Centre Backs ..........Malcolm Waldron, Reuben Agboola perhaps??
50 and 40 years ago, sort of confirms my point. Agboola particularly was never that successful (at Saints), 90 apps. I remember Malc well, but like I said he signed pro over 50 years ago (74) and is nearly as old as me.

Have we ever had a goalkeeper come through the academy and become a regular in the first team? Can't think of anyone. I wonder why that is?
More recently (a bit) Michael Poke probably got the closest, but in the end only made 4 apps. Played regularly for Torquay. Basically though the answer is no. We've never done particularly well with CBs either.

Inspired by Sheff Utd signing Louie Barry...as per title.
Danny Wallace, closely followed by Lee Todd.
Not just Danny, Rod and Ray as well.

Ramsay MacDonald was way before our time. I don't know what position he played though.
Played originally on the left but later in his career moved to the right.

He played for our academy teams aswell.
He played for the U18s (one academy team), but it's a hell of a stretch to say he is a (Saints) Academy product. He had already played in the League for Plymouth.

Not many sides get better after relegation.
We have lost KWP, Onuachu, Sulemana and Lumley. Downs and Quarshie have come the other way. Is the squad strengthened? difficult to know until we see those two players play a few games.
I think it's fair to say we will lose a couple of our `wanted' and better quality players (let's say Ramsdale and Fernandes for argument's sake). So, to stand still (in terms of squad quality) we need to find two players as good as those, which is very unlikely.
We then need to see maybe 6 more players depart (let's say ABK, Taylor, BBD, Armstrong, Bednarek and Edwards) and then bring in, maybe, 3 to replace them. All three replacements will need to be improvements for the squad to be strengthened.
In reality, the quality is not going to increase. We might be stay about the same, if we are lucky, and that would be a win.We also lost Ugochukwu (loan), Lallana (retired), probably some others, and gained BBD (if that's a gain), Edozie,.Armstrong and others?

I dont disagree about Lowe in general. However he does not take a salary as an MP apparently
That's not true. He takes a salary but donates his net income from that salary every month to a charity, allegedly. Just shows how much wealth he has that he can afford to do this.

Weird trend that started a few years ago.
It's primarily to do with diverting medical staff away from the activities on the pitch. In the good old days St Johns Ambulance would have dealt with the situation in the crowd.

You snookered yourself by saying ‘foreign’ instead of ‘overseas’, otherwise you could have had Graeme Le Saux.
Gareth Bale perhaps? He was born in Wales.

Lowe, and some on here, completely missing the point (Lowe deliberately of course). This is a Premier League/FA initiative and presumably there is some financial incentive for clubs to create this additional coaching position. Can't blame Saints or any other club for getting an extra coach on the cheap while a knowledging that the recruitment will be on a fair and non-discriminatory basis. Obviously at each club there will be only one successful applicant, so it will be interesting to know over the whole scheme whether any diversity targets are actually met. In my view the only 'discriminatory' element should have been that the applicants were British citizens, but that doesn't seem to have been mentioned.
Lowe should keep his toffee nose out of our Club's affairs and stick to being a loser.

Discussion on Adam Lallana elsewhere got me thinking on this as I’d say he is in the top twenty. But where? And what’s the criteria? Future /previous glory at other clubs / internationally can make a big difference - I’m going to give it a try off top of my head so apologies for missing some out and I’m allowed to come back and edit these names!
1. MLT ( no arguing allowed) 2. Shearer ( mainly for England and Premiership goals) 3. Shilton ( our best ever goalie so also no arguing allowed) 4.Bale ( who won EVERYTHING as a player) 5. Paine ( appearances) 6. Keegan Eng captain & pfa player of the year AT Saints! 7. Channon 8. Ball ( he won a World Cup so don’t argue!) 9. Van Dyke ( our best ever CB) 10. Ron Davies legend 11. Mane multiple title winner 12. Adam! 13. Sir Rickie Lambert (because) 14. Luke Shaw 15. Theo 16. JWP ( direct free kicks and consecutive matches) 17. Tadic (class) 18. Jose Fonte 19. Chivers 20 Bates/Franny legend. 🤣
That was my first off top of my head version. So please calm down it’s only for fun. Now to check google ChatGPT grok Siri and Alexa plus no doubt get schooled by MLG and Saints historians shortly! 😇
Anyone who puts Channon 7th needs seriously arguing with, you cannot be serious. Personally will always think he was better than MLT. Also don't recall Dick van Dyke ever playing for us, not even as a sweeper. I guess youth influences your list, given it omits Steve Williams and Rod Wallace. 🫢

Bit harsh on Rusk maybe but Still needs to be able to shape his own team. Onwards and upwards.
My thoughts too, after all he was given the 1st team role because of his success with the u21s. Perhaps it was what he wanted rather than stepping back.

Nostalgia may play a part but I don’t think it’s revisionist to say that he was technically one of the best players we have had in the past decade. He gave the ball away but also tried to, often successfully, make things happen that others couldn’t.
I don’t necessarily think he’s the answer in the championship at his current age but it doesn’t diminish his ability.
Really don't think he did it often enough to be thought of in the way some do. As I said I liked him but he was frustrating when he was with us, especially when you see what he did when he left. But that wasn't really the point of my post, he is 37, and would not suit in the Championship now.

By all accounts Tadic was on something like €135k per week at Fenerbache. I appreciate he's a free agent now, but I would be surprised if he wanted or needed to accept a fraction of that sort of wage to get the shit kicked out of him in the Championship. I would have thought a final decent pay day in Saudi or somewhere would be more appealing at this point in his career.
Tadic will be 37 in November (older than Lallana when he rejoined), he wouldn't last the season in the Champ, probably wouldn't even make it to his 37th birthday. I like Tadic, and clearly he made a hellofa impact for Ajax, but there are definitely some rose tinted specs being used when remembering his time at Saints. Along with Gaston was notorious for giving the ball away while we were attacking, leading to goals conceded.

FYI Rangers.
We have some cracking players available at knockdown prices.
Come and get yourselves the ultimate crab midfielder, ideal for propaganda football - Will Smallbone, available at a cut price.
Also, come and get yourselves an outfield player who plays in goal, absolutely ideal for your new direction. Gavin Bazunu is available for free
and last but not least, don't forget to pickup Russell Martins boyfriend, the ultimate ball playing centre back who can play up front, in goal, at left back or RB - basically anywhere on the pitch. Jack Stephens is yours for a snip.
And because we like Rangers, we are even prepared to throw in our dynamic, attacking winger Ryan Fraser into the mix for free. He won't spend more time stirring in the background than on the pitch, honest.
Sadly the chances of Bazunu, Smallbone and Manning joining Russ at Rangers are very small unless the new owners are willing to completely break with tradition. I don't like sectarianism but it is alive and well in Scottish football. Maybe Smallbone might be considered given that he was born in Basingstoke.

Know next to nothing about this guy. What position does he play and do we have reports about his performance at Goztepe?
Midfielder, scored 6 goals for Goztepe (4 in the Cup). Apparently was "the most famous wonderkid in the J. League"🤣

Lurch has been released by Tottenham. He played a few times for them last season and looked reasonable when I saw him. I think he CHDAJFU.
See they are also signing Danso for £21m, not sure he looked like a potential £21m player when he was with us. Hojbjerg's move to Marseille will also be permanent.
