This biggest problem is the 12 million spent on two players who are not starters and don't solve a problem of a player like Lallana being out for half a dozen games or whatever it will be.

I agree with all that. We still had another half of a team which was league 1/NPC standard and we still have too many of them knocking about now. As I've said above though, it's more than fair enough to suggest that 30M worth of spending could have gotten us a bit more strength and depth than we have now.

I'm not peddling a sob story. I think our starting 11 is good enough, half we already had from league 1, the other half added over the last season/this season. Our depth isnt good enough however, and I wouldn't begrudge anyone arguing the point that we could have got more from 30M than we actully have

But is that not a true statement? Half our side were in league 1. They are quality players though so the posters back then saying they were at least NPC standard were actually right. Lambert, Lallana, Morgan, Fonte are not the issue now though. It's the fact that our squad depth is poor which is a by product of moving from L1 to prem in two years IMO

Not a miracle but still very impressive. We lost and drew regularly under Pardew and Wilkins couldn't get the same players to win games. There was no gaurentee that we would or should have gone up after an absolutely shambolic start to that season.
