  1. Guess I meant with respect to how they feel they're living in the shadow of Japan and China - that no matter how far they've come economically, they're not given their due which grates existentially. I've also had a tough time working with some South Koreans. Worked on a project for the World Bank (2011), funded by the KDI. It was very difficult to convince them that despite their funding, the project was not a branding exercise for the country as poster child for the rest of the developing world. Worse this was not just opportunism: they genuinely seemed to believe their own hype.

Bit late to the party here, but I'd disagree with the shadow comment. Korea has a stellar reputation in Asia despite still being relatively unknown in the West. Koreans are proud of the country's rapid economic development (something even China has tried to learn from), while K-pop etc has permeated other Asian countries in the same way that American pop music has the rest of the world.

I've not ever come across a sense that Koreans feel they're living in the shadow of China or Japan, quite the opposite in fact. There could be an argument that some feel in the shadow of the U.S., but that's a different debate altogether.

  2. No idea!! If it was my choice i'd go with Tuchel but it sounds like that's dead in the water, i'm sure there are others too but that's the ones i heard of for certain. We were pretty quick to dismiss Silva as a choice which makes me think we didn't see in him what we wanted. There's been lots of chatter about a manager that can keep players who want away as they'd want to play for him. But that could just be chatter.

    Which manager would that be?

  3. I've no idea if we should appoint Silva or not, but I do think it's odd to see the number of posters who seem so clued up on his management ability. How many of us watch Hull on a regular basis?

When Spurs wanted MP I popped over to their message boards, and the majority of the comments were hilariously off-the-mark (unproven, not a great style of footy etc. etc.) and, even though I didn't want them to take him, it annoyed me that the fans could be so ignorant of how good a manager he actually was. I would wager that any Hull fan reading this thread can empathise with the sentiment.

Maybe Silva isn't the right man for the job, maybe Puel won't even be replaced, but let's not pretend we actually have much of a clue of how good Silva is- a lot more goes into management than the 5 mins of highlights we see on a Saturday evening.

  4. There is a You Tube video of the 1997 Dispatches Channel 4 programme, which is openly available there - actually goes through Bennell, and also interviews an ex-Saints player regarding a person, who I think we're all talking about. It's short but about 35mins in.

Not going to link to it here, but I can't believe that no-one in the local media is following it up. I guess for legal reasons.

Featuring a young Les Reed talking about introducing a "code of conduct" at Charlton!!!

  5. Style of football is still a concern though isn't it?

Not attacking you, but I've seen a couple of posts using style of football against AVB, but none have applied the same logic to FDB. A dutch poster on here claimed he played dull football, and it seems they aren't the only one...

    https://m.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/4iyiaa/frank_de_boer_leaves_ajaxdays_after_his_agent/

I just don't see how FDB would be a continuation of our style. I can't remember many occasions during the last five years when our play would have been described as dull but effective.

I'm not defending AVB particularly, but let's at least apply the same rules to both him and FDB.

  6. Replace the man who in his disastrous spell in charge at Charlton was voted the worst manager in the history of the Premier League with somebody who gets on with players and managers and inspires loyalty like Le Tissier.

Maybe then we'd have players staying long enough for a testimonial, or join the u21 coaching staff after they've retired.

  7. Successful enough in Russia, winning the league and Cup and okay in the Champions League. He's won the Europa League, and did excellently at Spurs and was a gnats away from finishing fourth. More points than Poch got.

His availability - he's a free agent - as much as his track record means he is a compelling candidate.

Although you can see him here, can't you? He's like Pochettino and Pardew blended into one Portuguese peacock - half footballing scholar half preening egotist.

Totally agree. I don't know enough about Russian football, but considering both Emery and Yakin flopped at Spartak Moscow, maybe AVB did a better job at Zenit than he is credited with.

  8. Oh God, you're back again...

Hey leave him alone, we all have a right to an opinion! Comments like that drag this place down, it was much better in the good old days.

  9. IMHO Koeman is leaving for ONE reason

    AMBITION

He said recently that he would be having talks with the Owners, to see if their Ambitions Matched his

Obviously, they don't, so he's going to go to a BIGGER Club, who DO have Ambition

I don't blame him one bit, I blame the Owners

    Shame on them

    Oh God, you're back again...

  10. http://www.portsmouth.co.uk/sport/football/pompey/catlin-transfer-listed-trio-may-still-have-pompey-future-1-7406575?

I guess this means that they're not really good enough even for Pompey, but no-one else wants to pay them the wages they're currently on, still less a transfer fee, (they probably haven't had a single inquiry) so the blue few are stuck with them.

Great way to motivate your players.

Judging by Cook's ability to spot talent...

‘It may not necessarily be the end of them and Paul will use an example of Sam Hird at Chesterfield.

‘He transfer-listed him, but didn’t leave the club and ended up becoming a regular, this year named as their player of the season.

‘John-Joe O’Toole at Northampton was the same. He was transfer-listed last summer and look at the season he had.

Maybe the transfer-listed trio are too good for Pompey?

  11. Honestly, I wonder why we have a forum if every time someone offers an opinion that is not flavour of the month it is firmly stuffed back down the throat? Please read carefully, I have not criticised Les, rather said "he is ok and a valuable asset" but not the hero people are trying to make out here - mostly the same people who have vilified him a lot more at various times. No wonder the Brexit debate is such a mess if we can't even proffer a simple view on a footballing director's role! Let's see what the view is when we sell off the next crop of best players.

The 'major issues' that you mention- loans, developing youth- are both the same one issue and, in the grand scheme of things, not that major.

Your logic that he can't be any good because he was once employed in a more prestigious role is obviously flawed if you spend a bit of time thinking about it. Happy to suggest why if you disagree.

You're right, it's a forum. You stated your opinion, somebody else disagrees. Seems pretty standard to me, no idea how that related to Brexit.

  12. Meh! Not too sure myself, and yes I might be completely wrong. I just think LR is average and fortunate to be in the right place at the right time. He has changed his stance on major issues too many times for me (e.g. loans, developing youth) to believe he has a core belief, rather than “go with the flow”.

As I said, I think he is ok and a valuable asset, but far from the messiah many would have us believe. Let’s face it, how do you go from being an England / FA supremo to joining a lowly SFC club (when he first joined SFC) if he was “Le God” 2nd ?

Les is not the force behind our success, rather he helps in some manner and of course talks a good story!

    Complete non sequitur.
