The Budget VAT Up - What do the LIB DEMS say to that
bridge too far replied to John B's topic in The Lounge
Not true - before the election, every party said there would have to be cuts. No party would be drawn on how the cuts would be managed and how deep they'd be. -

They probably won't have jobs sadly as, due to Georgie boy's misunderstanding of how economics work, we'll probably have a 'double dip' and lots of jobs in all sectors will go. He's even not listening to his own Office for Budgetary Responsibility. Instead of knocking public sector pensions, workers in the private sector should demand that they have parity. After all, their own bosses get huge pensions. And we should support the private sector workers because, after all, it's us buying their companies' products and services that produce their profits that fill up the pension pots of their bosses. We pay for the private sector bosses' pensions by boosting their profits as much as we pay for the public sector pensions through tax. -

C'mon - be fair to Stanley. His lot burn books IIRC. -
) This is probably hopeful and misguided but I thought all creditors had to get the same deal (footballing creditors aside)?

I think some people just don't understand how much work is given to private companies by the public sector. I'm talking about large construction contracts (I bet the likes of Bovis, McAlpine are shi**ing themselves at the prospect of schools and hospitals development programmes being curtailed) and small supply contracts. -

JB - once again you ignore the fact that a lot of low paid workers in the private sector are workers who once worked in the public sector but were TUPEd over when a lot of public sector work was privatised. It does skew the percentages. My daughter is an IT project manager working for a housing association. Her best friend does the same work for a facilities management company that has, as its main contract, FM work for a housing association. My daughter earns half of that of her friend. They do the same job. -

Which is what the Liberal-supporting Guardian is demonstrating in this article. The Guardian doesn't rely on sensationalist half-truths like others in the media. -

Taking people out of tax or 'giving' them another £200 a year will not make up for the increases in the amount they have to pay if VAT is increased and if some benefits are cut. My daughter won't be able to afford to go to work (and she has a senior job in the housing sector) if child tax credits and benefits are cut. -

Thanks for posting this, Andy. I've been trying to point these facts out on here for ages. But a lot of people make their minds up by reading screaming headlines about 'gold-plated' public sector pensions found in the Daily Hate etc. It's good to get a balanced view. -
