To round off a great day,we had 20K and the skates had 10K.

At home on the same day and again we make them look naff.

They always make out they are the big club but we all know the truth.

RED ARMY!!

Maybe but this time last year in our hour of need we didn't exactly pack em in until it was to late. Pompey fans are simply voting with their feet and protesting and what does that remind you off? Don't understand the need to gloat when we acted no differently.

Incorrect. We did get higher attendances towards the end of last year but people thought (correctly) that any extra finance was basically putting money in the pockets of the administrator. Look at the terrible idea that was that legends match. It was organised on behalf of the fans but everyone knew that it was a terrible idea and a drop in the ocean and thus they were not prepared to waste their money. The situations are completely different.

I don't deny we have a larger support base but last season our attendances noticeably dropped in reaction to the financial / decision making situation at the club. I agree the details of each crisis is very different but the reaction of both sets of fans was the same save the core who will always attend games no matter what.

The legends game IMO failed on poor organisation and price and had nothing to do in general with fans being concerned about where their money was going. If they were concerned why did so many drop their notes and coins in the buckets and why was the legends night with McMenemy and Co so well attended?

This gloating at Pompey's predicament is difficult to understand given where we were this time last year. If it's because they revelled in our discomfort does that mean we have to react in the same childish way? I thought we had more class than them but maybe I was wrong.

As Ghandi was quoted as saying, a culture based on an eye for an eye will only succeed in making us all blind. ( Or words to that effect)

Fair post 19. I personally would like Pompey well below us but not out of existence. I think generally there is less charity for Pompey's plight because of their ludicrous financial mismanagement. They are getting what they deserve to be honest whilst we suffered largely due to stadium debt which could easily have been serviced had we kept our premership status.

I think an inability to service a debt does count as financial mismanagement. When we did have access to finance (sale of Walcott, Bale etc) we chose to speculate. I admit that Pompeys speculation is on a far greater scale than we attempted ourselves, but there premiership income flow allowed them to do so.

I for one feel slightly sorry for the average Pompey fan, and have no urge to see them fold. I would however like to see them suffer for a couple of years, and hopefully we will have a few tasty derbies as we pass them on our way up.

Unlike most on here, I don't fancy them in the 5th round of the cup. I feel that they would have too much quality for us. Next year however will be different

I agree - love them or hate them football in our region would be all the poorer without them and they are the last team we need to meet in the 5th round. We saw off Stern John today so perhaps next up should be Rasiak? In fact I probably dislike Reading and their plastic fans more than I do Pompey.

they often say we had similar crowds last year when we were struggling - just not true.

Lowest we got, in any competition was 11,331 - for a midweek league cup game, against a CCC team we had played at home only ten days earlier and lost.

Although of course you could argue that had we not spent the Bale and Walcott money etc then we would have had no chance of promotion and thus would have ended up in the same situation that we found ourselves (albeit over a longer period.) We had to achieve promotion to the prem if we wanted the club to continue because the stadium debt made it unsustainable in the long term.

The Portsmouth situation is very different. They could quite easily have lived within their means and battled every year. Had they stayed up they would have continued to pocket the TV money and been quite comfortable. You could argue that we had little choice whereas Portsmouth certainly did. It's late so apologies if I have not made myself clear but hopefully someone will understand what I'm saying!

That really does put things into perspective.

Were you born in Southampton or did you grow up in the city? Neither of which is obviously a requirement to be a saints fan and indeed its great to see saints fans all over the world, many of which have probably never set foot in our fair city.

However if you did not grow up in Southampton you cannot really understand the depth of feeling between Southampton and Portsmouth. Its not just a football thing its far far deeper than that. Hyperthetically speaking it wouldnt matter if we played a team like Reading, Bournemouth or Aldershot season after season in the Premier league, Pompey would always be our rivals even if they were playing non league.

You mention in an earlier post that you thought it was childish that saints fans were gloating about pompeys current situation. Of course saints fans are happy, i would have been shocked had Pompey fans not had been gloating when we were in that situation as well last season.

I dont particularly care if other teams in the region are doing well or not, i have no depth of feeling either way for the likes of Aldershot, Reading or Bournemouth. What i do have is a love of Southampton and a hatred of Portsmouth and that will never change no matter what the circumatances.

I've had years of being told how great their fans and history are.

For the most I have been very fair with them, but those crowd figures cracked me up.

I shall make the most of it at work tomorrow.

I take it you dont live, work or have grown up amongst them?
