The game was very open by the time he came on though as Wigan were pushing to get back in. Long is wasted as a starter unless you plan to defend deep and play on the counter which I doubt we will do against West Ham.

After we scored we seemed to take the burners off, after a good start to the second half, and Wigan came right back at us. For me a the PL team we should have been capable of taking the sting out of with some controlled possession (I know those are two dirty words after MoPe) once we got the second (slightly fortuitous but well taken by Cedric) goal we then controlled the rest of the game. It felt to me after we went 1 up we don't cope well with Wigan's inevitable backlash.

That is what has wound me up the most, he always refused to use it at Stoke!

Terrible first half better second. Still a lot of issues for Hughes to work on a PL side would have field day in the first half. Even second half I felt we dropped deep after the first goal but a good second put some gloss on the result. Still no sign of strikers scoring which is a worry (though was that Guido's third assist with a near post flick on for Hoj's goal?) Defence still looks very shaky but not sure their is much the manager can do with the current squad. Nice to see Redmond putting in a couple of good balls for the penalty and Cedric's goal. and a shout out for McCarthy who looks so much better than Forster in goal.

The dream would be united in the final saints winning 3-2 after a clearly off side goal is ruled onside....

Ok our good 5 minutes seem over Wigan back on the attack.

Well Mark hasn't introduced a high press style Wigan players passing it about while saints players just stand and watch.

We are playing 4-2-3-1 though.

They just showed a Wigan player in the highlights run 80+ yards without a single challenge on him...

We really don't look any better but then Hughes was unlikely to make much difference after 2 days.

It feels like we are the L1 side putting in a backs to the wall performance to try nick a cheeky win against a big side.
