  4. Damn - you noticed my political spin However, it is possible to legitimately avoid tax by paying yourself dividends instead of salary so there are advantages not available to we minions. I'm pushed to think of any of my self-employed friends who are strugging to be honest - even in these 'difficult times'.
  5. Turn it on its head then. If you take time off (sick / holiday) you won't LOSE money. Most successful self-employed project their annual earnings to include time off, e.g. you might decide you need to earn £52K a year. You'll spread that £52K over 52 weeks even if you don't work 52 weeks. In exactly the same way as an employed person might be paid £26K a year but only work 48 of the 52 weeks. Their cost is spread over 52 weeks. Oh and I have been self-employed so I do know how it works.
