  1. Read this last night, very good. The bit that said we lost 4-1 to Palace on the opening day of 07/08 had me thinking "did that really happen?" I honestly don't remember that game.

I remember it....vividly. I don't go to that many games per season, but that year I decided to go on the opening day full of optimism. What followed was without a doubt the worst I have ever seen us play, and Bennett's debut, was worse still. For me, even though we didn't actually go down that season, that was arguably the lowest I've ever felt as a Saints fan (with regards to on-field matters anyway). Even though I was in denial at the time, I somehow knew we had further to sink, before we were ever going to rise again.

  2. Thanks Bridgey, it's brings it all home.

I had to miss this because I was attending the Geotechnical Engineering Awards, for which we won the Sustainability Awards, I met Robert Llewellyn, of Red Dwarf and scrap heap challenge fame, and did get into the acceptence speach that my boss looks like Sam Allerdice, he supports West Ham, and SAINTS are going up.

It's nice to see the players do enjoy life at the club, do seem to like Adkins, and are kean next season to make their mark. Loverly night out and I would have loved to be there.

Is this your subtle was of telling SWF that you won an award?

  3. Seeing as it's FA Cup final day (yeah, I only just realised this morning too!), what are your favourite Saints-related FA Cup memories?

Obviously, pretty much everyone is going to refer to either '76 or '03 finals, so for the purposes of this thread we will assume these 2 matches don't count. So, what are your faviourite FA Cup non-final memories?

For me it has to be Crouch's last minute penalty v Pompey.

  4. Can't decide between:

Billy's second goal v Pompey. I think the ref only talked to the lino for about 20 seconds, but it felt like about an 20 minutes. Went a little bit mental when it was given. Shame about what happened 3 minutes later.

The last 5 minutes away v Barnsley. 1-0 up but toying with Barnsley playing keep-ball.

Jos scoring v Hull(?) and just celebrating standing still in the goal, with hands in the air.

And, seeing as it hasn't cost us promotion and I can laugh about it, the whole 90 minutes of Bart v Blackpool.

  5. The spelling is woeful.

I did like this bit of the article though. PinkScarf and her girls must be horrible if even Jos snubbed them.

"I am the like the guy next door and it is annoying for my Mrs, but I stand and talk to everyone and chat about whatever they want - that is the way I am."

  6. I feel sorry for him. I can't blame him taking the job as it is the pinnacle of an English manager's career. He seems a genuine, traditional chap who is clearly proud to be given the chance.

But the subdued media reaction to his appointment is worrying. No fanfare, no saviour, it's like they are setting him up for the fall.

Surely its the complete oppostie. Bigging him up and saying he'll be the saviour would be setting him up for a fall. I think this is the perfect appointment for England, compared to the likes of Sven, McLaren or Capello. For years I've been wanting England to go into a major tournment without masses of media hype about winning it. Being underdogs with a passionate english manager has every chance of being a success.

For the record, I think with Hodson as manager we'll get to the semis of Euro 2012.

  7. One good thing about the Premier League is that we're allowed 7 subs on the bench. Will hopefully allow us to give a few youngsters a bit of a match experience if we ever happen to be crusiing a game. In the Championship, where it felt like everygame was important, with 5 subs unfortunately there just wasn't space for someone unproven.

No doubt a few youngsters will go on loan hopefull to the Championship/League 1 too.

  9. There is only two users that have a bad word to say about the pompey fans. Among the others comments are "best fans in championship".

Just show me one, just one, from anyone not connected with your club , a posting on a message board, a mad rambling of an old woman, anyone, just one person saying that you are the best fans in the league/england/world.

    Go on just one.

    From a Coventry messageboard:

If only the Beeb gave us air time it wouldn't take others to spell it out for them. Won't forget all the Saints fans coming up to shake my hand and wish us well from leaving the stadium to being on the train back. Brilliant group who put their Fratton neighbours to shame.

Just to clarify, according to Pompey fans logic, anything said by a few people on any random opposing teams online messageboard, is 100%, conclusively true, right? Suppose it doesn't actually say we're the best in the world. But it says we're better than Pompey. WOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOO. There's nothing more to settle. Saints fans have won every possible argument there is to win!

  10. Always nice to hear I suppose. It'd be easy to forget where we were just a few years ago, but it seems a lot of us still remember and have sympathy for Coventry. Here's a selection of posts from their messageboard.

What fantastic support we have, and what fantastic supporters the saints have.

It was great seeing fellow football fans helping each other when they unveiled the sisu out flag.

I was on one of the coaches and pretty much every Southampton fan that passed by applauded us, it was a fantastic sight to see, and I'd like to wish them luck in the premier league.

I've been around half the away games and all the home games this year, and I'd say it has been the most passionate I have seen the fans in the 16 years of supporting the club. At away games such as leeds away we did not stop singing throughout.

Went through a period wishing ill on you purely because Strachan was managing you but today has really cemented a warm feeling between Cov and Saints that will last .

Have to agree here! I've met loads of Saints fans while I've been down here and every one of them a real fan and supporter of both their club and the game itself. I feel closer to Southampton FC more than any other club now (obviously after CCFC!), as I have the utmost respect for true fans of the game. What I've read on some of the posts on here today just shows me that I think what joemercersaces says will come true. Cov and Southampton will forever be a lot closer as clubs and supporters, even though, for now, we are two leagues apart. Congrats on their promotion.

  11. 4-1 win over Torquay (our first win under the lights this season. Nice goal for Forte to start his account for the season).

2-1 loss to Crystal Palace (we could have gone on to play the mighty Man Yoo if we had won)

2-1 away to Coventry (showing the FA cup still has a bit of magic!)

  12. from KUMB:

"Aceface wrote:Several posters on Saintsweb brilliantly suggesting Chelsea's David & Goliath victory last night was the perfect inspiration for them to get over the line on Saturday.

It's COVENTRY who are Chelsea in this comparison you bellends. The relegated side playing away at the team with the best home record who are one victory away from glory. YOU are Barcelona."

Careful what you post, those bellends have no idea of intended context!! (Insert facepalm here)

What, because we're going to finish 2nd in the league? LOL!

    ZING!

  13. Unless I'm much mistaken the recession is still on, people are still skint, petrol prices are still high, the game is on telly, there is a still a booking fee, public transport is still crap and people still have birthdays and their birds ordering them about. They are all excuses I've heard as to why people can't make it this season. All of a sudden this doesn't seem to be the case, funny that.

Are you really struggling to understand why some people, who normally only go to a few games a season, are making a special effort to be at this game? Or is this just one of those "look at me, I'm Turkish and I'm being funny and controversial" jokes?
