Been out all day in London doing a lot of stuff so only just catching up. I am really pleased we’ve had/having a bloody good clear out, expunging the stagnation of the last few years - and we seem to be developing a very new team that we can really get behind, along with a manager who we can rally around, and we can enjoy this league.

That was never a second yellow, ref conned totally. Expect an appeal to be successful post hoc but if it affects the result no one will feel any consolation.

Too many flawed performances in the team today. edit to add: there are far less stoppages in the women’s game. It flows a lot longer between the ref blowing up, but by God when she does blow up, they stop it forever.

Got to be a penalty. This whole lark about “unnatural limb position” is ridiculous. If there was a contortionist on the pitch, I could understand it, otherwise it’s got to be a penalty

The overall quality of the game has dipped this half. All a bit flat.

England look a whole class below Spain on the basis of the first half. need some serious reorganisation at half-time. If the first 10 minutes look equally ropey, it would be time for substitutions.

Spain playing some lovely stuff. I presume that chesting the ball down to control it is anatomically potentially painful which is another factor inhibiting aerial play?

That should’ve been a booking

First game I’ve watched of the tournament, some initial notes: 1. Good shape, both teams. Both teams are holding their formation well too… 2. The crowd makes a different noise, there is no singing yet, and rather than the rising roar of the men’s crowd when play accelerates towards the goal, there is a rising shrill scream, reminiscent of the women’s swimming gala, or netball match. 3. there is some excellent skill on display and at least one or two crunching tackles. 4. The teams do look small and verging on slightly lost on the wide expanse of pitch. I can see why in some quarters there are calls to reduce the pitch size by 15% and make the ball commensurately smaller and lighter along with the goals, but that would probably be impractical.

Definitely growing on me.
