Redondo Saint Posted 1 August, 2009 Share Posted 1 August, 2009 In an attempt to lighten the mood; What is your most memorable song from the first season you supported SFC? I'll go first... Telegram Sam (T. Tex) 1972. I just remember a lot of long haired teenagers smoking with a pint of something (mild, Manns, etc) and swearing! It didn't take me long to get in the groove! chrisobee Posted 1 August, 2009 Share Posted 1 August, 2009 Good grief. I'm not sure my memory is that good ! Maybe Yellow Submarine or Eleanor Rigby. Vaguely seem to recall there was a football chant based on Yellow Submarine ?

alehouseboys Posted 1 August, 2009 Share Posted 1 August, 2009 'Hey Girl Don't Bother Me', The Tams - just sticks in the mind. Saturday mornings at the Top Rank, afternoons at the football. Levis, Ben Shermans, Loathers, Doc Martins, Braces, Harringtons, Crombies...not all at the same time tho! 'appy days.
Dibden Purlieu Saint Posted 1 August, 2009 Share Posted 1 August, 2009 I think for me it was These Sounds (Drop da Bomb) - Kenny Dope presents the Bucketheads. That song always reminds me of being at The Dell when I was young.
red&white56 Posted 1 August, 2009 Share Posted 1 August, 2009 I remember standing on the Archers Rd terrace, I was early so there weren't many folks around. The tannoy system was palying Maxine Nightingale - Right Back Where We Started From. It must have been in the 70s - this wasn;t my first game but just a vivid memory of music and football. eurosaint Posted 1 August, 2009 Share Posted 1 August, 2009 My first match at the Dell was in 1971 when Cher had a hit with 'Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves' ! I thought to myself it was best to avoid Portsmouth at all costs !!
Chorlton Posted 1 August, 2009 Share Posted 1 August, 2009 Not my earliest memory, but that Stevie Wonder's "I Just Called to Say I Love You" seemed to be played at least twice every home match in 84/85, and I always associate it with sitting in the Upper West Stand where I had use of a season ticket. red&white56 Posted 1 August, 2009 Share Posted 1 August, 2009 The wurzels - I've got a brand combine harvester - the year we won the FA cup. What a sh*t song to have hanging around in my memory of that great day !
ericofarabia Posted 1 August, 2009 Share Posted 1 August, 2009 My earliest musical memories from when I started going to matches in the late 60s early 70's was that they always seem to play The UK Eurovision song entry So if I ever hear Puppet on a String (Sandie Shaw) Congratulations (Cliff) or Knock knock, whos there (Mary Hopkins) it takes me back to my early days at The Dell. Then one night match they played Dave Clark Five's Bits and Pieces (probably as a preview as to how the opposition C/C would end up after 90 mins of John McGrath's attention ) and it sounded incredible, so edgy and violent compared to the other stuff they played. My earliest chant that stands out was 10 seconds after the opposition scored "You're gonna get your f**kin heads kicked in " As a young impressionable lad, to hear thousands of angry grown ups swearing was awesome. Back in those days you didn't hear swearing on TV or at home, so it was brilliant Watching match of the day was great, because you knew it would come booming thru your TV as soon as the away team scored, but I think after a while the beeb cottoned on and muted it a bit
macthesaint Posted 1 August, 2009 Share Posted 1 August, 2009 Wasn't my first season, but I still remember Oliver's Army (Elvis Costello for the young uns) on the happy trips back from Luton,Fulham and Orient 77-78 promotion finale.
whizzpop Posted 1 August, 2009 Share Posted 1 August, 2009 Obviously one of the younger ones on here today - Mine is just after Italia 90. World in Motion, Vanilla Ice (Ice Ice Baby) and Mc Hammer (U Can't Touch this) were popular hits back in the day.
RedAndWhite91 Posted 1 August, 2009 Share Posted 1 August, 2009 I reckon I started supporting Saints in about 1995/6 when I was 4-ish, as I had that yellow Sanderson away shirt which was from 1995-1997. Can't remember exactly when I first became a supporter though, and can't remember music from when I first started following Southampton, mind you, was probably listening to Motorhead or something under my Dad's guidance.
