  1. Without jumping on a bandwagon I think England have messed up dropping Compton and moving Root up. Today was the perfect example of how in test cricket you see off the new ball and then bed in. Root >>Bairstow and would have been a good bet to get runs at 6. With Cook out of form at just the wrong time and Bairstow having glaring technical deficiencies you need a Compton type up top

But Flower and team England won't change it, too stubborn

  2. I love Cork as much as everyone else but Wanyama is a better player and will start ahead of him if we play the sane formation as last year

Where he will add more solidity is those games like Stoke away where we have a lead but get deeper and deeper and overrun in the last 30 mins. I can also see Cork coming on in those situations to give a midfield 3

  3. Who next for us then? And what more do we need?

Winger (Stoch) and striker (Damiao/Osvaldo) the priorities for me. Being greedy, I wouldn't say no to another quality CB as an upgrade on 1 of Fonte/Jos and some better cover at left & right backs.

Do we consider the Banega deal to be off now we've signed Wanyama?

I hope Banega isn't off, he's a tremendous player, will upgrade us hugely - he's that good

  4. To be fair to Cortese he can only do so much, it's up to a player and his agent if they want to come and that's still a hard sell given were a bottom tier PL side

I do wonder if/why we're not in for lower tier players as well though, or if all our eggs are in the 'big signing' bracket. Hopefully we're doing both and building a better squad

  5. After watching U20 I cant see that Bueno would be a target right now. Not in any way a finished product and wouldn´t come close to starting XI.

Indeed, everyone saying we need to buy players to improve the team, can't see this kid would even get in the first team

  6. IF

We are to progress and improve then the scouting staff should be looking to buy players that are BETTER than Shaw, Cork, Morgan, SRL etc, ie players that make our EXISTING team the squad back up.

We bought squad quality players once before (Telfer, Delap et al) and while it got us into the top 10 for a season it left us with a load of dross when we needed more quality.

Oh and that means you need a plan because you cannot do that in one transfer window.

I know what you mean but we don't have the money to spend the millions that would entail. Just buying 3 or 4 better than what we have will cost £30-40m as we've seen with the 12m for Wanyama, 17m for Osvaldo, 20m for Damiao etc.

So some of these funds could be spent upgrading the second tier players like Fox who have to play because Shaw is 17-18 and wont last a season. No point having Damiao up front when Fox is costing you goals at the back because he's nowhere near good enough
