir is a match winner and you need those in the side if you are to win anything.

McKenzie has been a big plus and at the moment it looks like he might be back next year but nothing concrete yet.

  11. Good professional win. Never really looked in doubt.

On to Somerset tomorrow with Ervine back in the side. I expect the same side that finished against Durham in the Championship game.

Durham are off to Old Trafford. Thorp is definately out for them. Harmison twisted his ankle. Likely to be fit for them if he feels like it.

  12. Disappointing result.

We started bright, the pace of the game was good and we created chances from wide. Unfortunately they fell to the head of Hammond who realy should know how to head a goal but always seems to mess it up. A couple of free kick positions would have also been ideal for Lambert and it does worry me that we are going to have to rely on him so much.

Apart from Lallana on the bench (and he had not kicked a ball in anger since Southend game last season) there was nothing there that could change the game for us like last season. Another worrying factor.

We were better than Plymouth over the whole 90 minutes but conceded a silly goal. More worrying, we did not look like we would score, again unlike last season.

We are only one match in and the transfer window is still open but at the moment I cannot see us being more than a top 8 side, not top 2 as we all hoped.

I hope I am wrong but we need a good replacement for Hammond (Hammond is only a cover player imo) cover for Lambert, an impact player to bring on to change the game and a pacy wide player.

  13. Let me first confirm this was a cracker of a wicket. 4 centuries and a 99 is proof of that.

Mustard declaring last night when he did was a very positive decision to gain a result. They, like us, are in the relegation group. They are below us although they do have a game in hand.

Now the problem for Hampshire....How many runs should they score and how many overs should they leave? One important consideration was not losing wickets early on this morning and passing the initiative to Durham. It had to be a slow and steady start building momentum as the moning went on. Forget the weather predictions, that could not come into the equasion.

One of the difficulties was that on the first day in the mid session Hampshire scored 199-0 at well over 6 runs an over. On the third day Durham scored 174-2 in the same session again over 6 runs an over. On that basis Hampshire had to set a target of over 6 an over. That would mean circa 300 in about 45 overs. With the wicket not having deteriorated they were long odds on a win. Durham might have smashed it around and won. It they lost early wickets they could block out as the wicket was doing nothing. Hampshire could not really win and Mustard knew that at the declaration.

As it turned out the weather won but don't think the players were unaware of their responsibilities to the fans who turned out. They want to win for the supporters as much as we want them to but that will have to be another day.

Today was not about negativity but reality.

As for the wicket! Well done to the groundsman. The umpires were very complimentary. As good as anything they have stood on this season.

  14. Do people who get offended by other, mostly random people not just need to lighten up a bit?

Weston's 'i'll never post any info i have again' smacked of someone wanting everyone to beg him to continue, for example

Far from it. Not only will I stick to it but I also disabled my PM at the same time today if you noticed.
  15. I would have thought both sides will have been delighted they have the experienced MannJ on the bench. Don't automatically expect a decision tomorrow. I suspect this will go into the second allocated day.

  16. Let me make it clear, I have not had any abuse posted about me of late. It was a general comment but I have decided not to share any information I might pick up from various sources. as a result of abuse to some others.

  17. Oh well, could be that the comments on this thread may finally drive away many more posters, including Duncan, who might have had something to offer.

I for one will no longer share any information I might have on here.

I know it is summer and the season has not yet started but the childish attitute/postings of some and the way they have "soiled" the main forum has caused a marked deterioration of late and many good posters with varying opinions are reluctant to add thie views.

  18. I have been there for all 4 days. Lancashire were frightened of losing from the start.

One regular Lancashire supporter yesterday said I was lucky as I only had to endure a Lancashire game onnce a season. They had to suffer them all season.

Spoke to one of Lancashires prominent committee members this afternoon. She said Lancs were frightened of losing from day 1. They were very negative.

Poor advert for the 4 day game when they were batting. However much of it was down to some accurate bowling from Hants even if, on a flatish wicket on the last day they lacked to penetration required.

  19. Seems many have interpreted from FF's snippet that it is Cortese who will get rid of Pardew. Another interpretation could be that Pardew will walk into another job rather than continue his association with Cortese. I suspect the "source" may mean this as I heard similar at the end of last season. Opinion was that if a Championship club came in for Pardew he would likely be off without much thought. Likewise Cortese was not likely to stand in his way.

Word on the street also is that Saints are trying to get Antonio but are not prepared to pay what Reading want for him at present.

  20. AA's now confusing me, I had to listen to his comments twice to make sure.

I thought the image rights issue was quite simple -

that Pompey paid a proportion of wages as a tax-free bonus under the guise of image rights, yet he is banging on about players claiming these amounts because a certain proportion of their income is earned abroad as they are so famous (?) and can thus be paid into offshore accounts bypassing UK taxation - he is saying that their work for Portsmouth is partly international.

When did it become an international issue?

Employed by a UK company to work in the UK - but with wages paid into offshore accounts tax free?

And that's before you start looking at those accounts and seeing where it goes after that.

Imagine the situation - 'you want £40K a week, tell you what, we'll give you £70K a week and you move £20K into this other account....'

But that's another issue still to be dealt with......

I also think his figures are up the spout, a back of the envelope guess at three seasons of image rights payments at 10-15% of the wages comes out much closer to HMRC's estimate of £13M than his of £5M.

He's a muddled boy, if he were my witness I wouldn't let him near a courtroom.

Agree. I had an expert witness once who produced a brilliant report going against the thoughts of one of the best paraplegic experts in the country. Got him in conference and straight away his answers to questions were muddled. We dropped him and agreed the other sides evidence on that point. Never let a muddler near a court room
  21. Good post in the news from kski in London

PCFC to not have to enter or exit CVA by the start of the season – they have 12 months from entering the CVA. The points deduction is determined by the exit vehicle (agreed or extraordinary CVA) not by the timescale.

The CVAs being challenged at the High Court. The High Courts decision can be taken to the Court of Appeal by either side.

The court can imply terms on the CVA, or direct AA to form a new CVA.

HMRC are looking for guidance on voting issues. AA by law has to act in the interests of all creditors (HMRC included), and HMRC contest he has disadvantaged them by reducing their claim. Interestingly the actual tax liability will only be known when the CVA is agreed and the Admin Event occurs. The HMRC have a special team called Combined voluntary arrangement service – so one would imagine they are accurate to 10%?

The Inclusion of “secured” debt football creditors is a legal minefield covering liens, securities and trusts, and other issues. But it seems odd that creditor A who will receive 100% under FC rules gets to vote on a proposal affecting creditor B who will receive 20% over 4 years.

Re Image rights – The HMRC are not choosing to contest the concept of Image rights in this case. They are claiming that the 26% of wages diverted to IR payments for PCFC players in the last three years does not match the accrued Income generated by Image rights for PCFC. (A tax dodge) Bearing in mind this year Man U have set aside £5.5m on IR tax provisions. In fy 09 PCFC paid £17m in IR, generating a tax liability at 40% of £6.8M. HMRC will argue that PCFC turnover does not match Man U and the IR payments for the squads cannot be said to be worth similar amounts. I think they have a good point that is difficult to defend
