iPhone made random call

My girlfriend and I were just sat watching tv when her phone lit up in front of us. When she picked it up to look at it, it was calling a random number. She cancelled the call before it connected.

 

After searching the start of the number on Google, it's a premium rate line ($17 per minute).

 

I've never know this sort of thing happening before. My guess is there was some kind of hack involved. How did this happen? Is there a way to prevent it happening again?

 

Anybody seen or heard of this happening?

There must be something installed on it. Try double-pressing the Home button and see what programs are running.
