Interesting to see that Ed Miliband has way more nominations than the other declared candidates put together and has more than the required 33 nominations to be able to stand officially. Both Southampton MPs have nominated him.

Sometimes, JB, the private sector isn't better, is it. Not when the ONLY driver is profit. Take hospital cleaning as an example - standards deteriorated noticeably when the private sector took over and, in order to boost profits, got rid of a large number of very experienced previously public sector workers. Of course we need a private sector - or at least the revenues it provides in the form of all sorts of taxes, be they income based or purchase based. But a private sector can only work successfully if it has the infrastructure of the public sector in place to support it.

And ongoing 'on the job' training. Five days more than your average cafe / restaurant worker that Stu was comparing them to, of course.

From people who have been well educated and kept healthy by the public sector and kept safe from criminal acts and fires by the public sector etc. etc. Deuce?

But not forgetting that public sector workers buy private sector stuff, eh JB? What comes around goes around as they say.

I didn't say it was DANGEROUS. I said that their duties were far wider than 'serving tea and coffee' and that their training included how to deal with life-threatening situations. But you put what ever spin you like on it, Stu. Which job are you going to pick on next? You've had a pop at firefighters, students...... I bet you think yours is the only really hard job in the world

It seems that ALL airlines are losing money. This from Bloomberg: http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601085&sid=aKETztcaDYpY Examination of European airlines projected losses is about half way down. Oh I forgot - anything I quote is bound to be a left-wing rant

Yes you're right of course about other taxes. I didn't get as far as looking at purchase taxes (equivalent to our VAT). I don't think ANS stated that it's the tax rates that encourage people to emigrate. In fact I think he said it was the lifestyles that were appealing - and the weather! We've often said how we'd like to live in NZ and I have friends who have made that move. However, we love this country too much to move. Not so long ago I watched one of those programmes about people thinking about moving down under. When some of them did their sums they realised that, although property prices were comparitively cheaper and salaries about the same, their cost of living would be much higher due to taxes and food costs and that the weather / climate wouldn't make up for being worse off.

Hey! Why don't we all become attendants? It's such a good life! I have three friends who were flight attendants. Like many other people in many other walks of life, they either changed career or opted for ground duties because of the toll it took on their personal lives and families.
