It might be that people had poor experiences of the previous schemes. I signed up for the one at the Ordnance Survey in 2003/4 and it was so appalling I stopped using halfway through the season even though I had paid for it. We frequently got drivers who didn't know the way back after the game, a couple of times I had to direct them. And the buses used to get stuck in gridlock. Sometimes it was two hours after the final whistle before I got back to my car. With a two hour drive after that it just wasn't appealing. And it didn't operate for evening games.

While the idea of perpetually being a shark in the EFL pool of little fish seems enticing it is not sustainable. I can't think of a single club that is run successfully on the lines of being competitive, but not too competitive in the Championship. It is a division you eventually leave in one direction or the other. Within two seasons of not going up we would be stripped of any player of quality with only home defeats to Preston to look forward to. And while I loathe the EPL, Hull and Ipswich are showing that it is possible to give it a decent go. The other factor is that paradoxically, it is cheaper to be an away fan thanks to the price-cap that scandalously we don't have in the Championship.

Fines and compensation will not hurt City. They are backed by a family worth a trillion dollars. They can cough up a couple of billion without blinking. Expulsion is the only thing that will hurt them. And they should go into League 2.

Right at the very end Redmond was heading through on goal when he was tripped by a Watford player who had already been booked. Dean had his whistle in his mouth to blow for the foul. Realised he would have to show a red card and then waved play on.
