Gap year in Australia,

My son is having a gap year in Australia, starting in Melbourne, working for a while and travelling around working for a bit ( you get the drift),

As he is starting in Melbourne any recommendations of the best place to find work to start with, he has trained as a Barista, so he will start in coffee houses, he is willing to turn his hand at anything,

Possibly not that, when I lived there the Daily Planet was the largest brothel in Melbourne, so if desperate I suppose!

There will be loads on casual work in Melbourne and surrounding suburbs, get up to Sydney I say or Port Douglas.

Loved Adelaide. Less tourists here and loads of interesting places outside the town (wineries, Kangaroo isl).

Whatever he does , give the Gold Coast a miss.

Gold Coast= Bets place for a lad and a ****.

Perth is ridiculously expensive. Gold rush economy and a cost of living to match.

Australia is now a completely overpriced, housing a joke for the quality, sure you get land and a pool but usually in a souless spot miles away from anywhere.

I'm hoping to do some working travel next year in Auss/NZ so any info would be appreciated.

Got some work lined up in Auckland hopefully. Is it decent enough as a city, anyone who's been?

Auckland to me is the Birmingham of Australasia, its ****e for a City of over a Million, its too spread out with little culture (they will go on about the Amertica Cup and Boats a lot), the weather is poor for down under, live just outside in a beach community would be better but the commute is also long as the roads as crap.

South Island for me.

Wellington is nice. I have a relative who is a Judge there. I'll hook you up.

Edit: oh yeah thats north island.

I went this summer but had to cut it short due to a family illness . I'll be going back one day.

Christchurch is nice and right near the Canterbury Plains, Dunedin is the best to be honest mate runs a club down there, good place, similar feel to here. I lived in Central Otago (Arrowtown) for 3 years, great place but depends what you want.

Luke is going to start in Melbourne then work his way around, hasnt thought of an itinary yet any suggestions, he is going up to darwin but apart from that he is just going to take it as it comes,

I lived and worked in Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington. Hated Auckland as the city centre or CBD as they call it, is very touristy and not very interesting. I lived in Christchurch twice and enjoyed it, but the last time was just before the first earth quake. Since then the CBD is nearly completely gone, the job and housing situation is pretty bad and they still get after shocks which can be unnerving. I loved living in Wellington, good bars, coffee shops and gigs. Plenty of places to get away from it all near by. Only downside was the weather as it can be very very windy.

For places on the South Island I'd recommend Nelson as it has good weather, is near some really nice places including the Abel Tasman National Park, and there are plenty of fruit picking jobs if you are willing to do hard work. Dunedin is also cool but it is a student town so work can be hard to come by. There is also Queenstown which is very scenic but very touristy and expensive.
