Ken Tone Posted 11 February, 2009 Share Posted 11 February, 2009 The thread about Skacel has already deteriorated onto the usual irrelevant and pointless bitter argument pro and anti Lowe, so forgive me starting a new thread on a closely related topic. Do all managers (not just Wotte) have strangely blinkered views of where players play? Quite apart from Skacel who is apparently now seen only as a left back in spite of playing much of his career in midfield, we also have BWP who was (is?) a striker, yet seems to be a left winger in Wotte's mind, presumably because he saw Poortvliet play him there a few times. Personally I don't agree with all the criticism of McGoldrick here as lazy etc ...he does work hard, just isn't all that good!.... but if we need an alternative up front, why on earth hasn't BWP been given a chance there alongside Saga? Even when he is used as a sub, it is as winger of sorts, or at best as the left side of a 3 man attack when we are desperate. Does no one tell managers where players used to play before they personally saw them?!! K.
Saints67 Posted 11 February, 2009 Share Posted 11 February, 2009 Playing left footers on the right wing and vice versa happens all the time in leagues. maybe they do this so that when the winger cuts in onto his favoured foot he will (a) be turning the defender onto his weaker foot (b) allow space for an overlapping full back or © be able to shoot across the keeper thereby giving a forward a simple tap in should the keeper parry it. Other times it can be necessity due to injuries or probably that it works really well in training. They may have analysed a teams weakspot and targeted a certain player. I feel, even with Perry and Size, our defence still has a youthful look to it and Skacel helps add to the experience if played at LB. I'm not sure where Murty at Reading plays but if he's a RB then we should look at getting him in on loan. As for BWP I'm not sure he's right for us and hasn't settled here like I hoped he would. Will probably go somewhere like Burnley and run riot.
hughieslastminutegoal Posted 11 February, 2009 Share Posted 11 February, 2009 .. © be able to shoot across the keeper thereby giving a forward a simple tap in should the keeper parry it. I don't think this bit is right - if you cut inside from the "wrong wing" and shoot with your natural foot, you'd tend to hit it with the instep and there will be a tendency for it to curl into the keeper, not fly across him. The other reasons you give for playing players on the wrong wing are probably right, you do attack the defenders weaker foot by cutting inside - but any defender worth his salt will "show" a winger like that the outside line, so playing on the wrong wing is not often a particularly good tactic, IMO. West End Saint Posted 11 February, 2009 Share Posted 11 February, 2009 Player positions have been an issue for me all season we have had players playing out of position since the first game this and not having a settled side or knowing who our best 11 are is why we are second bottom. No recognised left back the jury is still out on the 1 we have brought in No recognised right back James is not a defender end of Lallana wide right I dont think so in the hole or not at all for me No settled midfield partnership for me it needs to be spiderman & Surman No settled front two We have spent all season playing a system that hasnt worked and players havent been able to establish partnerships and understanding they have been played out of position and under performed I blame the management. slickmick Posted 11 February, 2009 Share Posted 11 February, 2009 No, DMG is definitely very, very lazy. Although it's difficult to sprint when you're weighed down with an ego like that. I thought he was weighed down by all the kebabs he knicks.

Bailey Posted 12 February, 2009 Share Posted 12 February, 2009 3 players have been played out of position all season for a number of reasons, but its been really bugging me . . . Lloyd James is a holding midfielder, not a RB. However, he's being played there as there is literally nobody else. Sign someone on loan please! Rudi Skacel has been used at LB, but is most effective at LM. With Holmes out injured, maybe he will get the chance to play in his favoured position? BWP is a striker. Just because his surname is the same as Shaun's, doesn't mean he can play on the wing just as well as him. Mini-rant over.
