I'm pushed to think of any of my self-employed friends who are strugging to be honest - even in these 'difficult times'.

Turn it on its head then. If you take time off (sick / holiday) you won't LOSE money. Most successful self-employed project their annual earnings to include time off, e.g. you might decide you need to earn £52K a year. You'll spread that £52K over 52 weeks even if you don't work 52 weeks. In exactly the same way as an employed person might be paid £26K a year but only work 48 of the 52 weeks. Their cost is spread over 52 weeks. Oh and I have been self-employed so I do know how it works.
