Even if you ignored the cost of all those transfer / loan fees....what about their salaries? we are overloaded with many players (who don't play), and our salary costs so high, we were second only to Leicester - and they are about to be fined and forced to take a points deduction. Good luck their next manager - he'll need it.
-
... that used to be called "a banana shot", but in his case it maybe its " a boomeranger ". Ryan was another victim of our " overloaded squad ", with yet another manager who didn't appreciate his input to the squad. The average "30-something" manager is looking to bring in some talented kids but then neglects the value of having experienced players who are there to help such youngsters.

Sadly he is nowhere near the quality we needed to replace Prowsey, not least in goal tally. He has a "schoolboys temperament ", makes stupid, unnecessary tackles and then argues with referees (all players ahould surely understand that you can never win that argument). He was suspended after 5 yellows at end of November, and has been booked for 4th time since returning. Another suspension in the offing, and it may be more than just one game suspension next time. If it was me... I'd play Bragg more often than I would Downes.

Hi, thank you Turkish . It's still me. I'm back - but without my 11,000+ history of postings. I had technical problems with mails and registration, and couldn't re-register under my old name. Don't think I missed much. Will Still came and went, but I hold out more hope for Tonda. Squad is vastly overloaded, but we still haven't signed a real striker, hope Ross Stewart stays fit.

The only person who knew how to handle things in that game ....was the referee. He knew what sort of a match it was going to be, and ignored almost every foul, and had seemingly had left his red card in the ref's room. When he finally booked a couple of players late on in the game, it was merely a token gesture after having ignored many that were far worse earlier in the game. Given that there was no VAR to disallow their goal (for handball) we would have got all 3 points but the game might have ended with only 9 a side, as some of the tackles were quite brutal. Late on Jay Robinson went down under a 2 footed tackle from behind and it was ignored. Thank goodness that is all over for the season.

Yes but that meant he was already taller than a lot of those around him who did jump, but the problem in our case was that we had no-one capable of crossjng the ball into the area to him..
-
Height is no guarantee of success either. (mind you.. Messi is no giant is he?). Onuachu's goal tally was nothing to boast about, (and Carrillo never got off the mark), but then again we didn't play with any real wingers in the whole time they were with us. instead we became obsessed with the concept of "overlapping full backs". A BS idea.

LATEST Ryan Fraser's new side were bottom of the Aussie A league after last weekend. On his debut game (against fellow strugglers Perth Glory) he came on as sub after 60 minutes, and then scored the only goal of the game in the 92nd min. Nice one Ryan !

We might hope, but don't hold your breath .

...many players score at least once a season, so perhaps that was his this time around. A sad thing to relate is that Paul Onuachu (having scored 11 goals - so far) in Turkey, puts his success down to the fact that ..." they are playing in a formation that suits him". ( i.e. wingers.) Having sold him, we then signed TWO wingers, and have played half a season, still lacking a big CF. Hopefully Ross Stewart can maintain fitness, and our wingers will finally have someone to aim at.
-
Only go for the best, eh?. I recall an interview with the Koeman brothers shortly after they started with Saints. When asked the question.. If you could have any player in the world who would you choose? after a short pause.... they smiled at each other .....and simultaneously said ...Messi.

- even if he didn't get much game time in Germany, he was an understudy to Neuer (who must rate as one of the best keepers in the World), so he must have learned something simply by watching him.
-
we had defenders in front of him who forgot why they were there. A bit hard to blame a goalie for every goal conceded.
-
......that means we have to hope that Ross Stewart stays fit.

the answer to that one will be known by Feb 1st, but I read rumours that JWP might re-join Moyes at Everton (who are having their best season in a long time). Prowsey's first season under Moyes at WHam was his best but successive managers ditched him in favour of others, whilst WHam descended down into the drop zone. Everton already have Dibling and Alcarez - can they be the next club to build an ex-Saints squad?.. Liverpool did OK with that formula. At this stage of his career, JWP will want an iron-clad Prem. deal to see him through to an eventual retirement, (which in his case might be quite some time in the future).
-
More importantly .. can he speak German?
-
I agree Vectis, but he is still our player - and IMO a better choice than anyone else we've used this season. He DAJFU for us during a sticky period when KWP was out injured that season, and we are unlikely to get any sort of deal with his contract going out in the summer, when he would likely return to play for Nathan Jones (if NJ is till in charge by then ?). Regardless of how we finish this season, he won't be the only one to leave. With no " outstanding players " outside of the squad, we have an enormous salary bill that must be reduced.

Not sure we are talking about the same player(s) (experience-wise) Elias Jelert is 22 , played just 66 games for Copenhagen (admittedly Denmark's best club) but was hardly convincing as he was later sold onto Galatasary (Turkey) where he played 21 games in his first season. (he has made 3 apps. for Denmark, but the last being in 2024). SR then signed him on loan for us last summer. His first showing was (in game 6) Hull (a) ...12 min. sub. app. Two games later he started (v. Swansea) but was replaced in second half through injury. Was then out absent injured for 13 games, returning as a late sub. v. Birmingham (a) on Dec.29. Overall... not totally convincing...so far. James Bree is 28. Has made 280 apps. includes sizeable spells with Barnsley and Luton, and nearly all at Championship level. Played 20 times for Saints when we were (recently) in Premier League, during when he scored 2 goals in League Cup games, and was often a regular replacement when KWP was injured. It's no wonder Nathan Jones was quick to loan him, (think he's scored 2 goals for them this season)? Referring back to my original post ....... I rest my case. P.S. I might also make a similar case for Charlie Taylor (who has similar background to Bree) but was another caste-off (by Will Still).
-
Jelert may be "one for the future", but Bree has a record of playing at this level with various clubs. I don't think Bree ever played a bad game for us, but no-one is faultless all the time. We may get a chance to see, if he gets game time this week.

You're still young. You have a long way to go yet, just hang in there, I'm nearer 80 ...and I've been through a lot more than what we are suffering now.
-
Only bought himself a little time. He rejected us (as a relegated Prem. side) but will likely be playing Championship football next season if he stays with Wolves.

Saints Legends v Man Utd Legends - 28 March
swedish dave replied to Football Special's topic in The Saints
Why am I laughing... they were better than anyone we have now. Surely close enough for MLT to come and play for 45 mins. To think he was only paid £2500 /week in those days. That's criminal, when you consider the money squandered on mediocre types nowadays. -
Thank you H&W , (that's 3 of you who have commented), although there used to be "someone" on here who periodically criticised me, but the only thing I can recall was that he rarely used a Spell Checker. I don't go out of my way to be different, but I was the kid who read a lot of books when young, (and then teachers wanted me to read my scrawling aloud to the class), which frequently made me unpopular with those ...who didn't. The tone of some postings tends to brings out the cynic in me, but as I am in a generation too old to care, the one thing I have learned ...is to be pragmatic. Changing managers and even owners, and surviving bankruptcies is just par for the course for me after 66+ years as a fan, although to be fair there are times - when provoked - that quite frankly - I just don't give a da*n.
-
right Turkish, but for the really ambitious ones it's a no-brainer when a big Prem. side makes an offer. latest was... Harley Emsden-James ( yes I never heard of him either - until he'd left) and signed for Man. Utd. Saints may have got a nominal fee to cover costs for his earlier boys team training, but now we'll get S.F.A.
-
Oh....was that a compliment, or a criticism? I do write in a lot in differing styles, (and even had some poetry published - back in the day). Nowadays my hobby is writing film scripts that may never see the light of day, and responding to postings on football sites that are written in understandable English.
