My AI overview puts "Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Superintelligence" at number 3 in the list of threats to humanity.

What are your number 1 and 2 Whitey Grandad?

I can't remember now so I checked again. Strangely enough my AI is hedging its bets now that it's been sussed out.

Take your pick from the extensive list below. If you worried about this lot you'd never get to sleep tonight. Most of them seem to be a feature of overpopulation. Asteroids and supervolcanoes are difficult to prepare for. If either were to happen the pensioners will probably get the blame.

Technological and Engineered Risks

Artificial Intelligence (AI) Misalignment:

Autonomous systems or superintelligence could pursue goals detached from human safety and well-being.

Engineered Pandemics:

Advances in synthetic biology lower the barrier to creating and weaponizing highly contagious or lethal pathogens.

Nuclear Warfare:

Large stockpiles of nuclear weapons and ongoing international tensions carry the persistent risk of devastation and nuclear winter.

Cyberwarfare and Critical Infrastructure Collapse:

Widespread cyberattacks could paralyze power grids, financial systems, and essential global logistics.

Environmental and Ecological Risks

Extreme Climate Change:

Unchecked global warming risks triggering planetary tipping points, widespread heatwaves, and severe infrastructure breakdowns.

Biodiversity Loss and Ecosystem Collapse:

Mass extinction of species and the collapse of vital ecosystems threaten global food webs and human habitability.

Water Scarcity and Resource Depletion:

Over-extraction of aquifers and contested water basins threaten agriculture and drinking water for billions.

Societal, Geopolitical, and Natural Risks

Geoeconomic Confrontation and Global War:

Rising fragmentation, trade wars, and state-based armed conflicts undermine international cooperation.

Misinformation and Societal Polarization:

Widespread digital manipulation and fake news erode public trust and destabilize democratic governance.

Asteroid Impacts and Supervolcanoes:

Low-probability, high-impact natural disasters could eject debris, block sunlight, and trigger global famine.
