But it's the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. And Hilary Benn's the SoS. A highly intelligent and principled man, like his father. The Minister of State for Food, Farming and the Environment is Jim Fitzpatrick who is a vegetarian but his ministerial brief goes way beyond just livestock farming, obviously. You could equally argue that the environmental / crop interests can't be fairly looked after by a carnivore. Just as stupid.

According to Cancer UK, more than 1 in 3 people in the UK will develop a cancer of some form. So Badger's right - the chances are high that this leaflet will land on the doorstep of a cancer sufferer or the friend or relative of someone with cancer. http://info.cancerresearchuk.org/prod_consump/groups/cr_common/@nre/@sta/documents/generalcontent/018070.pdf As the relative of a cancer sufferer who was diagnosed within weeks and treated, at a cost of £300K over 10 years, I'm only too well aware of the good service offered currently. It would be a shame if the huge improvements in the health service (as highlighted by the Kings Fund yesterday) were to be lost. But I do think the leaflet campaign could have been handled better.

Not as offensive as your suggesting that the minister can't 'run' his department fairly. Or do you also think the DoH should have a nurse running it, Education a teacher, War a former soldier? FFS departments of state are actually 'run' by senior civil servants who advise ministers. Moving on to farms and wages, I think it's disgraceful that supermarkets have such power over agribusinesses. I saw a programme recently where a lettuce grower was contracted to sell all his produce to one supermarket. The supermarket then told him to reduce his price. This meant he either had to do so, selling his lettuces for less than they cost to grow, or to find another buyer for his already growing lettuces. He actually walked away from the business altogether. I think we need Fair Trade in this country.

Andy Burnham - drop dead gorgeous with stunning eyes. And young, fit (as in not fat) and clever. He can't go wrong!

Thank you. This is the article that starts "The latest polls put Labour and Conservatives close enough for the Tories to be 15 seats short of a majority. More worryingly, people believe neither Labour nor Tory leaders are being honest", yes? And goes on to say: "Mr Brown, boosted by polls that continue to show he could deny the Tories victory on 6 May, will unveil a manifesto tomorrow ..." and to say: "However, the Chancellor, Alistair Darling, comes out top (23 per cent) on the question of who would make the best chancellor, followed by the Lib Dem and Tory Shadow Chancellors, Vince Cable and George Osborne (on 21 per cent and 19 per cent respectively)". And, to be pedantic, the bit you've picked out is no clearer - it says 'Tories to win, but by how much'. It does talk about a majority but it would be wise to put the parameters in to see what the majority is over (what). Tories over Labour? Tories over Labour + assortment of 'others'? FYI pollsters are also known as psephologists.

Can you link me to the article please? I read that as meaning the Conservative majority over Labour. Apologies if I'm wrong but I'd like to see for myself.
