dronskisaint Posted 15 December, 2010 Share Posted 15 December, 2010 The below pasted from an article on longevity & 'runs' in various sports. Terry Paine's is the only football related one. '2. Terry Paine: Seven years without missing a match for Southampton The England winger spent 18 years with Southampton, making 713 appearances and scoring 160 goals. After leaving the Saints he moved on to play for Hereford, clocking up 819 league appearances in his career. During that time he played for England 19 times (scoring seven goals) and was part of the World Cup squad in 1966. Yet his most amazing achievement is down to his remarkable fitness: during his time with Southampton Paine once went seven seasons without missing a single match. In an era when men were hard and tackles were harder, it was a quite incredible feat for an attacking player to go so long unscathed' When men were men....and he had to train against Big Jake Mc Grath, Dennis Hollywood, Brian O'Neill etc! Teddy Nutkins Posted 15 December, 2010 Share Posted 15 December, 2010 Terry was a survivor on the pitch, and he dished out quite a bit of the rough stuff.I guess it was a protective instinct but he would kick you before you kicked him, which is why he went so long without missing a game through injury. He was well known in the game as being "dirty", and at times not subtle, but a great player, and a great character............Elvis lives!!!!!! toofarnorth Posted 15 December, 2010 Share Posted 15 December, 2010 Not only the lack of injuries but also suspensions. Even the most mild mannered players pick up bookings and reds for seemingly innocuous challenges these days.
saintoli Posted 15 December, 2010 Share Posted 15 December, 2010 It always ****es me off that he doesn't get enough recognition from his home city. It's not like Winchester has a load of world cup winners knocking about. Wish there were more like him, skillful, tough and able to put a ball anywhere he wanted. Proper Saints (and Winch!) LEGEND!
