Was invited out for a meal with my cousin, her friend and her boyfriend who happened to be Paul Verhoeven the film director. He was very pleasant and answered my obvious questions about Sharon Stone and how he got he to flash her bits. At one point though it got a bit odd. He said that he didn't like publicity and that his brother sat in for pictures and interviews. Said to my cousin that didn't sound right and had my doubts about him. A few months later we read in the local paper that this bloke had been arrested for impersonating Paul Verhoeven! Bizarre.

Okay take the p*ss all you like, but after all the chat of qualifying for the CL and Cortese's dream of CLs football it is not just a question of not yet - it is probably not ever. Forget Barcelona, there are many many clubs playing CL football that we couldn't compete with.

Watching the final last night it occurred to me just how far we are away from the quality needed to be anywhere near winning this trophy. Qualifying is one thing and we may well do that soonish, but we are worlds away from being able to compete with the likes of Barcelona. Even Juventus looked well beyond us. We will never have the cash to bring in the quality of squad needed to compete at the highest level. Perhaps I am just having an Alpine moment, but maybe Europa is the best we can hope for?

As always, wages will have a say in where he goes.

Met Paul Gambercini at Gard du Nord several years ago. I was with my ex wife and step daughter and he came up and asked about the time of the train. Had a pleasant chat while waiting for the Eurostar to turn up.

Many years ago our kids football team had a trip to see Crystal Palace v Rotherham. Johnny "Budgie" Byrne was playing for Palace at the time and took us around the dressing room introducing us to all the players. Called Budgie because he liked to chat apparently! Top bloke. I bumped into Tommy Doherty in the corridor (manager of Rotherham at the time) and asked for his autograph but he told me to go away. Git.
