True, but the welfare system needs a proper look at anyway.

The missus and I would actually be better off if we didn't live together, and not just financially. She's after going back to work. There are numerous schemes available, but because she has stayed at home looking after the kids on my income (and didn't sign on), she's entitled to feck all.

The benefits system is theoretically there for a very good reason - to cover citizens who are done over by the consequences of capitalism. If someone has paid in to the system when working, they should be entitled to support when things are not so good.

The problem is that people abuse any system you put in front of them.

And how do you propose the carer is paid?

Simple solution: give generous benefits for 18 months (based on say 80% of your last wage), then cut them to below the current minimum afterwards. One exceptions being single parents, and the genuinely disabled. After 18 months, the right to get the generous level of dole needs to be earnt back by paying tax.

Everyone wins.
