Pilchards Posted 8 August, 2010 Share Posted 8 August, 2010 Its a known problem that Saints are very slow starters, why though? Are the friendlies too easy or maybe not enough of them. Its okay having them running up and down by getting them fit but this season a few players started to pick up too many injuries for some reason. alpine_saint Posted 8 August, 2010 Share Posted 8 August, 2010 Our pre-seasons and transfer activity are too late, and then half-arsed. Something I get roundly abused for when I point it out every summer.
SnailOB Posted 8 August, 2010 Share Posted 8 August, 2010 hard to explain, particularly when we have had different players / playing styles / chairmen / managers / pre seasons etc.. Its not like the club has a pre-season template that has to be followed in name of tradition or something. Very confusing and annoying
sadoldgit Posted 8 August, 2010 Share Posted 8 August, 2010 Good question. We also used to be a great home team and rubbish away. Man Utd are usualy stronger after Christmas. Go figure. I think it is a mental thing. You can get people fit but getting their heads right is another matter.
bognor regis pete Posted 8 August, 2010 Share Posted 8 August, 2010 we haven't won an opening game this century, we've had about seven different managers in that time and not one has got us up & running for the opening game

Something I get roundly abused for when I point it out every summer. I think the reason that you get abuse Alps is because you assume that nothing is going on behind the scenes. Yep, we are short up front but we have tried to sign Tyson and apparently Antionio (did he play yesterday by the way). Not all bids come off and should we then sign inferior players or wait for the players we need?
David Strover Posted 8 August, 2010 Share Posted 8 August, 2010 Just for the record that was a 'record' yesterday. It's the first time Southampton Football Club has lost it's opening league game in third level of the professional game, be it Division Three, Division Three (South), Division Three (again) or League One. Oh I am so glad I was alive to witness another milestone in the club's glorious history. As for signing activity I to was wondering whether the moaners on here have some insight to the club's machinations. We haven't signed anyone on ergo we haven't tried to sign anyone on. That makes no sense and is as usual a massive assumption. For all I know Pardew et al have been knocking doors down left right and centre trying to get the 'right' player for the club but haven't, so far, had any luck or maybe are still waiting for answers. Anyway it doesn't matter because if we had have signed on these three or four players we 'need' before yesterdays game I would bet you a pound to a penny that all the same moaners would have been on here saying we'd signed on the 'wrong' player(s). Sometimes in life you just can't win - if you manage a football team this normally is the case....
