Just checked - YouTube says 1983 but it was definitely 1984. Quite a treat as a kid to have Saints live on BBC midweek back then. Blackburn cup replay night have been as well?

Thanks for posting.

IIRC we were on live TV twice in 6 days. This match was on the Friday night on BbC 1 and the previous Sunday our FA cup quarter final at Sheffield Wednesday had been on live on iTV.

(and yes the previous round at Blackburn in the cup was also live on TV)

I have the VHS tape "Race for the championship" covering the 83/84 season. Narrated by Brian Moore it details the battle for the league title between Liverpool and Manchester United, apparently oblivious to the fact that United finished fourth in a two-horse race. Talking about this game he refers patronisingly to "two of the most unexpected goals of the season". Right at the end he adds a by-the-way, "Southampton finished second".

Weds away here. Horror miss from Frank Worthington.

Won the replay 5-1 IIRC, Imre Varadi missed a chance to put them 2 up and then we scored 3 in 20 minutes.

Ah yes, the replay score has reminded me of the days when you had to rely on the radio if you weren’t at the game.

For the Wednesday game I managed to drop the radio in the bath in the first half when we we trailing 1-0. By the time it had dried out, the saints were also “home and dry” in the quarter final.

I month or so earlier I’d dropped it on the floor, sending batteries flying in all directions, in reaction to Steve Moran’s goal at Fratton Park - I was still trying to find the batteries when Frank Bough confirmed the final score on the TV.

The radio went on to do some sterling service in various future relegation battles - in particular I remember having it pressed to my ear away at villa (last game of the souness season) and at the dell after we had finished (and they were still playing at city but helpfully didn’t have their own radio in the dug out 🙂 )

Didn’t we take something like 10k up there for a game that was live on TV? Also a rare outing for the plain red shirt
