Seriously, I doubt any of the players brought into that plan. A few gullible fans may have, but the players know the chances of is getting to the Premier League in two years is very low. Team spirit is all fine and well, but if a Premier club offers to double your wages then it isn't a hard decision to make. As soon as one player has his head turned and looks to pastures greener it can have a chain reaction on the other players. The house of cards can quickly fall. He doesn't have a great choice. It was obvious that AOC was off straight after the first interview from Adkins, where he failed to state that Alex was going to be staying. So what if Cortese stated he wouldn't be sold in December? Cortese has no effective power to keep any want away player at the club. To do so would be completely counter-productive. The player would get narky, his performances would drop and his negativity would infect the other players. This is why Man Utd couldn't keep hold of Ronaldo, why Sunderland couldn't keep Bent and why dozens and dozens of clubs are forced to sell players their managers would prefer to retain. Why is any of this a surprise to you?

Sunderland (much bigger than us) couldn't even hang on to Bent (and Villa are smaller than Arsenal). Notice he didn't say "Alex is not being sold to Arsenal". Not a difficult phrase to come out with, and he walked all around the subject without actually denying it is going on.

Those Cortese comments were before all this speculation blew up. Adkins has not ruled out selling AOC. Hope this helps.
