Just realised it is live on Sky Sports ! Tuned in just in time to see Griffiths take his 3rd wicket, 3/22 off 6.1 overs. Good stuff.

184/8 off 40 overs. Excellent figures for Griffiths especially as he was bowling at the death, 4/29 off 8 overs.

Hants 185/7, Adams in great form with 79 off 91 balls. Ervine 37 off 39 and Dimi 28 not out off 20 balls made sure we got home with 17 balls to spare

I watched it on Sky and thought generally we did very well. Griffiths bowling was superb and our fielding was pretty good. Lumb, Benham and dawson all gave their wickets away rather too easily but Adams and the others did well. We could do very well in this competition if we put our minds to it.

Yes, Griffiths was bowling up around 90mph and had very good control, I was impressed.

Last year of the Pro 40 so would be nice to win it though I'd rather we stayed in CC1 !

seem to recall something about Dimi steadying a wobbly middle order...hitting a four or two...a six thrown in

 

i spent £30. i got in for nothing and i took 8 cans in. WTF was i doing?....admitedly i only had 3 of the cans, but can't believe i still managed to spend that much on beer. oh a £7 burger too....

Saw a bit on TV before the Saints game. Griffiths doesn't usually bowl in one day games does he? But an excellent performance from him.

Well I think with this being the last Pro 40 tourney, at least for now, it's a good chance to give younger players experience. I think now though Griffiths will stay in the team and may even get selected for the 4 day games.

That is what I heard last night as well.

 

Also spoke to Nick Pothas. He should be back tomorrow but if the groin goes again that will be it for the season

He has played in the last three championship games and is now considered the fastest bowler on the staff.

I spoke to him a couple of weeks ago and asked if next season he was going to develop into a batsman who could bowl or a bowler who could bat. He said definately a batsman.

 

He opened against the University earlier in the season. Looks like they are going to open him to step up his development.

After a good season in Hampshire’s Second XI, David Griffiths’ selection for the Pro40 team to play Gloucestershire Gladiators proved a sound move for the Hawks as he came away with a 4 wicket haul and a Man of the Match Award.

 

At speeds touching 89 miles per hour he bowled first Kadeer Ali for 8 and then castled Alex Gidman for two with a beautiful yorker. In his death spell his skill with the yorker came into play again as he trapped Steve Adshead lbw and then clean bowled key Gloucestershire batsman Chris Taylor for 44 to effectively wrap up the visitors’ chances of posting a really competitive score.

 

Speaking after the game, captain Dimi Mascarenhas was full of praise for Griffiths’ performance. “Just brilliant” he told me. “He’s come into the Championship side and done exceptionally well. He’s bowled with good pace in good areas and we’re very pleased with him. And today – just awesome. Those first couple of wickets, and then to bowl brilliantly at the death. He’s one to watch for the future, that’s for sure.”

 

When accepting his Man of the Match Award, Griffiths gave much of the credit to the Hampshire coaching team, and to Mascarenhas, saying he was just doing what his captain told him to. This made Dimi laugh. “Well obviously I’ve got a bit more experience than him, but just because I tell him to do something doesn’t mean he can automatically do it! He runs in and he knows where to put the ball and that’s exactly what he’s doing. Everyone says ‘bowl a yorker’ but it’s not an easy thing to do, and he did it brilliantly. I’m sure after that performance he’s cemented his place for the next game.”

 

And what did the man himself have to say about it all? “Chalky [Giles White]’s given me the opportunity, with Corky not being here, and I’ve taken it and put another thought in Chalky’s mind that I can play in all forms of cricket. The first wicket was great because it sets the tone for the whole innings, but I enjoyed all four of them. I try to play like that every game, but it doesn’t always come off. All the bowlers bowled well to keep them to 184 and Jimmy finished it off with an unbelievable batting display.”

 

Griffiths was just one of a handful of young players in the winning side. “They’re there because they’re good enough” Dimi said. “We’re not just going to give anyone a game, they have to earn it. Those guys definitely deserve it, and anyway, they’ve proved it.”

 

So where now in the Pro40 for the team as a whole? “We’ve just got to keep winning. Somerset haven’t lost yet and we have to play them, so if we beat Somerset and beat everybody else we’ll win the trophy.” I comment that he makes it sound very easy. “It’s definitely not that easy” Dimi laughs. “You know cricket!”
