Hello!
After following this forum for a number of years I've finally decided to bite the bullet and sign up. First post, so go easy on me!
I've been driven to do so by recent events and can honestly say that my general feelings toward the whole situation are very similar to Hufftons. I'm embarrassed to say that I was actually in a state of Shock when Nigel was dismissed and was previously unaware that Saints and football meant that much to me. Don't get me wrong, I love it all as much as the next supporter but it is after all, a hobby. As a number of people have said on here already, I think that this is down to the fact that Nigel seemed like a genuinely nice bloke and had been the face to our revival as a club on the pitch. Since league 1 we have all been on this journey together and grown along the way. I thought we had finally found our long term manager and I had not been so pleased with our man at the helm since Gordon Strachan. I was livid with Cortese, the club and Italians in general.
It felt like we were all 'part' of the club for a change with players like Lallana, Lambert, Jose, Kelvin and others seemingly actually possessing loyalty. We had a team, not just a rabble of individuals. I appreciate that there are still here and that we still have that team, but without their leader what will happen? I don't want to support a team like Man City. I don't want overpaid pretty boys playing for us. They weren't the best players ever.... but I grew up watching and worshiping players like Chrisy Marsden, Fabrice Fernandes and Marian Parhars. Loved every minute of it.
I forget who it was but someone on here stated that it appeared we were part of the club instead of just customers and I couldn't have agreed more. I'm not so sure anymore.
I was ashamed to be a Saints fan for the first time in my life. We had no reason to dismiss him and I truly believe this will come back to haunt us. If we go down, what will happen? There will be a huge backlash from a large majority of fans and it will be remembered for years to go as one of the most idiotic decisions in recent years.
A few days on and I've calmed down a bit, however I still don't see the logic in any of it. People have been saying that Nigel had done all he could for us, he'd taken us as far as he could. On what basis? He is young and obviously improving with each new experience. How can anyone even suggest that he has reached his peak? He was an unproven new manager in the premier league with a good knowledge of English football, and we have chucked him out for what I can only see as a less qualified replacement. I'll always support Saints (despite an hour long rant to a friend on Saturday declaring my new allegiance to AFC Wimbledon - my new local team) and I really do wish Mauricio Pochettino the best of luck. He's innocent until proven guilty in my eyes and if the club thinks he has the potential then so be it.
Anyway, I realize that most of this has been said already but everyone I know is sick of hearing about this so now its your turn
Cheers
