  1. Just been watching the "highlights" again and it is strange how U2 came across. Larry Mullen seemed very disinterested in the after concert interview and that cam through in their performance.

One thing that really grates. It is an awsome festival yet the bland one dimensional people they get to do the links from Radio 1 turn it into amateur hour.

  2. Like Diana who, in Royals circles was attractive but in reality was average, the media hype up anyone in public life who has one iota of sex appeal as being "special."

There are better looking women in my office but because Pippa has that "Royal" thing going on all of a sudden she is special. Strange that no one took a blind bit of notice of her before her sister got the royal sh*g of approval.

  3. There is an awful lot of b*ll*cks spouted on this thread. I have worked in both the public and private sector and I can tell you that life in the public sector is so much harder nowdays.

I manage 14 people, I work 10 hour days, I have trouble getting leave because I can't get staff to act up for me, I earn less than the national average wage, there is no overtime available so I don't get paid for the extra hours I work, my office is undermanned and those who do come in end up going off sick because of the stress, there is a pay freeze, there is no opportunty for promotion. No I didn't go on strike but after reading this thread I wish I had.

I am earning half or what I did ten years ago with more stress to do what? To serve the public. The very public now who are saying that the public sector have got it easy.

What you have to understand is this. You want your bins cleared, your children taught, your streets safe from crime right? None of these things actually create a cash flow. They are dependant on Governement funding. They are essential for the effecient running of our society yet those in the private sector think they are paying too much for these services. The truth is that they are not paying enough.

I don't agree with strikes but the people who went out yesterday have got a grievance. If someone signs up for a contract they expect that to be honoured. The Government can't suddenly change someone's pension scheme after 20 odd years of service. Where does that happen in the public sector?

I am all up for equality. BUt that applies to both sectors. You want change fine, but for new starters not people who signed up for a package years ago.

  4. My heart bleeds for them.

If the Tories achieve one thing, and one thing only, I hope it is to sort out the balance between the public and private sector. The public sector is too big and too cushy. It's time that it was dragged into the real world.

They won't like it and they'll strike, but in the end it'll be a price worth paying to sort it out.

Abolutely, and while they are at it they can standardise the pay and perks too so a massive pay rise for me with a company car, mobile phone and laptop.

We do live in the real world mate and trust me, the private sector pays better and offers better perks - unless you count free paper clips as a perk.

  5. Kenneth Clark quote from today :)

"Asked about what this would mean in practice, he said: "If an old lady finds she's got an 18 year old burgling her house and she picks up a kitchen knife and sticks it in him she has not committed a criminal offence and we will make that clear."

He added: "We will make it quite clear you can hit the burglar with the poker if he's in the house and you have a perfect defence when you do so."

Mr Clarke said legal protection would not extend to anyone shooting a burglar in the back when they were fleeing or "getting their friends together to beat them up"."

    More here:

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-13957587

Thi is quite chilling and will, if made law, make homes less safe not more safe. More householders will end up injured or dead. It will not deter burglars but it will ensure that they go on jobs tooled up. I can't believe the quote about encouraging little old ladies to stab people. Unbelievable.

  6. So in your case files it says that the poor old burgular was really scared, even more so when confronted.

I don't start on that assumption at all. I start on the assumption that:

    I live in a 4 bedroom house

My wife and I occupy 1 bedroom

My 2 young children occupy 2 other bedrooms

If I hear a burgular come into my house, my first problem is getting to my children before the scumbag does. Highly unlikely that I am going to be able to do that, in the dead of night, without said scumbag hearing.

My next problem is getting to a phone, calling 999 and whispering down it in order try to get help.

Confrontation in the home is highly likely, therefore so is some sort of violence.

And no, I don't start from that assumption. I don't know how many times I (we) have to tell you, we know that it shouldn't end up in death, but occasionally it does.

If we go by your assumption(s) that burgulars are scared of the homeowner and that they only want to steal possessions, why did the 4 masked men not go running from the house when they heard the 3 people upstairs moving around and making their way downstairs?

You cite one case. Do you know what actaully happened? Why do you think someone who breaks into your house is remotely interested at getting at your children?

Confrontation is "highly likely" if you decide to chase the villian. And why whisper. You want the bloke to hear so that he knows the cops are on the way. Most people have moble phones if not cordless phones in the bedroom. You can go on making excuses all you like but if you really want a fight vote for dear old Ken Clarke and you will be sorted. or maybe even dead because the chances are if this bill gets passed burglars will start to carry knives and guns.

  7. I'd rather not, I'd really rather not. I wouldn't have a clue where to start to look and for what it's worth I probably agree that most burglaries do not end up in violence.

But that fact remains that some do. And the fact remains that those that do are solely the responsibility of the burgler - nobody asks to have their home burgled.

Therfore when a burgler is confronted they should expect the worst, the very worst - that is the risk they run, that is the nature of their profession.

Because you asked me to do some homework, perhaps you'd like to do the same:

"....most are more scared than the people they are robbbing." Go on, where on earth did you get that from, where in your CPS department do you have that stat?????

I'm really beginning to dispair for the honest hardworking man in the street. Please don't shout at the burgler - you'll scare him.

    I'm just.... speachle.......

I read the case files ever day. Come and talk to our lawyers. You start from the assumption that people who break into your home are intent on doing you harm. They are not, they just want to steal things from you. That is not an offence punishable by death.

  8. I'd rather not, I'd really rather not. I wouldn't have a clue where to start to look and for what it's worth I probably agree that most burglaries do not end up in violence.

Its got nothing to do with shouting. It comes back to using reasonable force. LIke it or not, if you stab someone to death the court is going to take some convincing that is reasonable. You need to justify taking a life compared to taking a telly.

  9. As far as I can glean, once he has refused to return your possessions, refused to leave your property and now has a knife against your throat - it it then time to phone the police.

I think the point is that you call the police immediately, not after a long discussion with him!

To give you some idea of where you stand legally - burglary is an either way offence. This means that the case can be heard in either the Magistrates Court or the Crown Court depending on the seriousness of the case or if the defendant elects for a Crown Court trial. Manslaughter or muder are indictable only offences, that is they are offences that can only be heard in the Crown Court because of the serious nature of the offences and the greater sentencing power of the court for guilty verdicts.

  10. So, to make clear...I watched some of Coldplay's set. I really didn't enjoy it.Hence my comment.

If people really only follow bands because they are cool they are missing out. From where a lot of people stand U2 are pretty uncool. I went off them a long time ago...but I am happy to admit they played perhaps the most exciting show I have ever seen , back in 1980 at the Lyceum.

Would this thread really have been better if only people broadly agreeing with the OP had joined in?

I read it as a general Glasto thread, and offered something positive, if perhaps a little tongue in cheek, about another act, as well as having a contradictory view on Coldplay.

thats how it goes, isn't it?

You could equally have said that Coldplay aren't my thing and didn't enjoy them but I did enjoy so and so. But your statement was a bit heavy wasn't it?

Still, no point in arguing and I am sorry if I overreacted to your post Teamsaint.

  11. just to be clear (not really being a coldplay fan)

what bands are seen as good..and not nerdy to follow..?

Anyone who becomes successful (in the country at least) immediately becomes "uncool." This is the John Peel School of Coolness where you have to find a rubbish band who no one has heard of and have made one good record. You must then champion their cause to all who will listen even though you probaly don't listen to it yourself.

Thing is music it totally subjective. How to you decide which band/arist is better than another? Record sales are one yardstick but if you really don't like a band like Coldplay for example, the fact they shift shedloads of CDs isn't going to make one iota of difference.

If you follow a band because they are cool and not nerdy I would suggest that you are doing so for the wrong reason.

I have just started listening to Mumford & Sons and Fleet Foxes. A couple of years ago I wouldn't have touched them with a barge pole. I am not soing so because someone says they are cool. I saw Mumford & Sons on the TV and liked them and I found a Fleet Foxes CD lying around at work, shoved it in the PC and liked it.

Years ago my mate was crazy about Neil Young. At the time I was very into English Prog, Yes, ELP, Genesis and couldn't get my head around that American whine. Now I love Neil Young. (By the way, for the younger members of this thread Prog was huge in this country in the early 70s despite being very "uncool.")

If you like something go with it if you don't, don't.

  12. coldplay are boring in a genuinely epic way.

They are everything that is wrong with rock and roll.

hope the go! team get shown...they were ace a couple of years ago.

By the way, if this was a discussion you wouldn't have just come out with this crass statement, you would have expanded on why you think Coldplay are boring etc. But instead you just make a statment as though it is wriiten in stone somewhere. Perhaps you should have started with "In my opinion"...

By the way, I have the last Go Team CD. It is missing something. Perhaps Chris Martin could write them a ballard :)

  13. i thought this was a discussion forum !!

Differing opinions are the point aren't they. Not p***ing on anybodys enjoyment, just expressing an opinion.

It would be very boring if we all had the same taste.

Can't really understand why what I said was SO offensive.

Last years I saw Hazel O'connor at a festival, and I didn't enjoy her show, but I actuallt DID enjoy the fact that lots of people there clearly loved it. So I went off for a beer while they enjoyed it.No problem.

As it turns out, go! team were a bit average.. but so it goes.

But please do tell me what would make me a better person, apart from agreeing with everybody on forums.

Happy to oblige. If you had posted that you had just watched a concert by Band X and I didn't care for Band X I would have thought fair play, not my cup of tea but so what. I wouldn't have then joined the thread and had a pop at Band X.

I am sure millions of people think Coldplay are rubbish but I had just seen their concert and thought it was great. Silly me for saying so because it then means that it becomes a "cool" competion. Oh, someone likes Coldplay, lets have a dig.

If I had come on saying I thought that Coldplay were the best band in the world then fine, lets have a "discussion." I didn't, I said I just saw the concert and thought it was the mutts nuts. Stupid of me I know but there you go...

  14. No it isn't. I spoke to one of our lawyers today for clarification. For years the law has made provision for protection of your person or property. You are allowed to defend yourself using "reasonable force." Causing the death of another person immediately puts you at risk of a serious charge, including murder. As I keep saying, you can stop them being a threat by calling the police. Most of them will leg it anyway, unless they have been unluckly enough to stumble into your abode, in which case....

  15. How do you know what type of burglar it is ?

It is not difficult. A burgler is someone who breaks into your home to steal something. I imagine if someone wanted to kill you they could do that anywhere, not just in your home. Burglers are called burglers because they burgle. You are confusing them with murderers.

  16. Just turn that hypothetical argument around and have a think about it for a while. You'd quite happily allow a burgerlar to knife your family because of the fear of what may happen in a court. You are cool with that, yes?

How may burglers actually commit murder?

  17. Personally I can't see anyone who has said that and I can't be bothered to look, however I do agree with you that Burley wasn't as bad as Branfoot but he was no better than Redknapp.

Burley did a poor job with one of if not the best squad in the league. We had players like Stern John, saganowski, Rasiak and Skacel which were all out on loan when Pearson was here, which is one reason why your comparisons with Burley and Pearson are highly flawed.

Redknapp just didn't want to be here and couldn't be bothered whilst Branfoot (in a different era) was bloody awful

Perhaps the players should take some of the blame? And you can say Burely did a poor job but the fact reamins that at the point he left he was the best performing manager in terms of points per games that we had had.

  18. I am a civil servant but I won't be striking on Thursday. Not because I don't agree with the sentiment but I don't agree with strikes. I also think it is not unreasonable to change the pension structure for new starters given the state of the economy. But to change it now for people who have been working (mostly on below average wages) for the public secor for years is just plan wrong.

  19. Of course the team was weakened by the loss of Bale, Jones etc. That season midtable was more realistic, but it was blindingly obvious through the previous season and the summer we need a big strong centre half. The money was there because we spent £1m on Saganowski and Safri, and then later £1m on Andrew Davies and £14k a week contract to Euell, et Burley failed to address it, something Pearson did immediately by signing Lucketti and Chris Perry, same budget....

And Pearson came with a whisker of taking us down. When Burley left we were closer the the play offs than relegation.
