I think the issue is with the word “lottery”. Lottery implies that it’s completely random (like a coin flip). Its not random because teams can exert a fair amount of control over it by strategizing who will take them, what the goalies tendencies are etc. As you say though the other variables such as, nerves, pressure, confidence, what has already happened in the shootout are in play. So not a lottery as such but there isn’t as big as an advantage for the stronger team as there is in normal play.

I think mentally it was much tougher. In the French game they had much less pressure knowing that the French were heavy favourites and feeling the pressure themselves. In this one, there was added pressure due to already having won a penalty shootout vs France. There’s now some expectancy and also knowing that Spain had missed a few penalties lately. The early Spain miss may have even ratcheted up the pressure a bit more, a place in the semi was within touching distance. If that makes any sense at all. 😂

Wonder how much the Swiss keeper would cost...
