fborosaint Posted 4 July, 2014 Share Posted 4 July, 2014 I'm visiting the US in late August and was wondering if anyone is aware of places to watch Saints in both Washington DC and the Virginia Beach area. This will be for the West Brom home and West Ham away games. Any help would be fantastic, Cheers!
Rut Posted 4 July, 2014 Share Posted 4 July, 2014 I'm sure you'll get some more specific recommendations but this will give you a starting point. Just give them a call to make sure they are open & show all the games. If it's a 3pm UK (10am ET) game then you prob won't get the sound on Saints v WBA/WHU but they will have it on one of the screens somewhere in the pub. Better than nothing. http://www.soccerbars.com/modules/soccerbars/by_country.php?country_selected=USA

It's a chain Irish bar and if you check their website (http://www.fadoirishpub.com/washington/) they should have the schedule of matches to be shown a week or so in advance. Don't be surprised if there's a large contingent of Chelski or Manure fans and the Saints game is on in some corner with no sound. Not sure where you're staying but in Old Town Alexandria , Virginia (just cross the Potomac from DC) there's Murphys, which is a decent Irish bar (they have Kilkenny on tap!) http://murphyspub.com/ Old Town is a cool area to check out anyway. PM me if you need more help in DC, I lived there for many moons.
buctootim Posted 17 July, 2014 Share Posted 17 July, 2014 (edited) The Lucky bar near Dupont Circle is good. Lots of tvs split across two floors. Heavy Man U / Man C bias for PL but they might put Saints on if you ask nicely. http://luckybardc.com/ "Don't see your game on the full schedule? E-mail paul@luckybardc.com or call us at 202-331-3733 and we'll see what we can do" https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/1221+Connecticut+Ave+NW,+Washington,+DC+20036,+USA/@38.906604,-77.041304,3a,84.3y,104.46h,75.24t/data=!3m5!1e1!3m3!1sDLcUjrwtSKSXQJbsb2F4pg!2e0!3e2 !4m2!3m1!1s0x89b7b7b89cf4988f:0x8dc2e2294e5a2a7a?h l=en Others here but I havent tried them. http://www.yelp.co.uk/search?find_desc=soccer+bars&find_loc=Dupont+Circle%2C+Washington%2C+DC Edited 22 July, 2014 by buctootim

Saint_Abroad Posted 17 July, 2014 Share Posted 17 July, 2014 As an aside, I don't know how you're getting to Virginia Beach or where it is in your plans, but if you were to drive there from DC know that traffic is horrendous heading south on I-95, towards Richmond, and Rt 64 East, towards VA Beach, can be very painful on weekends as well. My $.02, if you're comfortable taking the longer route then consider taking Rt 50 out of DC, across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge into the "Eastern Shore" area of Maryland. Eventually you'll work your way to Rt 13 South which will lead you through the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel (different than the aforementioned). When you get to the other side you'll be a stones throw from VA Beach. Again, not sure of your itinerary and maybe you're very familiar with the area but traffic in the DC area sucks and you have to take advantage of certain windows where it's less congested. This is just another option and may let you see something more interesting than the back of a Chevy Camaro for 3 hours stuck in stop and go traffic. Thats a good tip, the Eastern shore is worth a visit. Another way to do it is to drive thre backroads through rural Virginia. The Tides Inn in Irvington is a nice place for a stop and do some kayaking / sailing on the Chesapeake. http://www.tidesinn.com/
fborosaint Posted 19 July, 2014 Author Share Posted 19 July, 2014 Thanks guys for the top advice- it's my first time visiting that area of the country, so appreciate the help. Can't wait to get out there now!
Saint_Abroad Posted 21 July, 2014 Share Posted 21 July, 2014 Just as a caveat when traversing that part of the US, along any of the major highways, know that State and Local Law Enforcement are more sensitive to those vehicles traveling in excess of the post speed limit then other parts of the US. As a heads up, as long as you're never more than 10 MPH above the posted speed limit you'll be fine. You don't have to do the exact speed limit as it is posted, and traffic can dictate an acceptable speed, just know that law enforcement in that part of the US are more sensitive to speeders. Granted, as UK citizen I doubt they'll extradite you for failing to pay a ticket but the experience can ruin a holiday so just some friendly advice. Rut Posted 24 July, 2014 Share Posted 24 July, 2014 If you do find somewhere good to watch the games then post on up where you went. Looking at what you are up against then you prob def won't be getting the sound. I'd say that it is pretty nailed that the Chelsea & Man City games will be the featured games in any pub you go to. As said earlier you should be able to see the Saints games though. Any decent so-called 'Soccer Bar' has the TV channels that show every game. Sat 23 Aug Chelsea v Leicester (Sound) Palace v West Ham Saints v West Brom Swansea v Burnley Sat 30 Aug Villa v Hull Man City v Stoke (Sound) Newcastle v Palace QPR v Sunderland Swansea v West Brom West Ham v Saints You may wanna search to see if there are such things as a WBA or West Ham supporter group in the area. They may meet each week at a certain pub and have their game as the main one. Don't think there is a Saints one there? If you do walk into a soccer bar then don't cringe too much when you see a load of Man Utd, Arsenal, Lpool etc shirts. The fact that they get up early on a Sat to go to a pub to watch the games is actually quite cool. Most of them have a good knowledge of the game. Over the years they've been fed the big teams and most of them choose one to support... There's MLS games on in Philly (Sun Aug 24) & DC (Sun Aug 31). Full schedule: http://www.mlssoccer.com/schedule?month=all&year=2014&club=all&competition_type=46&broadcast_type=all&op=Search&form_id=mls_schedule_form A bit of a hefty push-bike ride from Virginia Beach but if you were around that way.... Have also added a post for you on Facebook.com/SaintsFCUSA Trevor Slainte in Baltimore is Saints friendly? You'll probably have a better chance of catching a Māori All Blacks match. To add to that list, Darcy's Tavern, in Bradley Beach, NJ a small beach town near Pt Pleasant, NJ shows all matches, even got a "when the Saints go marching..." going with another guy. http://www.darcystavern.com/home.html
