  1. Broadly sympathetic to some of these ideas, though too much emphasis is placed on the income rather than the wealth side of the equation. Having a flow of income -often tantamount to living hand to mouth- doesn't encourage the same behavioural change -a sense of responsibility and long-termism- that owning assets can, a point made by radicals like Thomas Paine and more recently Bruce Ackerman, Michael Sherraden and Julian Le Grand. Labour dabbled in this area -universal Child Trust Funds, later abolished by the Tories, being the flagship policy- but ultimately it felt like a fashion statement, a concession to a few wonks rather than a truly articulated initiative. Much more could be done.
  2. £8.75-10m Wouldn't say its a total bargain but works out well for both sides given Chelsea paid £7m for Azpilicueta and £15.8m for Filipe Luis.
  3. Or its a function of the system and his advanced role. If anything, he should be supporting Pelle more.
  4. Carlton Cole not a bad bit of biz for WBA.
  5. Precisely why it'll be harder to tie up a permanent deal for him.
  6. Sounds even less physical than Gaston, tbh. Gaston was used to getting hacked down every week in a very cynical league; whereas Koeman basically said that the Portuguese league was too 'physical' for Djuricic -and a big reason why he struggled.
  7. Thought the brains trust on here told us it made strategic or financial sense to sign our loans on permanents in the jan window.
  8. I mention Palace only because they too have plenty of pace and power - by the same token, QPR's defense isn't good enough to soak up pressure and play on the counter like Swansea did. Thought Zamora, of all players, gave us fits at SMS. Getting Toby back is a must because he's a mismatch Yoshida and Gardos is not mobile enough to deal with the likes of Vargas and Austin. We should win; but they've made life very difficult for teams on their patch -think the City game- where they've only lost three times all season.
  9. It's also slightly odd that we have three wingers who prefer to play on the left.
  10. Another case of burnt sausages, Jamie? You've been in an excitable mood this morning. Of course, teams overpay in January - why we've consistently stayed out of the window. Supply (limited players available) doesn't match demand (teams that expectedly or unexpectedly find themselves in relegation scraps or chasing honours). At the margins, that will inflate fees.
  11. Good lad, have a treat.
  12. Who cares? Why are you even posting on this thread, then? Odd.
  13. Horrible playcall at the end. Historically bad. The overelaboration smacked of pure ego. What a way to gift a Super Bowl to an unpleasant franchise.
  14. What stuck out is how disjointedly we started the second half. Reed's sub certainly afforded them more space -as you would expect- but Swansea were already coming into the game well before it. So if there was a change, it wasn't a 180 degrees one. The fact remains that Swansea had three touches in our box all game, so i can understand why Koeman gambled. My bigger gripe is that Mane's introduction crowded out Elia as both seemed to occupy similar positions all too often.
  15. You forget that Shelvey did exactly the same thing (he hit the post) while Reed was still on the pitch.
  16. Strangely hasn't been that threatening from crosses all season - think he's scored one header. That's it. For Feyenoord, he was famous for attacking the near post -whether on the ground or in the air- but not really done that for us.
  17. What? like the backheel for Bertrand against QPR? Or his turn and cross for Bertrand against Palace? Or the way he laid the goal on a plate for JWP against Arsenal or Pelle against Hull etc etc?
  18. Utter nonsense - they're very competitive at home and already showed at SMS they can mix it up. They're very physical and direct and will try to follow Palace's recent gameplan which we struggled with. Much will depend on who returns for us and whether they hit the ground running.
  19. Not a knock but his assist against Newcastle (like Palace) was on the counter and there was plenty of space in behind the defense. It still needed decent execution but was very different from today where he had to unlock a compact defense - and its that kind of impact that will define whether he can make the step up.
  20. Thought it was cringeworthily funny. A cross between being reacquainted with an old friend and a collective outbreak of Tourettes.
  21. It's the lack of consistency that grates. To take one example: Wes Brown's challenge on Gaston was deemed perfectly legal because he supposedly won the ball (debatable), even though it was probably more reckless than Bertrand's.
  22. Of course, Forster should have done better with the goal - Le Tiss and Carragher said the same thing. But it's all hipster on here to defend him just because a few morons went overboard with their criticisms earlier in the season.
  23. This season is a write off. No point pinning hopes on him making much, if any, of a contribution.
  24. No it's because they dropped deep and put plenty of bodies behind the ball - indeed, was quite impressed how we still managed to get behind them, notwithstanding the final ball. Swansea played on the counter and invariably had more space to shoot.
